Book excerpt: A mysterious, broken-nosed cabby, a beautiful actress, and a villainous art heist have one thing in common—but the only one man who knows what it is has methods that are a little, shall we say . . . irregular Late Victorian London: home to gas streetlights, bands of ragged urchins, and now, young Andrew Craigie, who recently arrived from a tiny Cornwall village with his stern guardian, Mr. Dennison. At first the city feels dark and unwelcoming, but just around the corner is bustling Baker Street, where Andrew meets his first friend, Sara. Before long, London becomes downright interesting. But things get a little too exciting one night when Mr. Dennison doesn’t come home, and suddenly Andrew is on his own. Whom can he turn to in a strange city? Frantic, he goes to the tall, pipe-smoking, hat-wearing man at 221B, a man who Sara says is a famous detective—a man named Mr. Holmes.

Book excerpt: The terrifyingly surreal universe of horror master H. P. Lovecraft bleeds into the logical world of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s champion of rational deduction, in these stories by twenty top horror, mystery, fantasy, and science fiction writers. Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is among the most famous literary figures of all time. For more than a hundred years, his adventures have stood as imperishable monuments to the ability of human reason to penetrate every mystery, solve every puzzle, and punish every crime. For nearly as long, the macabre tales of H. P. Lovecraft have haunted readers with their nightmarish glimpses into realms of cosmic chaos and undying evil. But what would happen if Conan Doyle’s peerless detective and his allies were to find themselves faced with mysteries whose solutions lay not only beyond the grasp of logic, but of sanity itself? In this collection of all-new, all-original tales, twenty of today’s most cutting-edge writers provide their answers to that burning question. “A Study in Emerald” by Neil Gaiman: A gruesome murder exposes a plot against the Crown, a seditious conspiracy so cunningly wrought that only one man in all London could have planned it—and only one man can hope to stop it. “A Case of Royal Blood” by Steven-Elliot Altman: Sherlock Holmes and H. G. Wells join forces to protect a princess stalked by a ghost—or perhaps something far worse than a ghost. “Art in the Blood” by Brian Stableford: One man’s horrific affliction leads Sherlock Holmes to an ancient curse that threatens to awaken the crawling chaos slumbering in the blood of all humankind. “The Curious Case of Miss Violet Stone” by Poppy Z. Brite and David Ferguson: A girl who has not eaten in more than three years teaches Holmes and Watson that sometimes the impossible cannot be eliminated. “The Horror of the Many Faces” by Tim Lebbon: Dr. Watson witnesses a maniacal murder in London—and recognizes the villain as none other than his friend, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. With thirteen other dark tales of madness, horror, and deduction, a new and terrible game is afoot: “Tiger! Tiger!” by Elizabeth Bear “The Case of the Wavy Black Dagger” by Steve Perry “The Weeping Masks” by James Lowder “The Adventure of the Antiquarian’s Niece” by Barbara Hambly “The Mystery of the Worm” by John Pelan “The Mystery of the Hanged Man’s Puzzle” by Paul Finch “The Adventure of the Arab’s Manuscript” by Michael Reaves “The Drowned Geologist” by Caitlín R. Kiernan “A Case of Insomnia” by John P. Vourlis “The Adventure of the Voorish Sign” by Richard A. Lupoff “The Adventure of Exham Priory” by F. Gwynplaine MacIntyre “Death Did Not Become Him” by David Niall Wilson and Patricia Lee Macomber “Nightmare in Wax” by Simon Clark

Book excerpt: In his Sherlock Holmes adventures, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle has probably done more than any other writer, to form our image of London. In our mind's eye, we still see the sinister, fog-bound city that was the center of the Empire. Although not entirely true, readers have come to think of the Sherlock Holmes' adventures as London stories. Today, time, the Blitz, and urban redevelopment have taken their toll, but much of what Sherlock "saw" is still there. Conan Doyle was unusually precise in his London addresses and locations, only occasionally disguising a site. To help find Sherlock's London, Thomas B. Wheeler, a London expert and owner of London Secrets, has identified an "astonishing" 200 sites, and cross-referenced them by adventure, and by the closest modern underground station. "Finding Sherlock's London" is a London guidebook for Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts. To get the most out of it, reread your favorite Sherlock Holmes adventures before leaving home, and buy a pocket magnifying glass. After you arrive in London, purchase a modern street guide (for which you will need the magnifying glass), and a TravelCard for unlimited travel on London's Underground. Then, enjoy--the game is afoot!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to explore the ways in which the London Underground/ Tube was "mapped" by a number of writers from George Gissing to Virginia Woolf. From late Victorian London to the end of the World War II, "underground writing" created an imaginative world beneath the streets ofLondon. The real subterranean railway was therefore re-enacted in number of ways in writing, including as Dantean Underworld or hell, as gateway to a utopian future, as psychological looking- glass or as place of safety and security. The book is a chronological study from the opening of the first underground in the 1860s to its role in WW2. Each chapter explores perspectives on the underground in a number of writers, starting with George Gissing in the 1880s, moving through the work of H. G. Wells and into the writing of the1920s and 1930s including Virginia Woolf and George Orwell. It concludes with its portrayal in the fiction, poetry and art (including Henry Moore) of WW2. The approach takes a broadly cultural studies perspective, crossing the boundaries of transport history, literature and London/urban studies. It draws mainly on fiction but also uses poetry, art, journals, postcards and posters to illustrate. It links the actual underground trains, tracks andstations to the metaphorical world of "underground writing" and places the writing in a social/political context.
