Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The essay is about the English and the German banking system, their characteristics and the implications of these. As the English banking system is defined as a specialised banking system and the German one is known as a universal banking system, these terms are explained in the first chapter. Furthermore, the chapter deals with the history of both systems to make clear why these two banking systems developed into two different directions. After having looked at the differences of the two alternative banking systems, their structure is analysed in more detail in the second chapter. All different kinds of banks existing in England and Germany are identified and their scope of functions and goals are described. In the following some important features of the banking systems, such as short-termism and corporate governance, are analysed in great detail. This means that these features are defined and their causes and consequences are identified and evaluated. After the different banking systems have been described with regard to their structure and features, the objective of the next chapter is, to point out the implications of these systems on companies performance. Therefore it is first of all necessary to define performance and the factors being responsible for a high or low economic performance. Afterwards, the influence of the banking systems on these factors are analysed. The last chapter of this essay shortly describes other existing opinions concerning the structure of the banking systems and their implications on companies performance. Furthermore, the chapter points out some tendencies for the future development of these banking systems. Book excerpt: Banking in Scotland has a long and distinguished history - to this day Scotland is served by its own banks which form a distinct regional group within the wider British banking system. Yet, until this volume, there had been no book which gives a full account of modern Scottish banking, analyzing its position within the British banking structure. With this comprehensive study, this gap in the literature of modern British financial institutions has now been filled. Here, all aspects of Scottish banking are covered. The author describes the structure of the system and the pattern of branch banking, examining the position and practices of Scottish banks in regard to deposits and asset holding. He sets out the modern position of Scottish bank note issues and analyzes their significance both for the banks themselves and for the British system as a whole. The book gives valuable appraisal of the performance of the Scottish banks as lenders to the private business sector. The author is not concerned with Scottish banks simply as institutions domestic to Scotland. He traces their relationship with the City of London and fully analyzes their role within the operations of wider British Monetary policy. This fascinating study, first published in 1965, concludes with a consideration of the future prospects of the Scottish banks within British banking as a whole.

Book excerpt: This substantially expanded new edition of the Guide to the Historical Records of British Banking contains details of over 700 archive collections held in local record offices, university and local libraries and of course, banks. Wider coverage is given to the records of major domestic banks, British-owned overseas banks, merchant banks and discount houses. There are also additional listings of records of long defunct banks. Arranged alphabetically by name, the entries for each bank contain in most cases: · A brief history of the bank to explain numerous name changes. · Information as to where the bank's records are held. · Details of what the records consist of. The entries are set in context by introductory chapters covering the historical structure and function of British banking and the purpose, format and research value of the chief series of historical records commonly found in bank archives. Bank records concern not just banks but the varied activities that they financed. In addition to its contribution to the study of banking history, this monumental reference work facilitates a wider knowledge and understanding of the history of British finance.
