Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ornamental Arts of Japan, Vol. 2 At what period incrusted-work became a recognised branch of Japanese art industry it is out of our power to say; but there can be no question that it was adopted, though to a small extent, by the early lacquer artists, and is, accordingly, several centuries old. Its highest development was, however, reserved for recent times; and it is probably safe to say that the most important works have been executed in the present century; indeed, many of the purely modern specimens of the art are unquestionably the finest the world has seen of their class. The reason of this is obvious; the modern Japanese artists select designs in which their power of delineation is almost if not altogether unapproachable; and they render them in materials which readily admit of the most artistic and delicate manipulation, and of the most refined colour treatments. Book Synopsis The Boundaries of "the Japanese". by : Eiji Oguma
Download or read book The Boundaries of "the Japanese". written by Eiji Oguma and published by Apollo Books. This book was released on 2017 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in this paperback In this the parallel volume to The Boundaries of 'the Japanese': Volume 1: Okinawa 1818-1972 (2014), renowned historical sociologist Eiji Oguma further explores the fluctuating political, geographical, ethnic, and sociocultural borders of Japan and the Japanese from the latter years of the Tokugawa shogunate to the mid-20th century. Focus is placed first upon the northern island of Hokkaido with its indigenous Ainu inhabitants, and then upon the mainstays of Japan's colonial empire-Taiwan and Korea. In continuing to elaborate on the theme of inclusion and exclusion, the author comprehensively recounts and analyzes the events, actions, campaigns, and attitudes of both the rulers and the ruled as Japan endeavoured both to be seen as a strong, civilized nation by the wider world, and to 'civilize' its disparate subjects on its own terms. Book Synopsis Radicals and Realists in the Japanese Nonverbal Arts by : Thomas R. H. Havens
Download or read book Radicals and Realists in the Japanese Nonverbal Arts written by Thomas R. H. Havens and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2006-07-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radicals and Realists is the first book in any language to discuss Japan’s avant-garde artists, their work, and the historical environment in which they produced it during the two most creative decades of the twentieth century, the 1950s and 1960s. Many of the artists were radicals, rebelling against existing canons and established authority. Yet at the same time they were realists in choosing concrete materials, sounds, and themes from everyday life for their art and in gradually adopting tactics of protest or resistance through accommodation rather than confrontation. Whatever the means of expression, the production of art was never devoid of historical context or political implication. Focusing on the nonverbal genres of painting, sculpture, dance choreography, and music composition, this work shows that generational and political differences, not artistic doctrines, largely account for the divergent stances artists took vis-a-vis modernism, the international arts community, Japan’s ties to the United States, and the alliance of corporate and bureaucratic interests that solidified in Japan during the 1960s. After surveying censorship and arts policy during the American occupation of Japan (1945–1952), the narrative divides into two chronological sections dealing with the 1950s and 1960s, bisected by the rise of an artistic underground in Shinjuku and the security treaty crisis of May 1960. The first section treats Japanese artists who studied abroad as well as the vast and varied experiments in each of the nonverbal avant-garde arts that took place within Japan during the 1950s, after long years of artistic insularity and near-stasis throughout war and occupation. Chief among the intellectuals who stimulated experimentation were the art critic Takiguchi Shuzo, the painter Okamoto Taro, and the businessman-painter Yoshihara Jiro. The second section addresses the multifront assault on formalism (confusingly known as "anti-art") led by visual artists nationwide. Likewise, composers of both Western-style and contemporary Japanese-style music increasingly chose everyday themes from folk music and the premodern musical repertoire for their new presentations. Avant-garde print makers, sculptors, and choreographers similarly moved beyond the modern—and modernism—in their work. A later chapter examines the artistic apex of the postwar period: Osaka’s 1970 world exposition, where more avant-garde music, painting, sculpture, and dance were on display than at any other point in Japan’s history, before or since. Radicals and Realists is based on extensive archival research; numerous concerts, performances, and exhibits; and exclusive interviews with more than fifty leading choreographers, composers, painters, sculptors, and critics active during those two innovative decades. Its accessible prose and lucid analysis recommend it to a wide readership, including those interested in modern Japanese art and culture as well as the history of the postwar years.

This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, Its History, Arts, and Literature, Vol. 2 By the beginning of the twelfth century, the military power, as distinguished from that of the Court and the priests, had fallen, in tolerably equal proportions, into the hands of two families, the Taira and the Minamoto.1 Both were de scended from Emperors, and both were divided into a number of clans established in different parts of the Empire. The Taira had their head quarters in Kyoto, and their clans were para mount in the provinces near the capital. The Minamoto's sphere of influence was in the north and east. It was inevitable that these two should come into collision. The events that immedi ately preluded the shock may be briefly dismissed by saying that they sprang out of a dispute about the succession to the Throne. The Taira tri umphed, and their leader, Kiyomori, became the autocrat of the hour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Japan, Its History, Arts, and Literature, Vol. 2 The nation was, in effect, divided into three factions, - the court nobles (Kuge), the military families (Buke), and the priests. The military men had at the outset no literary attainments: they knew nothing about the Chinese classics or the art of turning a couplet. Arms and armour were their sole study, and the only law they acknowledged was that of might. The central government, altogether powerless to control them, found itself steadily weakened not only by their frank indifference to its mandates, but also by the shrinkage of revenue that gradually took place as the estates of the local captains ceased to pay taxes to Kyoto. Had the Fujiwara family continued to produce men of genius and ambition, the capital would probably have struggled desperately against the growth of provincial autonomy. But the Fujiwara had fallen victims to their own greatness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Prints of Isoda Koryūsai by : Allen Hockley
Download or read book The Prints of Isoda Koryūsai written by Allen Hockley and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He may very well be the most productive artist of the eighteenth century. Refuting outmoded paradigms of connoisseurship and challenging the assumptions of conventional print scholarship, Allen Hockley elevates this important figure from the status of a minor Edo-period artist. He argues that Koryusai excelled by the most significant measure -- he was a highly successful creator of popular commodities. Employing an "active audience" model, Hockley reshapes the study of ukiyo-e as a.
