Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique history of the Civil War considers the impact of nineteenth-century American secret societies on the path to as well as the course of the war. Beginning with the European secret societies that laid the groundwork for Freemasonry in the United States, Mark A. Lause analyzes how the Old World's traditions influenced various underground groups and movements in America, particularly George Lippard's Brotherhood of the Union, an American attempt to replicate the political secret societies that influenced the European revolutions of 1848. Lause traces the Brotherhood's various manifestations, the most conspicuous being the Knights of the Golden Circle (out of which developed the Ku Klux Klan), and the Confederate secret groups through which John Wilkes Booth and others attempted to undermine the Union. Lause profiles the key leaders of these organizations, with special focus on George Lippard, Hugh Forbes, and George Washington Lafayette Bickley. Antebellum secret societies ranged politically from those with progressive or even revolutionary agendas to those that pursued conservative or oppressive goals. This book shows how, in the years leading up to the Civil War, these clandestine organizations exacerbated existing sectional tensions in the United States. Lause's research indicates that the pervasive influence of secret societies may have played a part in key events such as the Freesoil movement, the beginning of the Republican party, John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, Lincoln's election, and the Southern secession process of 1860-1861. This exceptional study encompasses both white and African American secret society involvement, revealing the black fraternal experience in antebellum America as well as the clandestine operations that provided assistance to escaped slaves via the Underground Railroad. Unraveling these pervasive and extensive networks of power and influence, A Secret Society History of the Civil War demonstrates that antebellum secret societies played a greater role in affecting Civil War-era politics than has been previously acknowledged.

Book excerpt: Outsiders have always thought that Skull & Bones is the most mysterious and exclusive of Yale's secret societies. But they're wrong, dead wrong. It pales in comparison to the Devil's Den. Located in a haunting, windowless building in the middle of campus, the Devil's Den is so secretive that no one has ever been seen either entering or leaving its premises. Rumors abound as to who its members are and what goes on behind its closed doors. The Den's alumni supposedly include some of the country's most powerful businessmen and government leaders. But just how widespread is their influence? And just how far are they willing to go to achieve their goals? Justin Karl, a Yale senior and a columnist for the Yale Daily News, has always considered himself an outsider standing on the sidelines of life—an observer who simply records the activities and lives of other people. But everything dramatically changes for Justin once he becomes ensnared by the Den and its intricate scheme. When he finally discovers the truth, the whole terrible truth, Justin finds himself in a race against the clock to foil the Devil's Den and to prevent the course of American history from being drastically altered.

Book excerpt: Secret Societies in America have been manipulating corporations and politicians for over one hundred years. Many of the world's problems and crimes against humanity have their roots in the secret society agenda. This book breaks down the issues with links to books, movies, documentaries, television shows, articles and reflections by many informed Americans who care about what is going on with secret societies in the United States and the world. The author tells his own story of how he became aware that these networks are real and how he came to believe in the reality of secret societies when he became friends with a family that used to live in the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Many people do not realize that secret society networks are prolific in the United States of America. From politics to business, entertainment, and education, secret societies control large parts of American culture. These groups have come together and crafted a plan for the entire world. Hundreds of artists, journalists, teachers, producers, and writers have created documentaries, books, articles, radio, and television programs that help to explain what these secret society networks are up to and what they are doing to the world in which we live. This book highlights many of these works. This book leads the reader to an incredible amount of information that every American needs to know if the republic is to survive for future generations.

This hierarchical pyramid-structured network is constantly recruiting and placing members in key influential positions. In order to orchestrate global events and policy decisions from behind the scenes, many niche secret societies groom and position politicians, media personalities, and other "yes-men" so they may best aid the Great Work.

