Book excerpt: This copy of "Sun Tzu on the Art of War" is a complete translation of the original Chinese work, as translated by Dr. Lionel Giles from Great Britain. Although written in 1910, this translation of Sun Tzu's work continues to be the standard from which other English translations of the Art of War are measured. Dr. Lionel Giles had both a solid background in military affairs and was fluent in Chinese where he served as a representative of the British government. He was uniquely qualified to translate the Art of War in a way that would explain what Sun Tzu meant with each of his passages. The following, without commentary, is the Dr. Giles translation: as it appeared in the copy of original Luzac and Co. book. It has proven to be useful to many. This is a straight translation, devoid of modern definitions and supposed meanings. It is our belief that each man can determine the best meaning for each section of this work. Do not be hemmed in by another person's opinion. This printing of "The Art of War" by Sun Tzu is dedicated to anyone who wishes to understand the nature of human conflict. Both on the battlefield and in the business world. The described techniques can be adapted to both situations quite effectively.

Book excerpt: Sun Tzu's The Art of War has been the premier manual of Chinese military strategy for the past two millennia and, as thousands of Asian businessmen can attest, this classic work is as applicable to the corporate world as it is to the battlefield. This is the only contemporary edition of the classic Lionel Giles translation to contain all of the translator's original notes, to help you better understand Sun Tzu's powerful maxims and apply them in your daily life. John Minford's foreword brings insights to this classic text and its timeless relevance to the modern world. BILINGUAL EDITION: COMPLETE CHINESE AND ENGLISH TEXT This edition also marks the first time Giles' translation has been converted to Hanyu Pinyin—the standard Chinese romanization system. Additionally, the book contains the full Chinese language version of the text, along with Giles' extensive notes, with their original Chinese text references to the historical Chinese commentators, making this edition a treasure to military scholars, martial artists, and those planning to use Sun Tzu's strategies to conquer the business world. Sun Tzu's book will arm you with the knowledge that has allowed those who have studied this classic to gain victory—and often, total domination—over those who remain ignorant of its sage advice.

There are many translations of The Art of War, but this is only truly accurate version written by America's leading expert on Sun Tzu's system. Winner of the Independent Publishers Book Award for the best Multicultural Nonfiction book of the year! Seven Ways Better Than All Other Translations! 1.More complete: Based on the complete compilation of all historical sources and academic research rather than on traditional fragmentary sources. 2. More accurate: Shows the original Chinese phrases (thousands of characters), individually translates each character (a transliteration), translates each phrase into an English sentence, and provides details of the key concepts that cannot be translated. 3.More concise: Its side-by-side format makes it impossible to add or subtract from the Chinese source or secretly add the translator's editorial opinions. All commentaries are clearly separated from the translation and text. 4.More authoritative: Translated by America's leading expert on Sun Tzu, who has written over two dozen books explaining the strategic concepts in the text. 5. More consistent: Eliminates the imprecise word choices that create the obvious internal contradictions so common in most other translations. 6. More balanced: Offers one English sentence for each Chinese phrase to preserve the balance of ideas in the original work. 7.More organized: Retains and numbers the original phrase groups to preserve the contextual relationships for easy study. You can compare this version to other translations and immediately see where other English translation depart from the original Chinese into the translators' own opinions and commentaries. Book excerpt: The Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise dating from the Spring and Autumn period in 5th century BC. The work, which is attributed to the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu ("Master Sun", also spelled Sunzi), is composed of 13 chapters. Each one is devoted to a distinct aspect of warfare and how that applies to military strategy and tactics. For almost 1,500 years it was the lead text in an anthology that would be formalised as the Seven Military Classics by Emperor Shenzong of Song in 1080. The Art of War remains the most influential strategy text in East Asia. It has also had an influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal strategy and beyond. The book was first translated and published into French in 1772 (re-published in 1782) by the Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson Calthrop in 1905. The first annotated English translation was completed and published by Lionel Giles in 1910. Numerous military and political leaders such as Mao Zedong, V Nguyn Gip, and Norman Schwarzkopf have drawn inspiration from the work. This English version is translated by Lionel Giles.Who was Sun Tzu?Sun Tzu was a Chinese general, military strategist, and philosopher who lived in the Spring and Autumn period of ancient China. Book excerpt: This is the world's first complete English translation of "The Art of War" and the most accurate English translation in the world. At present, the best-selling translation of Sun Tzu's art of war on Amazon is actually less than half accurate. This book, translated by Lionel Giles, is full of mistakes and some sentences are omitted because the translator doesn't understand it. At present, none of the popular translations can accurately convey Sun Tzu's thoughts. Much of what the readers see is not actually Sun Tzu really meant, but rather the words the translator imagined. If readers want to see Sun Tzu's art of war, which is closest to his original meaning, my translation is the only choice. If you are interested in Lionel Giles's wrong translation, please refer to: https: //ethanyet.blogspot.com/2020/04/those-words-that-sun-tzu-never-said.htm

The book is not only popular among military theorists, but it has also become increasingly popular among political leaders and those in business management. Book excerpt: Lionel Giles's 1910 edition is the most scholarly and presents the reader an incredible amount of information concerning Sun Tzu's text, much more than any other translation. The Giles' edition of the ART OF WAR was a scholarly work. Dr. Giles was a leading sinologue at the time and an assistant in the Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts in the British Museum. Apparently he wanted to produce a definitive edition, superior to anything else that existed and perhaps something that would become a standard translation. It was the best translation available for 50 years. But apparently there was not much interest in Sun Tzu in English speaking countries since it took the start of the Second World War to renew interest in his work. Several people published unsatisfactory English translations of Sun Tzu. In 1944, Dr. Giles' translation was edited and published in the United States in a series of military science books. But it wasn't until 1963 that a good English translation (by Samuel B. Griffith) was published that was an equal to Giles' translation. While this translation is more lucid than Dr. Giles' translation, it lacks his copious notes that make his so interesting. Dr. Giles produced a work primarily intended for scholars of the Chinese civilization and language.

This has brought forth a theory, that the bulk of these 82 chapters consisted of other writings of Sun Tzu -- we should call them apocryphal -- similar to the WEN TA, of which a specimen dealing with the Nine Situations [15] is preserved in the T`UNG TIEN, and another in Ho Shin's commentary. It is suggested that before his interview with Ho Lu, Sun Tzu had only written the 13 chapters, but afterwards composed a sort of exegesis in the form of question and answer between himself and the King. Pi I-hsun, the author of the SUN TZU HSU LU, backs this up with a quotation from the WU YUEH CH`UN CH`IU: "The King of Wu summoned Sun Tzu, and asked him questions about the art of war. Each time he set forth a chapter of his work, the King could not find words enough to praise him." As he points out, if the whole work was expounded on the same scale as in the above- mentioned fragments, the total number of chapters could not fail to be considerable. Then the numero..

Composed of 13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare, it has long been praised as the definitive work on military strategies and tactics of its time. The Art of War is one of the oldest books on military strategy in the world. It is the first and one of the most successful works on strategy and has had a huge influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, and beyond. Sun Tzu was the first to recognize the importance of positioning in strategy and that position is affected both by objective conditions in the physical environment and the subjective opinions of competitive actors in that environment. He taught that strategy was not planning in the sense of working through a to-do list, but rather that it requires quick and appropriate responses to changing conditions. Planning works in a controlled environment, but in a competitive environment.
