Book Synopsis The Dueling Sword by : Claude La Marche
Download or read book The Dueling Sword written by Claude La Marche and published by Paladin Press. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1884, Claude La Marche's L'Épeé was the first book ever written on the use of the épeé, the dueling sword of the 19th century. The book in no way deals with the modern Olympic sport of épeé fencing—rather, it covers in a passionate narrative style the rituals and techniques of combat dueling with the sword, "the war of surprises" that is the épeé bout. This first English translation of La Marche's masterpiece by fencing expert Brian House, The Dueling Sword delivers not only a valuable treatise on historical sword fighting but extraordinary insights into the psychological stress of individual combat. La Marche writes, "the art of the épée is essentially a psychological art," and in his book he provides a comprehensive, integrated system for producing stress in the opponent and conditioning one's self to stress during a duel. Through detailed instruction in the guards, attacks, parries, ripostes, and counters, La Marche drives the reader toward the goal of practical combative fencing: the well-directed, surprising thrust to the opponent's body. The Dueling Sword is a pioneering work in the study of human psychology under stress and a fascinating manual on the traditional combat duel, "a meeting whose outcome is without appeal."

Book Synopsis Franco-Japanese Military Sabre and Bayonet by : Russ Mitchell
Download or read book Franco-Japanese Military Sabre and Bayonet written by Russ Mitchell and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in the Meiji Restoration, Japan entered a period of intense and dynamic martial arts development, allowing, for the first time in centuries for Japanese citizens other than the Samurai class to receive combat training. This training did not happen in isolation, but involved multiple military embassies from France, which helped to train the Imperial Japanese Army from a fledgling organization scarcely capable of defending its own borders, into a force to be reckoned with on the global stage. The Japanese did not passively receive French instruction, but adapted it to their own combat theories, creating methods which became less and less "westernized" during the period from the Meiji Restoration until World War I. This book contains translations from three manuals, as well as notes and appendices to help the reader appreciate these dynamic and sophisticated fencing methods and the context in which they emerged.

Book Synopsis Cold Steel: a Practical Treatise on the Sabre (1889) by : Alfred Hutton
Download or read book Cold Steel: a Practical Treatise on the Sabre (1889) written by Alfred Hutton and published by . This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sabre, with the rapier and epee, has been the third arm of fencing for centuries, and also served as the major cavalry weapon. The art of fencing with the sabre is significantly different to the delicacy of epee or the thrust of rapier, and this book explains why. Hutton begins by looking at the construction of the sabre and how to hold it. This is followed by an explanation of the different strokes and defences, and how to combine attack and defence. He then progresses to the more advanced art of sabre fencing, and how left-handed swordsmen should fight. The treatment is in considerable detail, and is as relevant today for the sabre fencer as when the book was first published, in 1889. Hurtton s treatise on the sabre continues with the ceremonial aspects of the art. He also looks at sabre against bayonet, and the French sword. There are descriptions of assocaited weapons such as the great stick and the constable s truncheon, and the book concludes with a look at the sword-bayonet, short sword and dagger. There are numerous illustrations in the books, with a total of 55 movement drawing diagrams.

For homing with him on the fine ship Centaur was the late governor's daughter, sole heiress to the considerable wealth which Sir John had amassed during his term of office. The long voyage before them with its constant association must afford him opportunities of contriving that the lady and her fortune should be contracted to him by the time they reached Plymouth.
