Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Associated Work of the Women of Indiana I The watchword of the day is organization. Our national motto, .e Pluribus Unum, is receiving a universal illustration. The spirit of combination, of federa tion, has seized upon the people. The manufacturers have combined to force upward the cost of their goods; the wage earners have federated to increase the price of their labor. The day for great accomplishments through individual ao tion is passing away. We are becoming too large a nation for solitary effort to be crowned with large achievement. One man may be raised up to lead in some he roie undertaking, but he secures its highest fulfillment only by gathering his forces and banding them together for united effort. One woman may hear a divine call! For a special work, but she recognizes that the first step toward success is to carry her message to other women, and associate them with her in her labors. The man who isolates himself from his fellow men is like the hermit in his cave - in; the world, but not of it. Every profession, every trade, has its organization. There are the national bar associations, the famous religious councils, the great medical congresses, the electrical conventions, the literary clubs. The political organiza tions shake the country to its foundations, and shape the destinies of the nation; but they, in turn, are largely governed by the mighty influence of federated labor. It would not be an exaggeration to say that every twenty-four hours witnesses the birth of a new organization. People are coming nearer together every year, and the world is growing smaller. Men and women are awakening into a new consciousness of their powers, and are developing that breadth of view which fol lows a wide association with others. It is a great satisfaction to know what our fellow-men are doing; 'a great incentive to learn what difficulties they have over come, what results they have achieved; a great comfort to feel that we are not alone in our work and our discouragements. It makes us strong to know that others are standing with us, shoulder to shoulder; it makes us noble to come out of our selfishness and join hands with our brothers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hours, Earnings, and Conditions of Labor of Women in Indiana Mercantile Establishments and Garment Factories Relations, being charged by Congress with the duty of making con structive recommendations bearing upon industrial problems, was in need of some further current information concerning the existing basis of fixing wages for women, as well as concerning other factors entering into the problem of women in industry. After a survey of the field it developed that the purposes of both the Commission and the Bureau of Labor Statistics could be served as well by choosing the garment factories and the mercantile establishments in Indiana. For study as by making investigations in any other State. The inyi tatien from the Indiana Commission on Working Women was there fore accepted. It is the purpose of the Federal agencies not only to avoid duplication, but to cooperate and Supplement the work of other official agencies wherever such cooperation and supplemental work are practicable and desirable. The principal advantage of cooperation lies in the greater uniform ity effected in methods of collecting and classifying data. When a. Number of kindred investigations in different sections of the country are conducted by several State and Federal agencies, the resulting, individual reports may be extremely valuable, but the cumulative effect is lost unless there is sufficient cooperation or similarity of method to insure a comparability of results. If it is successful, a companion volume of short Indiana biographies might be attempted. Of course, many men and women will be mentioned in connection with events and places, and their names will be brought out in the copious index of the Dictionary. Similarly, there will be numerous cross references to related articles within the volume. Once written, the authoritative articles will be rendered as service able as possible. Only one other state, Texas, is attempting such a state encyclopedia. We believe such a reference work will find a useful place for itself. Your interest is invited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of the Indiana State Medical Association, Vol. 20: Devoted to the Interests of the Medical Profession of Indiana; January to December, Inclusive, 1927 In women, near' or through the menopause, who have associated pelvic pathology with the cervical lesions, have definite indications for more radical surgery. It is better to do a complete re moval than it is to try to patch up other derange ments. Any diseased parts left behind are very likely to cause further disturbance. The lot of the cancer patient, receiving the best known treatment, is unenviable. Her mental and physical torture is terrible and is made all the worse when she learns that her disease could have been prevented by relatively simple measures. Our problem as physicians is partly educational. We must insist on regular, periodic, complete physical examinations. We must be more active in a broader education of the public in the known facts regarding cancer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial