Book Synopsis Howling Wolf and the History of Ledger Art by : Joyce M. Szabo
Download or read book Howling Wolf and the History of Ledger Art written by Joyce M. Szabo and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ledger art is the term used to describe Plains Indian drawings and paintings on paper from the second half of the nineteenth century because they were often made on ledger paper readily available from military outposts. Howling Wolf is arguably the single most important ledger artist to emerge from the anonymity of this period. The Southern Cheyenne warrior was not only an extremely skilled artist, he was also the only Plains artist known to have created ledger art in all three phases of the art form: the pre-reservation era, the years from 1875 to 1878 when Indians of the southern Plains were confined at Fort Marion in Florida, and the reservation period. Howling Wolf's drawings while he was a prisoner at Fort Marion and those he made upon returning to the reservation were known, but this book presents the first in-depth examination of his previously undiscovered work from before his incarceration. The author shows ledger art to be a significant record of cultural attitudes of Plains Indian artists at a time when their societies were in great upheaval. She examines the works of art not only as historic documents but as visual statement reflecting the time, place, and society in which they originated. In contrast to the belief that ledger art was a stagnant form adhering to tradition, the author presents ledger art as a dynamic and inventive means of expression."--Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Die Kunst des Salons by : Norbert Wolf
Download or read book Die Kunst des Salons written by Norbert Wolf and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paris Salons of the mid-nineteenth century are famous today above all for the paintings that were rejected more than for those that were actually shown. The rejected works form today's canon of art history and are regarded as heralds of a modern age. This book looks to reassess the other side of the art history of the nineteenth century. Salon Painting has often been dismissed as overly academic or staid. Now art historian Norbert Wolf turns back the pages of history as he reintroduces readers to the artistry and excellence of the Salon Painting in Europe, Britain, Russia and the US. In an opulent new book, illustrated throughout with gorgeous reproductions, Wolf looks at Salon painting from a variety of perspectives, such as the rise of the bourgeoisie and Paris's position as Europe's cultural capitol. Wolf examines masterpieces by Cabanel, Manet, Bierstadt, The Pre-Raphaelites, and Sargent, demonstrating how classical subjects gave way to modern concerns.
Download or read book Art Deco written by Norbert Wolf and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2016-05-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in a new format, this lavishly illustrated volume explores Art Deco art and design from its origin to its present day influences. The Art Deco style is so recognizable and widespread that its original impact on the culture in which it emerged has been all but lost in the clutter of imitation. This book draws our attention back to the birth of Art Deco—a period between two devastating world wars when industrialization was flourishing, interest in archaeology was peaking, and movements such as Cubism, Constructivism, Futurism, and Modernism were turning the art world on its head. Brilliantly designed to reflect the style it celebrates, Art Deco is filled with hundreds of examples of painting, architecture, interiors, jewelry, crafts, furniture, and fashion. Author Norbert Wolf traces the chronology of the Art Deco style by looking at the politics and culture of Europe in the 1920s and early 30s and the artistic movements that paralleled its popularity. He follows Art Deco’s influence in Europe and its spread to the Americas and Asia. Most importantly, this wideranging volume looks beyond the era of Art Deco’s origination to the present day. Pointing to the numerous revivals and contemporary echoes in painting and even literature, this beautiful volume demonstrates the style’s lasting importance.

Download or read book Expressionism written by Wolf Dieter Dube and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1973 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""I know for my own part that I have no program, only the inexplicable longing to grasp what I see and feel, and to find for it the purest expression." The words of German Expressionist Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, co-founder of the "Brücke" movement in Dresden, convey the essence of the revolutionary movement in the arts which overthrew the stifling academicism of Kaiser Wilhelm's Germany and led in the years between 1900 and 1914 to an amazing upsurge of creative activity. The German Expressionists sought simplified forms, new rhythms, intenser colors. The name which has been given to their movement (not by them) suggests that they were preoccupied with the expression of violent emotion; in fact, however, such artists as the member of the "Brücke" group, Kirchner, Heckel, Schmidt-Rottluff, Pechstein and Nolde, were concerned above all with sheer liberation. Their work, and that of their great contemporaries and associates Marc, Macke, Jawlensky, Kandinsky, Klee and Kubin in Munich; Feininger, Beckmann, Barlach and Meidner in Berlin; and Kokoschka and Schiele in Vienna, all of whom worked in related styles, is a decisive and immensely rich contribution to the history of the twentieth-century art. The story is told here by a senior curator of the Bavarian State art collections largely in the vivid and intensely revealing words of the artists themselves; these he sets in context with rare sympathy and insight."--
