Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aztec-Hunters A world of wonder, undreamed of thirty years ago, ha s burst upon America in the discovery of a marvelous Age of Glory on this continent, a thousand years before the landing of Columbus. No tale of the Arabian Nights is more extraordinary, no story of exploration is more filled with excitement and romance than this discovery of the great Maya Civilization of America. In America have been found pyramids greater than the pyramids of Egypt, in America lie ruined highways comparable to the great roads of Rome, in America still stand carved temples as great as those of Ancient Greece. These have been plucked by American explorers from the maw of the tropical jungle of Honduras, Guatemala and Yucatan. Savage tribes, which have defied the white man for four centuries, still harass the expeditions sent from the United States, the jaguar and poison-snake dispute intrusion, and the blue fog of fever hangs over all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Scout: A Story of the Aztec City The volume from which this reference comes appeared in 1864, when he may be said to have regained a Parisian consciousness of the value of wild adventure, and when he had become artistically and dramatically retrospective. A year or two before, his chief English translator, who seems to have had some private knowledge of his career (very probably supplied by himself) had written in brief an appreciation, which is just what he himself would have desired it to be. If the terms are rather large, and the prairie is not definitely located, it is in essence, we believe, a fair statement of the case. He was the adopted son, according to this freely coloured miniature, Of one of the most powerful Indian tribes. With this tribe he lived for more than fifteen years in the heart of the prairie, sharing their dangers and their combats, and accompanying them everywhere, rifle in one hand and tomahawk in the other. In turn squatter hunter, trapper, warrior, and miner, he traversed America from the highest peaks of the Cordilleras to the ocean shores, living from hand to mouth, happy for the day, careless of the morrow. Hence it is that in these stories he only describes his own life. The Indians of whom he speaks, he has known; the manners he depicts were his own. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scalp-Hunters: Or, Romantic Adventures in Northern Mexico About a year ago, I submitted to the public a book under the title of "The Rifle Rangers." It was prefaced as "truth poetically coloured;" truth for the groundwork, the flowering fancy; fact, enamelled by fiction: a mosaic of romance and reality. Some have said that the "poetic colouring" was a thought too vivid. Perhaps it was so; but the general judgment upon that little effort not only satisfied but gratified me; and to you who have pronounced in its favour, I now offer "another of the same." I shall be quite content if your sentence upon this be marked by no greater severity. I regret that my book exhibits no higher purpose than to amuse; but I have endeavoured to enamel its pages with a thousand facts, the result of my own experience. I have endeavoured to paint scenes of a strange land as they are painted on my memory. If you cannot believe them true, may I hope that you will acknowledge their vraisemhlance? But why should I contend for their truthfulness, after declaring myself guilty of no higher aim than to amuse you? I will not, then. Let it all pass for a fiction - a novel, if you will; but, in return for this concession on my part, permit me to ask you, do you not think it a "novel kind" of a novel? If you answer this question in the affirmative, then have I won my purpose. Before going further, I have two words to say: one of warning to you, and one of apology for myself. My scenes are of a sanguinary nature; some of them extremely so; but, alas! far less red than the realities from which they were drawn. The rain had par tially blinded the trail made by El Sol and his party; but the men who now followed it were not much used to guide posts and Rube, acting as leader, lifted it, at a trot. At intervals the flashes of lightning showed the mule tracks in the mud, and the white peak that beaconed us in the distance. Above all these scenes of peaceful merriment rose the gloomy pyramids of many temples, ever-present reminders of the cruel and bloody religion with which the whole fair land was cursed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Aztec God, and Other Dramas The scene of this drama is laid in Mexico near the opening of the Fifteenth Century, just when the Aztecs were beginning to overrun the country, and when, therefore, the peculiar forms of their religion may reasonably be supposed to have been comparatively unknown to the Tezcucans who, as will be shown presently, adhered, in the main, to the more mild religious observances of the ancient Toltecs. The facts with reference to the Aztec human sacrifices, the selection for these of a captive without blemish, the allotment to him of certain maidens as wives, and the general luxury and adoration with which he was surrounded up to the time when, surrendering the flowers that crowned his head and the lyre that he carried, he ascended the pyramid to have his heart torn out of him while still alive, - all these facts are sufficiently well known to substantiate the delineations of the drama. The exact religious conception which underlay these Aztec rites is not known. In the circumstances, it has been thought justifiable to surround them with a certain atmosphere of spiritual truth - though only in twilight - similar to that which is known to have formed the setting of the pagan worship of ancient Egypt and Greece. The American who travels has been a hunter after the antique as well as warm weather in winter, and when he could combine the two his journey was altogether a pleasure trip; he found them both in a mild way on the peninsula of Florida, but the old Castle of San Marco, at St. Augustine, was the most ancient ruin - in fact, was almost the only one the weather was warm enough, excepting an occasional norther, and the territory of pleasure travel attractive though some what limited. Gradually travel was extended to Cuba, and at last when the great railways to Mexico were completed a veritable Egypt of antiquities was found, and an Italy of sunny skies without crossing the seas; tourists were content and their number increased greatly.
