Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "To Death, I give you away!" These words, uttered by Nachiketa's father in a fit of anger, initiate the adventurous journey of twelve-year-old Nachiketa to the celestial realm of Lord Yama, the god of Death. Using this storyline of the Katha Upanishad, and a creatively imagined dialogue between the student Nachiketa and his guru Yama, the author presents the essence of the Upanishadic wisdom in a lucid, easy-to-understand manner. The dialogue helps Nachiketa (and us) discover answers to his profound questions: What is the real aim of our life? What happens after death? What is Self-realisation? How does one get liberated? 'Very inspiring. I find it very useful. The immediate impact of the book on me is that I have become calmer, while continuing to be active, professionally and otherwise. I intend to read this book again and again.' - V S Raju, former Director, IIT Delhi 'Having attended the courses of Prof. Devdas Menon on Self-Awareness and Integral Karmayoga at IIT Madras, I clearly hear his voice, blended with his deep understanding, flowing through this book, thankfully free of difficult Sanskrit terms. I feel grateful to be introduced to the process of awakening!' - Christian Thaulow, Professor (retd), NTNU, Norway 'It is not easy to translate the wisdom teachings of the Upanishads in simple language. The author attempts to do this and comes out with flying colours. The dialogue adopted is fascinating and keeps the reader hooked till the last page.' - Subir Chakraborty, MD & CEO, Exide Industries Ltd

Book excerpt: "You seem to have a swollen head, Shvetu!"This book begins with these words addressed by the renowned sage Uddalaka to his son, the 24 year-old Shvetaketu, who has just returned home after twelve years of education at a gurukula. Uddalaka points out to his son (and to us) that conventional education is limited by its utilitarian approach. Although useful and necessary to achieve material progress, it keeps us bound to delusion and suffering, and does not give us the ultimate understanding and limitless freedom, called 'moksha', that we all ultimately seek. "Do you have that understanding by which the unheard becomes heard, and the unknown becomes known?" is a key question Uddalaka poses to his son. Observing the sincerity and eagerness of Shvetaketu to realise this ultimate understanding, Rishi Uddalaka accepts him as a disciple, and engages with him in a series of enlightening dialogues. These are covered in a terse manner in the sixth chapter of the Chandogya Upanishad, which is said to be more than three thousand years old. The author of this book has imaginatively brought alive these dialogues in elegant English prose to enable present-day readers to comprehend the profound wisdom of the Upanishad. The wisdom is encapsulated in the famous 'mahavakya' of Rishi Uddalaka: 'Tattvamasi', literally meaning 'You are That!' This book is all about That, the all-pervading and timeless ultimate reality underlying all manifestation. There is only That, and we are That! For those who have read the author's earlier offering titled 'The Awakening of Nachiketa' (inspired by the Katha Upanishad), this book is bound to provide fresh insights regarding the way to Self-realisation. The reader is also likely to find it easier to relate to Shvetaketu than the prodigy Nachiketa.

The book is the third in a trilogy, following 'The Awakening of Nachiketa' (inspired by the Katha Upanishad) and 'The Awakening of Shvetaketu' (inspired by the Chandogya Upanishad) - by the same author, who provides lucid explanations to help the reader understand the core of the Upanishadic wisdom, effortlessly and enjoyably. The cover page illustrates the imagery of two birds located on the tree of life that this Upanishad is famous for. The book points to the ultimate purpose of human existence - a full awakening to the Ultimate Reality, which is possible even while living in the mortal body. It is that unchanging Truth that alone triumphs amidst the ever-changing world of appearances. Satyameva jayate!

Nachiketa resolutely sticks to his stance and politely refuses to change his demand. Thus began the most profound dialogue about life between the God of death and an innocent boy. Pure innocence questions the highest wisdom. The entire discussion is encapsulated in the most profound of the Upanishads, Kathopnishad. The dialogue has a timeless charm and is embedded with jewels of guidance on life. These pearls are beautifully uncovered from the rigor of Sanskrit and presented in a beautifully flowing narrative by the author.

Book excerpt: PRACTICAL TEACHINGS FOR PEACE AND FULFILLMENT In this clear introduction to the Vedanta philosophy of India, you'll discover a new perspective that can bring inner peace, inner strength and improve your relationships for a happier life. This spiritual book written by Paul Hourihan, an American, introduces these ancient teachings in a way that Westerners, in particular, can easily relate to and understand. Why learn about the teachings of Vedanta? - According to Vedanta, ignorance of our real nature is the cause of our suffering and grief. The practical application of this philosophy is the means to Self-discovery, integration and inner peace for those of all faiths and those with no particular faith. - By stressing the universal truths common to all religions, they provide a unifying basis for mutual understanding and peace in a world increasingly fragmented by opposing beliefs. - They provide a foundation for understanding why a moral and ethical life are necessary. - This knowledge gives us the means for realizing our true identity as Children of Immortal Bliss. Using the teachings of the Upanishads, this study covers the main principles and core concepts of Vedanta and covers important subjects such as meditation, nonattachment. It also provides an overview of the mysticism of India and a summary of the Yoga system of thought, as well as the Bhagavad Gita, another key Vedantic scripture. The last section reveals the universality of these teachings through confirmations of great mystics from other traditions including Plotinus, Lao Tzu, Meister Eckhart and the Sufis of Islam. Vedanta shows the way to inner peace, harmony among all peoples, and respect for all life.

Book excerpt: “Enlightenment does exist,” internationally renowned author and meditation master Jack Kornfield assures us. “Unbounded freedom and joy, oneness with the divine . . . these experiences are more common than you know, and not far away.” But even after achieving such realization—after the ecstasy—we are faced with the day—to-day task of translating that freedom into our imperfect lives. We are faced with the laundry. Drawing on the experiences and insights of leaders and practitioners within the Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Hindu, and Sufi traditions, this book offers a uniquely intimate and honest understanding of how the modern spiritual journey unfolds—and how we can prepare our hearts for awakening. Through moving personal stories and traditional tales, we learn how the enlightened heart navigates the real world of family relationships, emotional pain, earning a living, sickness, loss, and death. Filled with “the laughter of the wise,” alive with compassion, After the Ecstasy, the Laundry is a gift to anyone who is seeking peace, wholeness, and inner happiness. It is sure to take its place next to A Path with Heart as a spiritual classic for our time.

Book excerpt: The Upanishads: one of three new editions of the books in Eknath Easwaran's Classics of Indian Spirituality series You are what your deep driving desire is. As your desire is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny. - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (IV.4.5) Over two thousand years ago, the sages of India embarked on an extraordinary experiment. While others were exploring the external world, they turned inward - to explore consciousness itself. In the changing flow of human thought, they asked, is there anything that remains the same? They found that there is indeed a changeless Reality underlying the ebb and flow of life. Their discoveries are an expression of what Aldous Huxley called the Perennial Philosophy, the wellspring of all religious faith that assures us that God-realization is within human reach. The Upanishads are the sages' wisdom, given in intense sessions of spiritual instruction in ashrams, in family gatherings, in a royal court, in the kingdom of Death himself. And Easwaran shows how these teachings are just as relevant to us now as they ever were centuries ago.
