Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods in the Art of Taxidermy From this, however, we cannot infer that these specimens were mounted or arranged to represent life-like attitudes, but simply that the skins were preserved. If our art is of ancient date, we have no relics of it, as we find in the other arts, as lasting as those of Grecian sculpture, which date back as far as the eighth century B. C. The famous Lion Gate at Mycenae is supposed to be even older. We have no monuments in our art that defy the march of time like the bronze Discobolus of Myron, yet to be seen in the Vatican at Rome. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Taxidermy Millions of birds are killed yearly in the United States by accidents, such as ying against light houses, telegraph wires, or buildings, etc. Fracti cally none of these are saved because there is no one at hand who has the requisite knowledge. If only a fraction of one per cent. Of all the birds killed accidentally, and those shot by sportsmen and thrown away, could be saved and correctly pre pared it would be unnecessary to shoot thousand-s that are now killed every year simply for museum purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Taxidermy, or the Art of Collecting, Preparing, and Mounting Objects of Natural History: For the Use of Museums and Travellers Some persons struck by the appearance of these animals, tried to 'skin indigenous birds, and to mount them. They succeeded indifferently; the body was too forward, and the thighs came be yond the rump. It may be well to observe, that this fault always happens to those who mount a bird for the first time, even if they have received proper instructions. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the 2017 Text Prize Lottie collects dead creatures and lovingly cares for them, hoping to preserve them, to save them from disintegration. Her father understands—Lottie has a scientific mind, he thinks. Her aunt wants it to stop, and she goes to cruel lengths to make sure it does. And her mother? Lottie’s mother died long ago. And Lottie is searching for a way to be close to her. The Art of Taxidermy is a heartbreaking verse novel exploring love and death, grief and beauty, and the ways we try to make sense of it all. Sharon Kernot writes poetry and fiction. Her work has appeared in a variety of journals, magazines and anthologies including Island, Mascara Literary Journal, Best Australian Poems, and Australian Love Stories. ‘Completely mesmerising, fresh and unexpected.’ Diana Sweeney, winner of 2013 Text Prize ‘An intense exploration of grief.’ Steven Herrick ‘[An] exquisite lyrical verse novel...[A] sharply evocative tale.’ West Weekend ‘The work couples the swift, clipped charm of a verse novel and the unpredictable beauty of the Australian landscape in a captivating manner that showcases an author entirely comfortable with her form...Lingers in the mind for weeks afterwards.’ Tulpa Magazine ‘Kernot has created an intriguing tale of mystery and the imagination with a haunting ambience that the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe would recognise and admire...this is a delightful story about grief transformed and the urge to resurrect and to re-create.’ Saturday Paper ‘This book is beautifully written...while the novel is about grief, it is also about the importance of remembering and keeping the memory of loved ones alive.’ Magpies Magazine ‘In lyrical language, Kernot draws a comparison between the Australian bush and death: both are beautiful and desolate at once.’ Readings ‘Kernot’s writing is imbued with life and grace and moments of infectious joy.’ SA Weekend

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Taxidermy, and Home Decoration: Together With General Information for Sportsmen Good books on Taxidermy are not so common that I need hesitate to venture into print with a few directions of my own, written from practice and experience and in so doing I may remark that, with careful observance of instructions given, the student can make the art both a profitable and a delightful recreation. The mere skinning and stuffing of a specimen is but a small portion of the Taxidermist's real work or pleasure. The hand must be turned to the making of cases, and the eye trained to the blending of colors. Taste must be cultivated and exhibited in modelling and molding, and Nature's beauties should be imitated as closely as pos sible. Artificial rocks can be made to look as natural as the moss-grown specimens in the woods, and trees can be formed as graceful as those in their native forests. With the growing fondness for Taxidermy, many la dies are endeavoring to master the art, and in the variety of work necessary to perfect it, feminine taste and skill can be brought effectively into play. The collector can learn to mount his own specimens, the schoolboy his game, and in the general household, a buck's head in the dining-room, or a bright oriole in the parlor, presents a pleasing contrast to other ornaments. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Taxidermy Taxidermy, a name formerly applied to the trade of most inartistically upholstering a skin, has of late years made such enormous strides toward perfection - as much, perhaps, by improvement in methods as by any superior skill on the part of the taxidermist - that I am emboldened to describe in the following pages the results of a number of years' study, experiment, and practical work in the taxidermic field. It is a fact much to be regretted that many taxidermists, by reason of their extreme jealousy and narrowness of mind, are exceedingly loath to communicate new ideas and discoveries to their fellow-workers. But, thanks to the more general enlargement and increase in number of scientific museums of late years, a number of men of genius and education have taken up the study of the art. It is largely owing to their exertions that the taxidermy of the present day is so far in advance of what it was a decade since; and the few works on the subject that they have written have been eagerly devoured by every progressive taxidermist in the country. Some of the methods described in the following pages may seem to involve considerable time and expense. Let it be said, in answer to this, "If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing well."
