Established in the early days of the Cold War, like most intelligence organisations working under covert conditions, it exceeded the vague powers entrusted to it. It has been the subject of two Royal Commissions in Australia and in recent times several acts of Parliament have been passed in order to make it more accountable to Australia's government and its citizens.

Book Synopsis National Security, Surveillance and Terror by : Randy K. Lippert
Download or read book National Security, Surveillance and Terror written by Randy K. Lippert and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together leading scholars to comparatively investigate national security, surveillance and terror in the early 21st century in two major western jurisdictions, Canada and Australia. Observing that much debate about these topics is dominated by US and UK perspectives, the volume provides penetrating analysis of national security and surveillance practices in two under-studied countries that reveals critical insights into current trends. Written by a wide range of experts in their respective fields, this book addresses a fascinating array of timely questions about the relationship among national security, privacy and terror in the two countries and beyond. Chapters include critical assessments of topics such as: National Security Intelligence Collection since 9/11, The Border as Checkpoint in an Age of Hemispheric Security and Surveillance, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Law Enforcement, as well as Federal Government Departments and Security Regimes. An engaging and empirically driven study, this collection will be of great interest to scholars of security and surveillance studies, policing, and comparative criminology.
Book Synopsis Networks and National Security by : Chad Whelan
Download or read book Networks and National Security written by Chad Whelan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Networks as sets of autonomous organisations working together to achieve individual and shared goals are becoming increasingly important across many areas of public administration. The importance of networks is well known but most analysts would agree that we do not know enough about the dynamics and effectiveness of networks in relation to their internal operations. This is a significant problem as security, intelligence, law enforcement and many other agencies are increasingly required to organise in and through networks to provide national security. In this comprehensive analysis, Chad Whelan presents a highly innovative, qualitative study of networks in the field of national security. Developing our understanding of 'organisational networks' in organisational theory, management and public administration, and 'security networks' in criminology and international relations, he presents a multi-disciplinary analysis of network forms of organisation. Whelan puts forward a methodological framework involving five levels of analysis - structural, cultural, policy, technological and relational - with which we can better analyse and understand the dynamics and effectiveness of networks. This framework is applied to public sector networks operating in the field of counter-terrorism in Australia in a way that is highly relevant to researchers and practitioners in many contexts where government departments and agencies, and the private sector, need to work together. Networks and National Security: Dynamics, Effectiveness and Organisation not only advances our knowledge of networks and national security but also assists with the essential tasks of evaluating and managing networks. Written in a clear and accessible style and featuring a wealth of first-hand accounts concerning the inside operations of networks, this book deals with the crucial subject of inter-agency coordination in the important field of national security.

Download or read book Spooked written by Daniel Baldino and published by NewSouth. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorist acts, most notably 9/11 and the Bali bombings, transformed our attitudes to the secretive world of intelligence, surveillance and security. In this book a prominent group of writers including Michael Mori, Ben Saul, Anne Aly and Peter Leahy lay bare the facts about spying and security in post-9/11 Australia. Their compelling book cuts through panic and fear-mongering to ask hard questions: Is ASIO unaccountable? Is the money we spend on security worth it? Is cyber-terrorism an urgent threat? Are our spies up to the job, and how do we know anyway as we only hear about their failures? Is WikiLeaks good for human rights? Are we trading our privacy for a false sense of security? Spooked untangles the half-truths, conspiracy theories and controversies about the ‘war on terror’, and is a welcome antidote to misinformation and alarm.

Book Synopsis Australia's First Spies by : John Fahey
Download or read book Australia's First Spies written by John Fahey and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia was born with its eyes wide open. Although politicians spoke publicly of loyalty to Britain and the empire, in secret they immediately set about protecting Australia's interests from the Germans, the Japanese - and from Britain itself. As an experienced intelligence officer, John Fahey knows how the security services disguise their activities within government files. He has combed the archives to compile the first account of Australia's intelligence operations in the years from Federation to the end of World War II. He tells the stories of dedicated patriots who undertook dangerous operations to protect their new nation, despite a lack of training and support. He shows how the early adoption of advanced radio technology by Australia contributed to the war effort in Europe. He also exposes the bureaucratic mismanagement in World War II that cost many lives, and the leaks that compromised Australia's standing with its wartime allies so badly that Australia was nearly expelled from the Anglo-Saxon intelligence network. Australia's First Spies shows Australia always has been a far savvier operator in international affairs than much of the historical record suggests, and it offers a glimpse into the secret history of the nation. 'Fills a major gap in the history of Australian intelligence organisations.' - Professor David Horner, author of The Spy Catchers: The Official History of ASIO 1949-1963 'Great intelligence is often shared by great story telling, and John Fahey shares a great story in Australia's First Spies.' - Rear Admiral Paul Becker, USN (Retired), Former Director for Intelligence of the U.S. Pacific Command and Joint Chiefs of Staff

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's Spies and their Secrets tells the inside story of the rise and fall of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) - Australia's premier spy body. Based on thousands of documents never before revealed, along with interviews with over thirty former ASIO officers and many of those spied upon, this fascinating book exposes the secret dimensions of Australia's post-war politics and history. It is certain to provoke debate and controversy. In this ultimate Australian spy story, investigative journalist David McKnight: rewrites the known history of the Petrov Royal Commission; instances actual cases of Soviet espionage in Australia; tells how a gigantic system of security dossiers on ordinary Australians was built up; exposes government and ASIO plans to intern 10 000 people; outlines ASIO's links with the leadership of the NSW branch of the Australian Labor Party; reveals ASIO's extensive use of journalists; outlines ASIO's hidden role in the Vietnam War; and tells how ASIO officers feared that Lionel Murphy was a KGB spy. Australia's Spies and their Secrets is essential reading about Australia and its recent past. 'This book is a fascinating study of ASIO, meticulously researched and destined, no doubt, to become an indispensable source for understanding Australia's spies.' - Jim McClelland, Former Minister in the Whitlam Government

Book Synopsis ASIO Report to Parliament 2013-2014 by : Australian Government
Download or read book ASIO Report to Parliament 2013-2014 written by Australian Government and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASIO'S main responsibility is collecting, analysing and reporting intelligence on threats to security. The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation Act 1979 defines security as the protection of Australia's territorial and border integrity from serious threats, and the protection of Australia and its people from espionage, sabotage, politically motivated violence, the promotion of communal violence, attacks on Australia's defence system, and acts of foreign interference - whether directed from, or committed within, Australia or not.ASIO does not investigate lawful protest activity or purely criminal activities. It is not a law enforcement body and have no powers of arrest, but cooperates closely with law enforcement agencies when there is a criminal link. Its investigations generally focus on detecting the intentions and activities of terrorists, people who seek to act violently for political reasons and people who seek to clandestinely obtain sensitive Australian information. Most of its resources are aimed at preventing a terrorist attack in Australia, countering terrorist-related activity, warning of security threats and countering espionage and foreign interference against Australia. This following is ASIO's annual reported for 2014 to the Australian Parliament.
