Book excerpt: From the scrolling yellow text of George Lucas' epic Star Wars to the witty, wordy quips that first appear in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the opening title sequence is essential for setting the mood of a movie. In this detailed visual guide and DVD, more than 1,000 films, 300 credit sequences, and the work of over 200 designers are showcased and analyzed to illustrate the power of successful film graphics. The Art of the Title Sequence explores this graphic phenomenon from the dawn of cinema to present day, and includes the work of the most well-known artists, including Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro, as well as the work of later prestigious designers like Tibor Kalman and Milton Glaser. The opening credits of some of the world's most legendary films are featured, including titles for Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest, John Ford's Stagecoach, Woody Allen's Annie Hall, Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times, and Jean-Luc Goddard's Bande a Part. Screen stills are accompanied by insightful narrative into the various films' title sequences and an accompanying DVD shows the selected opening credits in motion, combining to form a package that will intrigue and educate film students and film makers, graphic designers, and film buffs alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOREWORD BY BRENE BROWN and POSTSCRIPT FROM BRAIN PICKINGS CREATOR MARIA POPOVA Rock star, crowdfunding pioneer, and TED speaker Amanda Palmer knows all about asking. Performing as a living statue in a wedding dress, she wordlessly asked thousands of passersby for their dollars. When she became a singer, songwriter, and musician, she was not afraid to ask her audience to support her as she surfed the crowd (and slept on their couches while touring). And when she left her record label to strike out on her own, she asked her fans to support her in making an album, leading to the world's most successful music Kickstarter. Even while Amanda is both celebrated and attacked for her fearlessness in asking for help, she finds that there are important things she cannot ask for-as a musician, as a friend, and as a wife. She learns that she isn't alone in this, that so many people are afraid to ask for help, and it paralyzes their lives and relationships. In this groundbreaking book, she explores these barriers in her own life and in the lives of those around her, and discovers the emotional, philosophical, and practical aspects of THE ART OF ASKING. Part manifesto, part revelation, this is the story of an artist struggling with the new rules of exchange in the twenty-first century, both on and off the Internet. THE ART OF ASKING will inspire readers to rethink their own ideas about asking, giving, art, and love.

Book excerpt: This book is for art market researchers at all levels. A brief overview of the global art market and its major stakeholders precedes an analysis of the various sales venues (auction, commercial gallery, etc.). Library research skills are reviewed, and advanced methods are explored in a chapter devoted to basic market research. Because the monetary value of artwork cannot be established without reference to the aesthetic qualities and art historical significance of our subject works, two substantial chapters detail the processes involved in researching and documenting the fine and decorative arts, respectively, and provide annotated bibliographies. Methods for assigning values for art objects are explored, and sources of price data, both in print and online, are identified and described in detail. In recent years, art historical scholarship increasingly has addressed issues related to the history of art and its markets: a chapter on resources for the historian of the art market offers a wide range of sources. Finally, provenance and art law are discussed, with particular reference to their relevance to dealers, collectors, artists and other art market stakeholders.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual Upon the Searching of Records and the Preparation of Abstracts of Title: Real Property Illustrated by References to the Statutes of Alabama, Colorado Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentuky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania Tennessee, and Wisconsin The law of real property admits of such a va riety and complication of interests in land, and guards the transfer of them with such strictness, as to make an investigation of the title, on a pur chase, or mortgage, or lease, indispensable to the security of the purchaser, or mortgagee, or lessee. The title is made up of a series of documents, re quired to be executed with the solemnities pre scribed by law, and of facts, not usually in the United States evidenced by documents, which show that the claimant is the person to whom the law gives the estate, as the heir, or tenant in dower, and the like. A methodical statement of the con tents of these documents, and facts, and of the evi dence in support of them, constitute An Abstract of Title. The purpose of this work is to state how that abstract should be made, to notice the usual questions of law and doctrines of equity that arise in examining titles, and to refer briefly to the com mon sources of information for the fuller elucida tion of the law. To attempt to expound the law of real property would not only be beyond our limits, but would be inconsistent with the design of making this a manual for actual practice, It is desired to suggest, within limits which admit of the book being put into the pocket, the points to which the attention of'counsel should be drawn. The author demonstrates that using fine art reproductions in the early childhood curriculum allows children to construct their own meanings, teaches diversity, fosters thinking skills, and encourages storytelling. Based on the NAEYC and NAEA standards, this teacher–friendly resource includes lesson ideas, examples of activities, and photographs of children. “The Story in the Picture has the capacity to have a profound impact on how art is viewed by educators by changing the art experience from one of insignificance to one that contributes greatly to the cognitive growth of the child.” —Sharon Shaffer, Executive Director, Smithsonian Early Enrichment Center “Christine Mulcahey’s watchwords are freedom, creativity, and imagination. . . . One can almost feel perspectives opening on her side of the looking glass as children’s voices break through the hush, and we come in touch with the unexpected.” —From the Foreword by Maxine Greene, Teachers College, Columbia University “Early childhood teachers will find this well–written, engaging, and easy–to–read book to be a gift! It makes sense of current research on early childhood and art and speaks to many common insecurities with easy–to–implement suggestions for the classroom.” —Cathy Topal, Smith College “In the tradition of Geraldine Dimondstein and W. Lambert Brittain, Christine Mulcahey shares wise counsel gleaned from conversations with young children about the art they make and the art that they encounter in richly varied preschool programs. —Christine Marmé Thompson, Pennsylvania State University
