Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly a century, women physical educators kept an iron-fist control of women's intercollegiate athletics within the "sex-separate" spheres of college campuses and under an educational model of competition. According to the author, Ying Wushanley, that control began to loosen significantly when Congress passed Title IX of the Education Amendments in 1972. Title IX meant greater opportunities for women in educational activities, including intercollegiate athletics. Ten years after the passage of the law, however, women not only gave up their educational model but also lost their power and control of women's intercollegiate athletics. Playing Nice and Losing looks into the evolution of women's intercollegiate athletics from a historical perspective and examines the demise of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW). Five major themes emerge: the movement from protectionism to sex-separation of women's college sports; the ascendance of women's sports as a result of the Cold War and power struggle within U. S. amateur sports; the challenge to the sex-separatist philosophy; the NCAA takeover and bankruptcy of the AIAW; and the defeat of the AIAW as a defender of theseparate but equaldoctrine. With Title IX and formerly men's organizations entering the governance of women's intercollegiate athletics, sustaining the sex-separatist AIAW became untenable in American society.

Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Financial Times and Goldman Sachs Business Book of the Year Prize 2008 The Snowball is the first and will be the only biography of the world's richest man, Warren Buffett, written with his full cooperation and collaboration. Combining a unique blend of "The Sage of Omaha's" business savvy, life story and philosophy, The Snowball is essential reading for anyone wishing to discover and replicate the secrets of his business and life success. Warren Buffett is arguably the world's greatest investor. Even as a child he was fascinated by the concept of risk and probability, setting up his first business at the age of six. In 1964 he bought struggling Massachusetts textile firm Berkshire Hathaway and grew it to be the 12th largest corporation in the US purely through the exercise of sound investing principles - a feat never equalled in the annals of business. Despite an estimated net worth of around US$62 billion, Buffett leads an intriguingly frugal life taking home a salary of only £50,000 a year. His only indulgence is a private jet, an extravagance he wryly acknowledges by calling it "The Indefensible". In 2006, he made the largest charitable donation on record, with most of it going to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The Snowball provides a comprehensive, richly detailed insight one of the world's most extraordinary and much loved public figures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: this book will give you a delightful, dopamine-discharge... the key is humility...Dangled above the rum bottles, the exhausted television shone through the haze of cigar smoke. Behind the smoke-screen played another friggin' History Channel-esque, over-dramatized documentary about the upcoming END OF THE WORLD. It was the summer of '99 and the gloom loomed over the patrons. Y2K was nearing, the media frantically spreading the alarm (consequently raising ratings). Once again, We The People, were duped. The anxiety had spread throughout the country, the fear becoming a dense cloud. It absorbed into our minds through osmosis. For the desperate, ignorant, poor and the lonely, there was substantial evidence that the world was in fact coming to an end, and these were going to be the last and, final, days of summer. One only had to read the Rosebud Gazette, "40 freshmen caught...town to be labeled an epidemic..." to assume that their debilitating dread was well warranted.

Book excerpt: 2005 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Using interviews with openly gay and closeted team-sport athletes, Eric Anderson examines how homophobia is reproduced in sport, how gay male athletes navigate this, and how American masculinity is changing. By detailing individual experiences, Anderson shows how these athletes are emerging from their athletic closets and contesting the dominant norms of masculinity. From the locker rooms of high school sports, where the atmosphere of "don't ask, don't tell" often exists, to the unique circumstances that gay athletes encounter in professional team sports, this book analyzes the agency that openly gay athletes possess to change their environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philadelphia: The birthplace of our nation, the City of Brotherly Love, cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, Rocky, and...snowballs? That's right. The national media hardly utters a sentence about Philly's tough but passionate sports fans without mentioning how Santa Claus was once booed and pelted with snowballs. In fact, it doesn't seem that anybody outside the Tri-State area can put that story and others to rest, even though this happened over 40 years ago. No matter what transpires, it seems that the national perspective about our sports community is set in stone. It's almost as if there's some kind of secret handbook used to perpetuate these negative stereotypes about our fans. Luckily, the guys at Philly2Philly.com managed to get a hold of this handbook with "A Snowball's Chance," and we're firing back. Join us as we debate, discuss and defend some of Philadelphia sports history's most dubious moments. You'll read our passionate but fair takes on: The Santa Claus incident-with a first-hand account from Santa himself, Frank Olivo The J.D. Drew incident, from the perspective of broadcasting legend Dan Baker Why Philly fans never recognized the genius of Andy Reid ...and much more! You'll also hear from: Philadelphia's athletes who have made the Tri-State area their permanent home Philly's legendary broadcasting voices Brad Lidge, one of only two Philadelphia Phillies pitchers to close a World Series Championship for the franchise. We're definitely no angels in Philly, but A Snowball's Chance will absolutely shed some much needed positive light on perhaps the most notorious and unfairly maligned fan base on the planet. Philly2Philly.com has become one of the most personalized sites in the Philadelphia area. Visit us at www.philly2philly.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/philly2philly Twitter: @philly2philly
