Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptist World Alliance: Second Congress Philadelphia, June 19-25, 1911 The second congress of the Baptist World Alliance held in Philadelphia, June 19-25, 1911, was a worthy successor of that held in London six years before. Indeed it marked that advance which the projectors of the enterprise hoped for, but perhaps hardly dared expect. In intellectual grasp, in clearness of vision, in felicity and strength of statement, in apprehension of the times to which it had come, and in the manifest consciousness of mastery, of power, it was at least the equal of its predecessor. In enthusiasm, in attendance, in the universality of its representation, and in the projection of its thought and plan into the future it was its superior. None of those present on Monday afternoon, or at the roll-call of nations, or when Doctor Clifford gave his masterly address, or who followed with the different speakers the series through with scarce diminishing attendance even to the end will be likely to question this statement. It was a gathering of Baptists such as had never taken place before, such as perhaps will be long in taking place again. Indeed it was a religious gathering that has been rarely equalled in days past, and if one were inclined to assume the role of the prophet he might say would be rarely equalled in the days to come. But those who could attend in person and gather inspiration by direct impact were but a small part of those who must stand at a distance and wait for tidings of the meetings. And these are no less interested than were they. To them this volume will come as a welcome visitor. It contains all the addresses and sermons the Committee has been able to secure. Some were not written and these were obtained by stenographic report. All the discussions, likewise, have been embodied. The portraits of most of the speakers and officers are given as in the preceding volume and where there is failure it is because the photograph could not be secured. This is a pleasing feature of these publications. We get not only what was done, but we see also who did it. On behalf of the General Committee we extend thanks to all who have contributed to make the volume what it is. We do not specialize but leave to each the selection of his or her portion. Nay, we venture to extend the area of appreciation to include all who aided to make the occasion what it was. Never had principals more willing helpers, never had occasion principals more willing to serve. Nor can we refrain from words of praise for those who came to us. Come from where they might, from Bohemia or Sweden, Russia or Norway, France or Germany, England. Canada, or the United States, they were Christian men and women. There were crowds but no disorder. There were police in evidence but no arrests. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1905, the Baptist World Alliance has served as a prophetic witness for Jesus Christ on behalf of the global Baptist family. At its World Congress, General Council, and Executive Committee meetings, over four hundred resolutions and statements have been adopted, expressing God's love, compassion, and justice. The BWA has the support of 241 member bodies located in 126 countries and territories, representing 47 million people. Good News for the World is an encyclopedic reference work presenting the BWA's resolutions in one volume for the first time. The range of critical issues covered by this collection is comprehensive, and many of the resolutions speak to contemporary concerns with multicultural wisdom, spiritual integrity, and intellectual depth. Readers seeking to discover how Baptists on a global scale and across time have addressed the human condition in its various dimensions (moral, social, economic, political, and religious), will be inspired by these declarations. This volume is an indispensable resource for the global Baptist movement and its scholars, historians, leaders, and clergy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a collection of twenty-one essays discussing how Baptists throughout the world have related to other Christians and to other institutions and movements over the centuries. The theme of this collection of twenty-one essays, 'Baptists and Others', includes relations with other Christians and with other institutions and movements. What, the authors ask, has been the Baptist experience of engaging with different groups and developments? The theme has been explored by means of case studies, some of which are very specific in time and place while others cover long periods and more than one country. In the first half the contents are arranged by period. The first section examines early Baptists, the second nineteenth-century Baptists in Britain and America and the third Baptists in the twentieth century. The second half turns to various parts of the world. There is a section on Australia, another on New Zealand and a third on Asia and Africa. The overall picture is one of a complicated series of relationships as Baptists defined themselves as different from other bodies and yet, especially in the twentieth century, tried to co-operate in mission and ecumenical endeavour. 'Baptists are often regarded as enthusiastic separatists and unenthusiastic ecumenists. These essays, based on hard evidence rather than passing impressions, are a necessary correction to superficial prejudices and show the reality to be much more complex and nuanced, as well as varied over time and place. The book is a smorgasbord of delights. Yet, readers should avoid the temptation to pick and choose from the menu, ensuring rather that each offering is digested so they enjoy a balance and nutritious meal.' Derek Tidball

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How indigenous was the Evangelical Free Church movement in Tsarist Russia? Was it simply a foreign import? To what extent did it threaten the political stability of the nation and encroach upon the existing Russian and German churches? On the Edge examines the efforts of the regimes to suppress the movement and how the movement not only survived but also expanded. To what extent did the movement bring upon itself unnecessary opposition because of aggressiveness and tactics? Albert Wardin describes the contributions the movement made to the religious life of Russia and examines its numerical success.

Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Ecumenical Studies is an unparalleled compendium of ecumenical history, information and reflection. With essay contributions by nearly fifty experts in their various fields, and edited by two leading international scholars, the Handbook is a major resource for all who are involved or interested in ecumenical work for reconciliation between Christians and for the unity of the Church. Its six main sections consider, respectively, the different phases of the history of the ecumenical movement from the mid-nineteenth century to the present; the ways in which leading Christian churches and traditions, Orthodox, Anglican, Methodist, Catholic, Lutheran, Reformed, Baptist, and Pentecostal, have engaged with and contributed to the movement; the achievements of ecumenical dialogue in key areas of Christian doctrine, such as Christology and ecclesiology, baptism, Eucharist and ministry, morals and mission, and the issues that remain outstanding; various ecumenical agencies and instruments, such as covenants and dialogues, the World Council of Churches, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Global Christian Forum; the progress and difficulties of ecumenism in different countries, areas and continents of the world, the UK and the USA, Africa, Asia, South America, Europe, and the Middle East, ; and finally two all-important questions are considered by scholars from various traditions: what would Christian unity look like and what is the best method for seeking it? This is a remarkably comprehensive account and assessment of one of the most outstanding features of Christian history, namely the modern ecumenical movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly annihilated in the Stalinist persecutions of the 1930s, Soviet evangelicals emerged after the war in successive revival waves. The extremities of survival brought four evangelical denominations into a single state-approved union. This book describes the subsequent unity struggles, devoting major attention to the Reform Baptist split in 1961 when Soviet authorities again tried to destroy the movement. The book describes regional differences, techniques for evangelism, and the lifestyle of local and regional leaders, both the legally registered ones and those hiding from the authorities. It also includes a frank description and analysis of the major missions to Eastern Europe as well as the foreign relations of Soviet evangelicals. Every chapter raises issues for reflection, often paradoxical, about how the church should live in an unfriendly environment. Illustrative material throughout personalizes a story that is overburdened with tragedy, pathos, and conflict. The book is intended to fill a serious gap in the literature by providing a reliable, sensitive treatment of a subject suffering from exaggerations on the one hand and the inadequate candor of Soviet spokesmen on the other. It is based on a broad range of sources, some of which were uniquely available to the author. The more we understand each other, the easier it is to love each other and to combat the suspicions that lead to war.