Book excerpt: In this brilliant work of investigative research, the authors uncover new secrets in the basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Marceille. On the surface, this church is like any other, but it has a hidden dimension, which has been successfully kept secret. Underneath the church lies an underground complex, hidden for over 500 years, where there was a monetary treasure and a pagan religious site once under the control of the Templars. Both the Compagnie de St. Sacrement, a 17th century secret society, and Saunière, the priest at the centre of the enigma of Rennes-le-Château tried to get hold of this underground complex, and its monetary and religious treasure -- and of the secret. Here is the full shocking story!

Book excerpt: The concept of secret societies has not only infatuated the wild imagination of children, but of adults as well. The mystique, the thrill that it provides, of being a part of something that no one else knows about, the sense of circumventing the establishment and the 'normal' world around you - who could pass up that kind of rush?!? Every secret society started somewhere - with a group of unknowns who eventually managed famous deeds, or were made famous by the deeds of their successors, which escalated the total brand value of their society. The point is, you don't need to be another George Washington to head your own secret society. Ever heard of John Heath? No? Well, he's the fellow who started the American Greek student system in 1776, because he failed admission into the two existing Latin fraternities at his college. Today, the result is not only a thriving and flourishing system, but it counts as the pinnacle of US collegiate social life for most students, and provides a valuable network of alumni, including ex-Presidents, Senators, Fortune-500 CEOs, and many other notables among its ranks. But beyond their potential future impacts, secret societies are fun! And they're so incredibly easy to start, it's a surprise there aren't hundreds of them. Oh wait, maybe there are? I guess we'll never know, since we can't count them if they're secret. Are you eager to create your own secret society or club? This book has all the information you'll need to get started. The first rule you need to know is: Respect the 'secret' part of secret society, and don't discuss any details with your boyfriend's best friend's uncle's girlfriend's cousin just to show off how clever you are. Now that we've got that out of the way, continue reading and you'll have your secret society up and running in no time!

But once her family emigrates from Russia to America, her life becomes less clandestine, and she no longer feels she needs to conceal a piece of her identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mysterious, highly influential hidden world of Yale’s secret societies is revealed in a definitive and scholarly history. Secret societies have fundamentally shaped America’s cultural and political landscapes. In ways that are expected but never explicit, the bonds made through the most elite of secret societies have won members Pulitzer Prizes, governorships, and even presidencies. At the apex of these institutions stands Yale University and its rumored twenty-six secret societies. Tracing a history that has intrigued and enthralled for centuries, alluring the attention of such luminaries as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner and F. Scott Fitzgerald, Skulls and Keys traces the history of Yale’s societies as they set the foundation for America’s future secret clubs and helped define the modern age of politics. But there is a progressive side to Yale’s secret societies that we rarely hear about, one that, in the cultural tumult of the nineteen-sixties, resulted in the election of people of color, women, and gay men, even in proportions beyond their percentages in the class. It’s a side that is often overlooked in favor of sensational legends of blood oaths and toe-curling conspiracies. Dave Richards, an alum of Yale, sheds some light on the lesser known stories of Yale’s secret societies. He takes us through the history from Phi Beta Kappa in the American Revolution (originally a social and drinking society) through Skull and Bones and its rivals in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While there have been articles and books on some of those societies, there has never been a scholarly history of the system as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a place like NYC, with 8 million people swarming around on a ten-mile island – what better place could there be for clandestine occult happenings? In New York I always feel amazed at how many parallel realities and uses of the city as an “arena” are simultaneously happening at once. The guy biking past you might be a weed messenger, the guy sitting on a bench might be an undercover cop, the dude standing right next to you on the train could be on his way to a nudist convention, and the guy at the coffee shop could be a member of a cult or secret society. No matter what their supposed purpose, there's something inherently sinister about a secret society. Though most are formed with relatively realistic political and religious goals in mind, their focus on secrecy has made them the target of countless criticisms and theories involving world domination. Of course, the reality is usually much more innocuous, but that doesn't mean that the groups haven't had an impact on world events. Many of these groups kept secrets. They had secret initiation rituals, locked doors, and strict rules against divulging what happened within the confines of the club. With this in mind, I have compiled the most famous and influential secret societies of New York into this book.
