Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of essays on black short stories written between 1998 and 1976. It aims to say something about the black short story as a genre and the development of the racial situation in America as well. The primary aim is to introduce the reader to this long neglected genre of black fiction. In contrast to the black novel, the short story has hardly been given extensive criticism, let alone serious attention. The individual essays of this collection aim at presenting new points of critical orientation in the hope of reviving and fostering further discussions. They provide a variety of approaches, and a great diversity of critical points of view.

Book excerpt: This presents the artistry of Ralph Parsons Bone, Master Engraver and custom gun and knife maker, in conjunction with the knife-making artistry of Enedino De Leon and several custom gun makers, with whom Bone chose to collaborate his artistry. The Artistry of Ralph P Bone displays the quality and progression of Bone's multifaceted artistry. The book provides details of Bone's life, commencing with his venturing into knife-making, as a kid, and to highlighting his multiple careers. Bone was best known as a custom knife maker, for the first one half of his life, and, later, as a custom gun maker and highly innovative master engraver, which latter profession he pursued until his death. In Section 1, the reader is familiarized with the standard and non-standard knife models, designed and produced by Bone, throughout his career. Specific information is provided to enable the reader to readily identify and to determine the approximate production time line of any Ralph Bone knife. Included are illustrations of all Standard Production knives of the company, along with non-standard production and a few Special Order, prototype, experimental and one-of-a-kind knives produced. Section 1, also, introduces Enedino De Leon, who Bone acclaimed as his favorite knife maker. De Leon commenced his knife making career, as a young man, under Bone's tutorship, and became very famous and perpetuated Bone's knife making legacy for fifty years, until De Leon's own death. Also included in Section 1 is the writer's estimate of the total knife production volume of, both, Bone and Enedino De Leon, at the Ralph Bone Knife Company and throughout their lives. In Section 2, The Gunmaking and Engraving Artistry of Ralph Parsons Bone, delves into Ralph Bone's career as a highly accomplished custom gun maker and Master Firearms Engraver. First was to display the development of Bone's talent as an artist and an entirely self-taught Master Engraver which, commenced when he was a teenager. The writer chose to present examples of Bone's gun making and engravings in date order of his performance, noting the progressive development of his talent, and his unique engraving innovations, which gained him special attention from the industry and c) the infinite attention to detail, with which he executed his work. Also presented are illustrations of Bone's engravings, in conjunction with the talent of a few highly talented custom gun makers with whom he chose to work. With the permission of Master Engraver Ron Smith, included are excerpts from Smith's first book "Drawing & Understanding Scroll Designs (for Artists, Engravers and Collectors)". Specific examples of Ralph Bone's engravings are presented to highlight Smith's instructions. The purpose, in doing so, was to seize the opportunity to orient the most casual reader to the basic characteristics of fine engraving and to point out specific attributes of Ralph Bone's engraving talent. Also in Section 2 are examples of Ralph Bone's Celtic engravings, which captivated a substantial amount of his engraving attention and ingenuity, during the last twenty years of his life. The writer points out that Celtic engraving is not, generally, pursued by most American engravers. Accordingly, along with presenting Bone's engravings, a bit of Celtic history and concepts of Celtic art are included to entice observers' attention and to encourage appreciation of Bone's innovations and creativity at Celtic artistry and engraving. America has produced some of the finest Master Engravers that the world has known. Ralph P Bone, certainly, was among them. "The Artistry of Ralph P Bone" seeks, specifically, to acquaint and to entertain the reader with the man's remarkable multiple talents at knife making, custom gun making and engraving.

Book excerpt: The definitive translation of Sun-tzu's timeless classic of military strategy, Art of War Art of War is almost certainly the most famous study of strategy ever written and has had an extraordinary influence on the history of warfare. The principles Sun-tzu expounded were utilized brilliantly by such great Asian war leaders as Mao Tse-tung, Giap, and Yamamoto. First translated two hundred years ago by a French missionary, Sun-tzu's Art of War has been credited with influencing Napoleon, the German General Staff, and even the planning for Desert Storm. Many Japanese companies make this book required reading for their key executives. And increasingly, Western businesspeople and others are turning to the Art of War for inspiration and advice on how to succeed in competitive situations of all kinds. Unlike most editions of Sun-tzu currently available (many simply retreads of older, flawed translations), this superb translation makes use of the best available classical Chinese manuscripts, including the ancient "tomb text" version discovered by archaeologists at Linyi, China. Ralph Sawyer, an outstanding Western scholar of ancient Chinese warfare and a successful businessman in his own right, places this classic work of strategy in its proper historical context. Sawyer supplies a portrait of Sun-tzu's era and outlines several battles of the period that may have either influenced Sun-tzu or been conducted by him. While appreciative of the philosophical richness of the Art of War, this edition stresses Sun-tzu's practical origins and presents a translation that is both accurate and accessible.

Book excerpt: With more than one hundred illustrations--most in full color--this volume offers a stimulating and insightful account of two dynamic artistic cultures, traditions that have had a considerable impact on modern western art through the influence of artists such as Gauguin. After an introduction to Polynesian and Micronesian art separately, the book focuses on the artistic types, styles, and concepts shared by the two island groups, thereby placing each in its wider cultural context. From the textiles of Tonga to the canoes of Tahiti, Adrienne Kaeppler sheds light on religious and sacred rituals and objects, carving, architecture, tattooing, and much more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The imaginative literature of African and Afro-American authors writing in Western languages has long been seen as standing outside the Western literary canon. In fact, however, black literature not only has a complex formal relation to that canon, but tends to revise and reflect Western rhetorical strategies even more than it echoes black vernacular literary forms. This book, first published in 1984, is divided into two sections, thus clarifying the nature of black literary theory on the one hand, and the features of black literary practice on the other. Rather than merely applying contemporary Western theory to black literature, these critics instead challenge and redefine the theory in order to make fresh, stimulating comments not only on black criticism and literature but also on the general state of criticism today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, Ralph T. Coe has traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada to assemble this collection of Native American art, one of the finest in private hands today. Immersed in the cultures of Native America, he has come to know artists and artisans, traders, dealers, and shop proprietors, selecting the very best they have to offer. The Ralph T. Coe Collection includes representative pieces from most Native American geographic regions and historical periods, beginning with objects dating back to the fourth millennium B.C. Many examples-men's shirts with ermine fringe, weapons, and button blankets-evoke the heroic lifestyle of the past, while small objects, such as tipi and kayak models, dolls, and tiny moccasins, speak to a more intimate significance. Ritual objects imbued with spiritual meaning-masks and katsinas, tablitas and medicine bundles-as well as utilitarian objects, such as pottery and baskets, also have a strong presence. This catalogue tells the stories of nearly two hundred of these objects, combining art history with personal reminiscence, and reveals the role Coe has played in bringing about awareness of the artistic heritage of Native America.-- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
