Jordanian EFL teachers have moderate positive cultural perceptions of ICT. Jordanian EFL teachers have a moderate computer competence and have a high access to ICT. Book excerpt: Though diverse, the Arab world boasts a unique culture and native language, both of which are unlike those found in English-speaking countries. Perhaps due to the nature of these differences, Arab-Western relations have been described as existing on one of the world’s great cultural fault-lines. Debate about the potential effects, both positive and negative, of English-medium education and the learning of English in the region’s schools and universities is one expression of this. Even as debate continues, issues of politics, culture, social mobility, and identity are played out in the English language classrooms of the Arab world on a daily basis. The current volume explores some of the concerns related to the place of English and English-medium education in the Arab world. It examines issues of the relationship between English, Arabic, cultural identity and power in the region within a historical and contemporary framework; the experiences of learners from Arabic-medium secondary schools adjusting to English-medium colleges; and the challenges and potential rewards of promoting student-centered classrooms and technology in traditionally teacher-centered environments. These issues are explored from the perspectives of teachers, students, researchers and other stakeholders in Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Sudan.

Book excerpt: This study investigated Jordanian pre-service teachers' beliefs about the learning and teaching of mathematics. One aim of the study was to identify possible explanations for why Jordanian students score much lower than many of their global counterparts on international mathematics tests. On the 2007 Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Jordanian eighth-graders' average score was 427, far below the TIMSS scale average of 500. Jordan ranked 31st out of the 48 participating countries. On the 2011 TIMSS, Jordanian eighth-graders' average dropped to 406, and Jordan's overall ranking was 49th out of 56 participating countries and education systems. In addition to investigating Jordanian pre-service teachers' beliefs, the findings were compared to the findings from a similar study in South Korea (Kim, 2009), the top performing country in mathematics in 2011 and second overall in 2007 on the TIMSS assessments. The participants in this study were 441 pre-service teachers enrolled in 5 universities in Jordan, four public and one private. Participants' data were collected using a questionnaire survey, the same instrument that was used in the Korean study of 2009. Nearly 95% of the Jordanian participants believed in the existence of a mathematical mind indicating that they view mathematics ability as fixed or stable. Other strong beliefs were about the importance of memorization, gender, and mathematics ability. Specifically, 65% of the participants believed that the best way to learn mathematics was to memorize all the formulas, and nearly 70% believed that math ability was not associated with a specific gender. The comparison between Jordanian and Korean pre-service teachers produced significant results about the necessity for memorization and the belief in multiple methods for doing mathematics. Jordanian pre-service teachers believed strongly in the need to memorize in mathematics and in the existence of a single correct way to do mathematics. These are beliefs are not held by Korean pre-service teachers.

Book excerpt: In a Learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL) setting, it is not enough to teach a language without considering that language's culture. EFL teachers should recognize that students are the future's international communicators therefore, it is essential to teach culture and language simultaneously. In this study, Marx and Moss (2011) My Cultural Awareness Profile (My Cap) questionnaire was conducted to collect the current research's data, which is regarded as the teacher's cultural awareness. 120 Iranian English teacher's (41 males and 79 females) were selected to respond this survey questionnaire. The questionnaire reflects Iranian EFL teachers' attitudes, understanding and tendency toward the cultural awareness in the teaching context. Teachers responded to both multiple choice and open-ended questions. Multiple-choice questions are based on the Likert Scale. Each dimension's frequency calculated by IBM SPSS software version 24. Therefore, teacher's attitudes and tendency toward each dimension is separately reflected. The results showed that the Iranian male EFL teachers have more opportunities to communicate with people from the other cultures than the female teachers do. EFL male teachers claimed that they have difficulty in finding global subjects that they plan to each. Female EFL teachers said that they have more knowledge about Iranian customs while males claimed that they have more information about the Iranian history.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this thesis is to investigate to what extent and how music is being used in English language classrooms in the UAE, as well as teachers' and students' attitudes toward music use in language teaching and learning. In this research, questionnaires and interviews were used. Subjects for the study included 160 participants from each of the following groups: Secondary and college female and male teachers and secondary and college female and male students. The findings indicate very little use of music and songs by these UAE teachers."--Abstract, p. iii.
