Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Audacity of Breaking Free! The Audacity of Breaking Free is a recollection of the time I spent in the war fighting for the liberation and independence of Zimbabwe and the following events long after that war. I have tried to be as realistic, honest and true to the events as they happened according to my recollection more than three decades later. I did not have any notes written during the war or after, as a consequence, my minds eye is likely to see things differently from others who went through the same war or similar experiences of that war. I have used many quotes attributing them to certain individuals, but again all these quotes are from my memory and therefore may be remembered differently from others recollection. Experiences in the war were mentally troubling for me and many others who were directly and indirectly involved in it. The rural population had no better fate as they were often caught in the cross fire or assaulted for lending support to the war. Long after the war the day to day life did not seem to mean anything anymore for war veterans like me. www.pombodo.com

Book excerpt: Neoliberalism – idealizing free-market capitalism – sets the boundaries for how we are governed in Canada, no matter who is in power. Author ALEX HIMELFARB explores why these ideas persist when the need for dramatic action on issues like inequality and global warming is obvious to all. Neoliberalism – free market capitalism and the view that “freedom” is society’s highest value – has become embedded in the fabric of Canadian government and society. Neoliberal theorists, marginalized for decades after the Second World War, saw their ideas embraced by Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, who implemented their policies in the 1980s and 90s. Neoliberalism arrived in Ottawa with the Mulroney government in 1984, and has continued as widely accepted common sense about government until today. Neoliberalism’s basic tenets – reduce public services in favour of privatization, cut taxes to benefit business, demonize government deficits, limit government regulation and enable corporations to self-regulate – continue to be promoted by its corporate champions and think tank advocates. Yet the experiences of the last decade in Canada and internationally have demonstrated the emptiness of neoliberalism and demonstrated the crucial role government plays in society. Challenges – from financial market crises to the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change – underscore how vital government action can be in our lives.

Book excerpt: Breaking Free is a practical guide to facilitating self-directing educational processes into participatory action research (PAR) enabling average people to contribute what they can as active participants in research projects. As such, it is designed primarily for these participants rather than the academic researcher in order to introduce participants to authentic contributions they can make as activists in knowledge-making processes. At the same time, Breaking Free guides academic researchers towards helpful practices enriching their often times lonely and isolated existence created by a false sense of "objectivity." A hands-on practical yet disciplined approach to facilitating PAR prepares readers to craft their own individual Guide as they prepare for the PAR life. This opens up the world of knowledge-making to people long silenced by forces intent on controlling knowledge for the educated elite. Breaking Free invites people to contribute as they can and be recognized for this contribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John H. McClendon III's CLR James's Notes on Dialectics: Left Hegelianism or Marxism-Leninism? is the first-ever book devoted exclusively to James's "magnum opus," Notes on Dialectics: Hegel-Marx-Lenin. The seed for this study was planted over thirty years ago when James handed the author his personal copy of Notes. James's contribution to dialectical philosophy and his vast intellectual and scholarly output is rivalled only by the seemingly bottomless depths of McClendon's own analysis and erudition. McClendon provides a thorough-going critique of James's exploration into the dialectic of Hegel, Marx, and Lenin while challenging all the seminal texts on James's Notes'. A book of this magnitude is rare. This is ever more the truth when it is focused on a giant like James who stands at the nexus of so many disciplines: philosophy, history, sociology, Caribbean studies, cultural studies, African, and African American studies. CLR James's Notes on Dialectics: Left Hegelianism or Marxism-Leninism? is a must read for anyone concerned with how revolutionary theory is a guide to contemporary struggles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades the land question remained a topical issue in Zimbabwe. Two decades after independence in 1980, discontent was now constantly and increasingly expressed against the Government by the rural population and war veterans who were demanding the fulfillment of the promises made during the liberation war of taking the land from the mainly white commercial farmers and returning it back to the black majority. Inevitably, contradictions in the Zimbabwean society were coming to a head. Then at the turn of the twenty first century, came the Jambanja era, heralding a landmark in Zimbabwes struggle to redistribute the land. The white farmer had to be replaced by the native black farmer and inevitably some violent skirmishes became part of the Jambanja. The British Crown and its Western allies were up in arms against the Government of Zimbabwe and sanctions were visited upon the country. Who was to blame? As long as the white minority remained on the land, was justice being served? Were the land reform proponents able to confound all predictions and accomplish what was deemed impossible? Were the consequences worth the trouble? In the final analysis, when you discard the politics and separate the facts from the propaganda you will find Zimbabwe a traumatized nation.

Book excerpt: (p)Expanding on his first book, "The Journey of the Heroic Parent," Reedy talks about how all our relationships are connected to the relationship we have with ourselves. He shows how the foundation for intimacy with partners, our ability to parent effectively, and the meaningfulness of our lives can be tied to how well we have unraveled our unique childhood history. "The Audacity to Be You: Learning to Love Your Horrible, Rotten, Self" is a simple but bold exploration into what makes us human and why happiness and connection are elusive for so many.(/p)(p)Reedy's work is counter-intuitive, but the reader will often have the experience of being found and understood as they make their way through his work. Many readers say that reading Brad's work is like you are hearing something for the first time that you already knew but just didn't have the words for it. Dr. Reedy is a renowned author, therapist, podcaster, and public speaker and his approach is accessible and non-threatening. He is a prolific keynote speaker, T.V. and radio guest, and he travels the world presenting to audiences and training therapists. Through stories gathered from decades as a therapist, co-founder, and clinical director of Evoke Therapy Programs, Reedy gives the reader an intimate picture of mental health and healing.(/p)(p)"The Audacity to Be You" explains how our personalities are built, brick by brick. From what it means to be a Self, we learn how to authentically love others. Readers will learn the essence of mental health and with that understanding the stigma of mental illness evaporates. Reedy debunks toxic myths so common in our culture, including "You are only as happy as your least happy child" and how good therapy goes beyond problem solving. Reedy teaches, "In this way of thinking, you don't get to be right anymore. But you get to be a Self. And that is so much better. That is 'The Audacity to Be You.'" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sting in the Twisted Tale is a collection of short stories. A number of the short stories are adapted from several of the authors published books, while a few others are extracts from the many works the author is working on and are yet to be published. In the short stories, the author creates scenes that visually jump to life and keep the reader in tension. The stories are a combination of rousing, dramatic, and at times comical look at the web of complications that arise from day to day life while others depict the brutal realities of war, crime, promiscuity, adultery and lies. As the events of each story begin to intermingle, the episodic discoveries and conflicts only become more interesting and compelling. The twists and turns in the stories keep building on top of complex and driven characters, and the stories crescendo extraordinarily to an unexpected and dramatic end. The characters in some of the stories exhibit unique and memorable qualities of both courage and determination while those in others, after all of their poor choices and moral challenges, the readers still empathizes with them.
