Book excerpt: "This is simply an outstanding publication..." Don Haddon, New Zealand Wilderness "...one of the best New Zealand books on our sport yet published" Fish and Game New Zealand " one of the most exceptional books on angling published in New Zealand" Harvey Clark, New Zealand Herald "the best combination of the 'how-to and why to' of trout fishing for New Zealand anglers ever available" Dr R. M. McDowall, Fish and Game New Zealand "The credentials of the men who have written this new book are impeccable" Tony Orman, The Marlborough Express Two expert anglers - one a trout scientist and the other an outstanding photographer - combine forces in this new book which will help anglers understand, and catch more and bigger, trout. In a mixture of plain language science, fishing anecdotes and illustrations, they explain how an understanding of trout behaviour, senses, biology and habitat, the seasons and the physical environment will make angling more productive and rewarding. Chapters cover the senses of trout, their feeding behaviour, response to lures and anglers, habitats and feeding niches, fishing strategies, sports fisheries conservation and management and much more. Colour photographs and diagrams illustrate the science and anecdotes and clarify points made in the text. The authors weave these topics into a rich tapestry that will raise anglers' awareness of the ways of trout and of the environment in which they fish - the result is a unique angling book. While the authors live in the South Island of New Zealand, the book draws on their experience and research from throughout the world, and will be relevant in all fisheries where brown, rainbow and brook trout as well as quinnat salmon occur. Dr John Hayes is New Zealand's foremost trout biologist. He is a senior research scientist at Cawthron Institute, Nelson, and was previously with the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. He has extensive research experience with trout and salmon fisheries in New Zealand and also has studied in North America. Presently he leads multidisciplinary research teams studying angling pressure on New Zealand's wild and scenic backcountry rivers, and predictive modelling of trout and salmon response to habitat change. Les Hill is the co-author and photographer of Images of Silver, Stalking Trout and Catching Trout (with Graeme Marshall),and Stalking Stillwaters (with Grant Winter). His photographs and popular articles are regularly featured in fishing magazines in New Zealand, Australia and the United States.

Book excerpt: This book was written for all the fishermen that are around someone catching fish after fish and are too proud or stubborn to ask, “What do you know that no one else knows”. In over 40 years of drift fishing for Steelhead trout I have only had one person walk up to me while I was having success, catching multiple fish and ask me that question. That man had fished for five days with no success and after asking me a couple more questions was able to go back to his spot and within an hour was able to catch his daily limit of Steelhead. Science is just theory until proven wrong, so far my theories have been proven right so I have titled my book, “THE ART /SCIENCE OF DRIFT FISHING FOR STEELHEAD TROUT’.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trout-Fishing in Brooks, Its Science and Art While it would scarcely be cricket to lay the blame of presenting the public with yet another book about Trout-fishing upon the shoulders of that thorough sportsman, my dedicatee, I have a vague idea that he cannot escape all responsibility. For the first lines I ever penned on angling appeared in the correspondence columns of The Fishing Gazette, and related to the capture of a huge pike in lough Conn by one of my sergeants who, producing the skull-bones in evidence, assured me that the monster scaled 63 lbs. Since then, most of my piscatory scribbling has found place in the same famous journal. Nevertheless, the inexcusable conceit which has led to my coming out in book form is my own. Yet, after all, why inexcusable? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The only constant in fishing is that the fish are still trying to avoid being caught as hard today as they were 100 or 1,000 years ago. To improve as anglers, we must be willing to change and evolve.” It’s More Than Fishing is a how-to guide for Texas coastal fishing that addresses a number of key aspects of coastal angling, including the basics of patterning, fishing the Texas surf, choosing lures and baits, common myths and misconceptions, and what to keep in mind when hiring a fishing guide. In addition to these how-to elements, It’s More Than Fishing also includes insight and information from marine biologists, fishing legends, and guides about coastal angling and the importance of conservation. Author Pat Murray has spent more than two decades as a marine conservation professional and more than four decades as a Texas coastal angler, and he emphasizes the critical role of recreational anglers in protecting and enhancing marine resources. Each chapter begins with a handy summary to guide readers through the information, making it easy to jump around. Throughout the book, Murray reminds the reader that angling is part science, but it’s also part art. Similar to fine arts, culinary pursuits, and any other timeless crafts, angling is an evolving skill that has been in practice for centuries. Successful fishing requires a mixture of knowledge, practice, patience, and skill. Murray believes that if anglers view their pursuit as an art, they will not only invest in developing their skills, but their passion for fishing and ocean resources will increase along with their catches.
