Book excerpt: This study sought to answer the question: what is the experience of a direct care worker while out in the community with people with mental and physical disabilities? The existing literature was analyzed to give a description of the current state of research in regard to the research subject. The Heuristic Research model was used in order to maintain the author's connection to the research topic. The six phases of the Heuristic method were implemented: initial engagement, immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. Three individuals that worked in the direct care field were interviewed in regard to their experience while out in the community with their clients.The data gathered from the three co-researchers revealed eight common themes: motivated by paycheck versus by client, resentment, exposure of disabilities, community reactions, parental role, family inclusion, desire for improvement, and fun. These themes were composed into a composite narrative to elicit an overall portrayal of the experience of a direct care worker while out in the community with people with mental and physical disabilities. The findings from this study offer information that could be used to analyze the current state of the direct care field. It provides insight into areas of the field that may need improvement, and what direct care workers feel are the positives and negatives of their job.
