Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Attack and Defense of Little Round Top, Gettysburg, July 2, 1863: A Paper Read Before the Ohio Commandery of the Loyal Legion, February 3, 1915 Now, there are two purposes of our Order which we have in common with most of the fifty other American societies of honor: first, the perpetuation of the memory of the services of the Original Companions; and, second, the perpetuation of the principles for which they fought. - In all this we Hereditary Companions have our bounden and grateful part - and one which we can always be doing. But there is also another practice of our Order which has been almost a part of its life so far, and that is in calling out the personal reminiscences, by its Original Companions, of their own observations and experiences in the war. In these, of course, we hereditary members have no real share. But I have thought that where, as in my own case, the Original Companions from whom we derive did not live to speak of what they themselves saw and knew, it might not perhaps be considered altogether unreasonable or unbecoming in us to speak, for them, of the things in which they bore their personal part. At any rate, it is on this assumption that I venture to say something tonight about this particular fight for Little Round Top, Gettysburg, in which my brother, General Strong Vincent, took part. What I shall say is practically a summary of one of the more recent volumes of our Civil War literature. It was published in 1913, and is entitled 'the Attack and Defense of Little Round Top, Gettysburg. Its author is Oliver W. Norton, a successful and retired business man of Chicago, a member and ex - Commander of our Illinois Commandery, and a member of our Commandery-in Chief. The value of this book as an authority consists in two facts: first, that the author, although long entirely blind, has unearthed and brought together original reports and letters of leading men in that fight, most of which were unknown to the historians, and some of which have never before been published; and, second, the fact that the author was himself a personal eye witness of new and important incidents which he relates, connected with some critical moments in that fight. At the time he was brigade bugler, mounted, and bearer of the brigade's headquarters ag. As it was his duty to be always near his brigade commander, Colonel Vincent, he had, in this way, exceptional opportunities of hearing what was said and seeing what was done. When the fight was on, however, and until his services as color bearer were again needed, he seized a musket and fought in the ranks with his regiment. Book excerpt: THE BATTLE OF LITTLE ROUND TOP AS IT HAS NEVER BEFORE SEEN-THROUGH THE EYES OF THE SOLDIERS WHO FOUGHT THERE "Here is the real story of the epic fight for Little Round Top, shorn of the mythology long obscuring this pivotal Gettysburg moment. A vivid and eloquent book." --Stephen W. Sears, author of Gettysburg "Little Round Top has become iconic in Civil War literature and American memory. In the emotional recollection of our great war, if there was one speck on the landscape that decided a battle and the future of a nation, then surely this was it. The story of the July 2, 1863 struggle for that hill outside Gettysburg goes deeper into our consciousness than that, however. The men who fought for it then and there believed it to be decisive, and that is why they died for it. Glenn W. LaFantasie's Twilight at Little Round Top addresses that epic struggle, how those warriors felt then and later, and their physical and emotional attachment to a piece of ground that linked them forever with their nation's fate. This is military and social history at its finest." --W.C. Davis, author of Lincoln's Men and An Honorable Defeat "Few military episodes of the Civil War have attracted as much attention as the struggle for Little Round Top on the second day of Gettysburg. This judicious and engaging book navigates confidently through a welter of contradictory testimony to present a splendid account of the action. It also places events on Little Round Top, which often are exaggerated, within the broader sweep of the battle. All readers interested in the battle of Gettysburg will read this book with enjoyment and profit." --Gary W. Gallagher, author of The Confederate War "In his beautifully written narrative, Glenn LaFantasie tells the story of the battle for Little Round Top from the perspective of the soldiers who fought and died in July 1863. Using well-chosen quotes from a wide variety of battle participants, TWILIGHT puts the reader in the midst of the fight--firing from behind boulders with members of the 4th Alabama, running up the hillside into battle with the men of the 140th New York, and watching in horror as far too many men die. This book offers an elegy to the courage of those men, a meditation on the meaning of war, and a cautionary tale about the sacrifices nations ask of their soldiers and the causes for which those sacrifices are needed." --Amy Kinsel, Winnrer of the 1993 Allan Nevins Prize for From These Honored Dead: Gettysburg in American Culture

[and] the Second Corps in plugging the gap and saving the day for the Union.” —Gettysburg Magazine On the afternoon of July 2, 1863, Lt. Gen. James Longstreet struck the Union left flank with a massive blow that collapsed Dan Sickles’ advanced position in the Peach Orchard and rolled northward, tearing open a large gap in the center of the Federal line on Cemetery Ridge. Fresh Confederates from A. P. Hill’s Corps advanced toward the mile-wide breach, where Southern success would split the Army of the Potomac in two. The fate of the Battle of Gettysburg hung in the balance. Despite the importance of the position, surprisingly few Union troops were available to defend Cemetery Ridge. Major General Winfield S. Hancock’s veteran Second Corps had been whittled from three divisions to less than one after Gibbon’s division was sucked into earlier fighting and Caldwell’s command was shattered in the Wheatfield. With little time and few men, Hancock determined to plug the yawning gap. Reprising Horatio at the Bridge, the gallant commander cobbled together various commands and refused to yield the precious acres in Plum Run ravine. The swirling seesaw fighting lasted for hours and included hand-to-hand combat and personal heroics of which legends are made. The Second Day at Gettysburg expands on David Shultz and David Wieck’s critically acclaimed earlier work The Battle Between the Farm Lanes. This completely revised and expanded study, which includes new photographs, original maps, and a self-guided tour of the fighting, is grounded in extensive research and unmatched personal knowledge of the terrain.

Book excerpt: Desperate battle for the end of the line and the turn of the flank In early July of 1863, the opposing armies of the Confederacy and the Union were inexorably drawn together for battle around the town of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Initially the tactical advantage appeared to be with the advancing Lee, but an outstanding defence from the first Union troops into action, combined with delays and procrastination among the Confederate command, enabled Meade's forces to take up strong defensive positions on rising ground. Nevertheless, Lee determined to engage in a potentially overwhelming assault, which, if successful, would open an invasion of the North and might pressure an end to the civil war. So began the momentous battle which would define the entire conflict. All commanders seek to turn the enemy flank, and, sitting upon a hill, one end of the Union Army line was destined to become famous in military history for the desperate bravery of those who assaulted it and the equally tenacious courage of those who defended it. This is the story of Little Round Top, a fascinating episode, and a battle within a battle, which immortalised the commanders, men and regiments of both sides who fought and died there. This unique Leonaur edition which includes contributions by several authors contains many useful maps and illustrations. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

President Abraham Lincoln delivered these words in his Gettysburg Address, a speech commemorating the fallen soldiers at the Battle of Gettysburg. The three-day battle, the bloodiest ever fought on American soil, was a turning point in the Civil War. The Union claimed victory, and the Confederacy suffered heavy losses, but both sides had thousands of casualties. Author Carin T. Ford explores this pivotal battle in American history and the famous speech that memorialized it forever.
