Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COMMANDER Gordon McGowan, cast in the role of master of a three-masted bark by order of the U.S. Coast Guard, found himself short on square rigged sailing knowledge and long on re-fitting problems when faced with transforming a battered German prize of war, the Horst Wessel, into a well-found Coast Guard training ship, the Eagle. The period was the end of the Second World War; the place was bomb-shattered Bremerhaven. In the SKIPPER AND THE EAGLE you’ll meet “Doc,” a dentist with a burning ambition to remove an appendix at sea; “Ducky,” an internationally known ocean racing yachtsman, now a naval officer dividing up ships of the German navy among the Allies. There’s a decidedly practical, if unorthodox, British Naval officer who assigns German seamen to Cmdr. McGowan in his search for men to augment his short-handed and inexperienced crew of graduates from boot camp. Cmdr. McGowan (now Capt. Rtd) was the only Coast Guard officer in Germany, a fact which gave rise to a series of amusing episodes. Furthermore, he had been brought up in steam vessels, and his knowledge of sailing ships left much to be desired. In fact, he feels that knowledgeable sailors should read this book if only to feel vastly superior to the author! He has a fully developed sense of humor and a talent for understatement which makes his book delightful reading. When the Eagle was finally made ready for sea, she took off through the mine fields of the North Sea and English Channel. Then under sail, to Funchal, Madeira, where the skipper had his first harrowing experience with rigid protocol. The Eagle enjoyed a long downhill run with the Trade Winds to Bermuda. On the voyage from Bermuda to New York the Eagle was caught in a full-fledged hurricane and the description of this ranks near the top of sea-going literature. The SKIPPER AND THE EAGLE is hearty fare for all with a love of the sea, ships, and the men who sail them. There isn’t a dull page in it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An essential book for courses on Native film, indigenous media, not to mention more general courses . . . A very impressive and useful collection.” —Randolph Lewis, author of Navajo Talking Picture The film industry and mainstream popular culture are notorious for promoting stereotypical images of Native Americans: the noble and ignoble savage, the pronoun-challenged sidekick, the ruthless warrior, the female drudge, the princess, the sexualized maiden, the drunk, and others. Over the years, Indigenous filmmakers have both challenged these representations and moved past them, offering their own distinct forms of cinematic expression. Native Americans on Film draws inspiration from the Indigenous film movement, bringing filmmakers into an intertextual conversation with academics from a variety of disciplines. The resulting dialogue opens a myriad of possibilities for engaging students with ongoing debates: What is Indigenous film? Who is an Indigenous filmmaker? What are Native filmmakers saying about Indigenous film and their own work? This thought-provoking text offers theoretical approaches to understanding Native cinema, includes pedagogical strategies for teaching particular films, and validates the different voices, approaches, and worldviews that emerge across the movement. “Accomplished scholars in the emerging field of Native film studies, Marubbio and Buffalohead . . . focus clearly on the needs of this field. They do scholars and students of Native film a great service by reprinting four seminal and provocative essays.” —James Ruppert, author of Meditation in Contemporary Native American Literature “Succeed[s] in depicting the complexities in study, teaching, and creating Native film . . . Regardless of an individual’s level of knowledge and expertise in Native film, Native Americans on Film is a valuable read for anyone interested in this topic.” —Studies in American Indian Literatures

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sword, the Cross, and the Eagle explores how Christian principles and the natural law tradition consider the use of military force and how they support the just war tradition over other moral traditions of war. By promoting the use of offensive war as justifiable under a just war rationale, the book challenges the Christian communityOs basic assumptions regarding the use of force. In this book, Davis Brown persuasively argues that the just war tradition drives the contemporary military ethos and statecraft of the United States. As the worldOs only superpower and the worldOs standard-bearer for democracy, the United States has more armed forces stationed or deployed outside its borders than all other countries combined. Because of this, the conduct of the United States—for good or ill—has enormous ramifications on the development of norms in international law and statecraft. It therefore behooves the international community to appreciate what values the United States seeks to advance when it resorts to military force.

Book excerpt: He has never feared death-- not in battle, not in tournaments, not even the death he now faces. What he fears is oblivion and the fickle forgetfulness of history; or, worse, that his reign is remembered as a failure. Emperor Maximilian I launches an obsessive campaign, using the finest artists of his time, to manipulate future ages, and make certain history gets it right. Set in Renaissance Germany, The Eagle and the Songbird transports readers to another time and place in the company of artist Albrecht Dürer and composer Ludwig Senfl. Author Sara Schneider weaves history, art, music, and politics into an engrossing tale of seduction and betrayal.

Book excerpt: From the Fall of France in June 1940 to Hitler's suicide in April 1945, the swastika flew from the peaks of the High Savoy in the western Alps to the passes above Ljubljana in the east. The Alps as much as Berlin were the heart of the Third Reich.'Yes,' Hitler declared of his headquarters in the Bavarian Alps, 'I have a close link to this mountain. Much was done there, came about and ended there; those were the best times of my life . . . My great plans were forged there.'With great authority and verve, Jim Ring tells the story of how the war was conceived and directed from the Fuhrer's mountain retreat, how all the Alps bar Switzerland fell to Fascism, and how Switzerland herself became the Nazi's banker and Europe's spy centre. How the Alps in France, Italy and Yugoslavia became cradles of resistance, how the range proved both a sanctuary and a death-trap for Europe's Jews - and how the whole war culminated in the Allies' descent on what was rumoured to be Hitler's Alpine Redoubt, a Bavarian mountain fortress.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Battle of the Bulge—which had begun with a German attack that American intelligence failed to anticipate—the Office of Strategic Service (OSS), forerunner of the CIA, revamped its intelligence operations in Europe. Confronted with staff shortages and needing native language speakers, the OSS decided to enlist the cooperation of volunteers from occupied countries for intelligence-gathering operations. As part of Project Eagle, Polish soldiers were recruited and trained to go behind the lines of the Third Reich. Project Eagle tells this fascinating World War II story of intelligence and espionage that until now has been hidden away in the archives of the OSS. The OSS had worked with Polish exiles throughout the war, but Project Eagle would mark a new and dramatic chapter in their cooperation. In early 1945, American intelligence recruited thirty-two Poles—a unique group of men who had been forcibly conscripted into the German Wehrmacht, were captured in France and Italy, and were pulled from Allied prisoner of war camps. They were then trained in intelligence gathering as well as espionage to assist the Allies in their invasion of Germany. Not long after—in March 1945—they parachuted behind enemy lines, equipped only with falsified documents and radios. For six weeks, up until Germany’s surrender, the Polish spy teams roved Germany, assisting ground commanders and providing counterintelligence assistance.