Memorial Volume: Indiana University, 1820-1920 For an immediate illustration, take Indiana in the middle of the last century. Our people had the civilized mother tongue. But in 1840 fourteen per cent of the adults could not read or write, and in 1850 twenty-two per cent Of them could not read or write. They had schools, academies, colleges, men and women of learning and cultivation. But in 1848 forty four per cent of our people voted against free public schools, and in this county, the seat of this University, seventy-nine and four tenths per cent of the people voted against free public schools. They had the law, the ancient law developed in southern and western Europe since before the Christian era, and some men learned in the law. But in 1852 our people wrote it into their constitution that a man might be a counsellor at the bar however ignorant, and they prescribed that in criminal cases a jury how ever ignorant should be the sole judges Of the law. They were not without the elements of art. They had music. They had the pioneer melodies that Riley loved to hear the Old Band play. We are not ashamed of the melody nor of the Band. But the great music was not there. The empire of Beethoven was as far from our people generally as the empire of Genghis Khan. The making of a home in America by Europeans since 1492 is the greatest event Of modern history. But everywhere at first it involved descent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art and Artists of Indiana HE appreciation of art in Indiana has made a splendid growth within the last decade. It has been' encouraged and fostered by the women's clubs studying art, and by the Indiana Artists' Traveling Exhibition, which has been sent out annually by the Art Committee of the Indiana Federation of Clubs. This has made an exhibit of original art possible in the large cities, as well as in the smaller villages of the state. The intelligent instruction in art given in the public schools is rapidly creating a definite, discriminating taste and enjoyment for better decoration, pictures of worth, and architecture of intrinsic value. It is our privilege to be the custodian in our time of the heritage of those who are to come. The art of Indiana for years was very meager, but the future art promises to rank with that of the best. A New York art critic recently said The art and artists of Indiana lead all other states in number and quality of production. The work will stress Lincoln's environment during the formative period of his life - from the age of seven to twenty-one during which time he lived in Indiana. The author believes that he has proved that Lincoln had an ample opportunity to secure a liberal education by the time he became of age and that he did so. He also believes that he has set forth sufficient facts to Show that Lincoln was not surrounded by a cramped cultural environment, but that, on the con trary, he lived among men and women the intellec tual equals of any in the Old Northwest. Lincoln's blood and environment explain him. This work, then, is given over almost wholly to these two fac tors. It aims at completeness Since the author be lieves that he has brought together about all there is to be known of Lincoln's life in Indiana. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History Indianapolis and Marion County, Indiana Flora - The central region of Indiana was a favor ite hunting-ground of the Indian tribes that sold it in 1818. Its woods and waters were unusually full of game. There were no prairies of any extent and not many swamps. The entire surface was densely covered with trees. On the uplands, which were dry and rolling, the sugar, white and blue ash, black walnut, white walnut or butternut, white oak, red beech, poplar, wild cherry prevailed; on the more level uplands were bur-oak, white elm, hickory, white beech, water ash, soft maple, and others; on the first and second bottoms, sycamore, buckeye, black wal nut, blue ash, hackberry, and mulberry. Grape vines, bearing abundantly the small, pulpless acid fruit called coon grapes, grew profusely in the bottoms, covering the largest trees, and furnishing more than ample stores for the preserves and pies of the pioneer women. Under all these larger growths, especially in the bottoms, there were dense crops of weeds, among which grew equally dense thickets of spice-brush, - the backwoods substitute for tea, papaw, wahoo, wild plum, hazel, sassafras, red and black haw, leatherwood, prickly ash, red-bud, dog wood, and others. The chief weed growths, says Professor Brown, were nettles and pea-vines matted together, but with these were Indian turnip, - the most acrid vegetable on earth probably, cohosh, lobelia, and, in later days, perfect forests of iron-weeds. There are a good many small remains of these primeval forests scattered through the county, with here and there patches of the undergrowth, and not a few nut-trees, walnut, hickory, and butternut, but the hazel, the spicewood, the sassafras, the plum and black haw and papaw are never seen anywhere near the city, and not frequently anywhere in the county. The Indian turnip is occasionally found, but ginseng has disappeared as completely as the mound-builders, though in the last generation it was an article of considerable commercial importance.
