Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacred Harp, a tunebook that first appeared in 1844, has stood as a model of early American musical culture for most of this century. Tunebooks such as this, printed in shape notes for public singing and singing schools, followed the New England tradition of singing hymns and Psalms from printed music. Nineteeth-century Americans were inundated by such books, but only the popularity of The Sacred Harp has endured throughout the twentieth century. With this tunebook as his focus, John Bealle surveys definitive moments in American musical history, from the lively singing schools of the New England Puritans to the dramatic theological crises that split New England Congregationalism, from the rise of the genteel urban mainstream in frontier Cincinnati to the bold "New South" movement that sought to transform the southern economy, from the nostalgic culture-writing era of the Great Depression to the post-World War II folksong revival. Although Bealle finds that much has changed in the last century, the custodians of the tradition of Sacred Harp singing have kept it alive and accessible in an increasingly diverse cultural marketplace. Public Worship, Private Faith is a thorough and readable analysis of the historical, social, musical, theological, and textual factors that have contributed to the endurance of Sacred Harp singing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Public Worship The following chapters were originally delivered as the Bohlen Lectures at Philadelphia in January, 1919. Part of their substance was afterwards repeated at S. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, during Lent. That I had thus both American and English audiences in view has helped me greatly in broadening my outlook upon the subject, and will not I hope make these pages less acceptable either to American or English readers. There is considerable difference not only between the rites but also between the customs and traditions of the two Churches; and in this era of Prayer Book revision we English Churchmen have much to learn from the sister Church, which has, with a greater freedom from convention and prejudice, already made considerable alterations in public worship, providing some admirable examples of reform and a few examples also of mistakes to be avoided. Book excerpt: A resource for worshipers today looking to change hardened worship patterns that stand in the way of everyday spirituality. All too often, those who attend church or synagogue find themselves bored or baffled by the service. Their predominant thought is how slowly the time ticks by—and that the service never seems to end. Written for laypeople and clergy of any denomination, The Art of Public Prayer examines how and why religious ritual works—and why it often doesn't work. The Art of Public Prayer uses psychology, social science, theology and common sense to explain the key roles played by ritual, symbolism, liturgy and song in services. Each chapter features "conversation points" designed to get you and your faith community thinking and talking about your own worship patterns—where they succeed, and where they need improvement. The Art of Public Prayer can help you and your fellow congregants revitalize your worship service by allowing you to organize and direct your own worship, making it a meaningful and fulfilling part of your life.

Book Synopsis Public Worship and Public Work by : Christian Batalden Scharen
Download or read book Public Worship and Public Work written by Christian Batalden Scharen and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: In a time of increasing cultural pluralism and vast religious restructuring in the United States, Christian social ethics must take account of how values and commitments shape Christian communities. In Public Worship and Public Work Christian Scharen examines theological claims about the relationship of worship and ethics by means of ethnographic study of the life, worship, and work of three vibrant congregations. Public Worship and Public Work moves beyond two caricatures of the relationship between worship and social ethics. Rather than resolute portrayals of the Church as a reflection of its culture and context and causal accounts of the Church's liturgy forming a Christian witness over and against culture, this book lifts up congregational identity as an area of dynamic interaction between worship, social ethics, and culture. Chapters in Part One are "Liturgy and Social Ethics: Characterizing a Debate," and "Sociologizing the Debate: Identity, Ritual, and Public Commitment." Chapters in Part Two: Three Case Studies in Atlanta's Old Downtown are "'People Living Church': The Catholic Shrine of the Immaculate Conception," "'Jesus Saves': Big Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, '" and "'The Church at Work': Central Presbyterian Church.'" Part Three concludes with "The World in the Church in the World."

Book Synopsis Unceasing Worship by : Harold M. Best
Download or read book Unceasing Worship written by Harold M. Best and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of Discerning Reader's Best Books We are not created to worship. Nor are we created for worship. We are created worshiping. Too often Christians have only thought of worship in terms of particular musical styles or liturgical formats. But a proper view of worship is far larger than what takes place in churches on Sunday mornings. Worship is not limited to specific times, places or activities. God is by his very nature continuously outpouring himself. Because we are created in his image, we too are continually pouring ourselves in various directions, whether toward God or toward false gods. All of us, Christian or not, are always worshiping, whether or not that worship is directed toward God. We are unceasing worshipers. The fruition of a lifetime of study, reflection and experience, this volume sets forth Harold M. Best's understanding of worship and the arts. Widely respected as one of the foremost thinkers and practitioners in his field, Best explores the full scope of worship as continuous outpouring in all settings and contexts. With careful exposition and eloquent analysis, Best casts a holistic vision for worship that transcends narrow discussions of musical style or congregational preference. On this broader canvas, Best addresses popular misunderstandings about the use of music and offers correctives toward a more biblically consistent practice of artistic action. Incisive, biblical, profound and comprehensive, Best's landmark volume is one by which all other statements on worship and the arts will be measured.

Excerpt: ...sermons by the gown, processions (which are of enormous psychological and aesthetic value in those comparatively few churches where they are properly managed) by the officiant's cope, the verger's gown and staff, and the other varied and interesting ornaments that have come down to us. It is common sense, again, that the people should be able to "spot" a bishop by his mitre, a canon by his almuce, a doctor by his robes, to discern a server by his rochet or albe, a deacon by his dalmatic, and to distinguish the officiant from his assistants. All such things add life and interest to public worship, as well as beauty. It is reasonable again that these things should be of such historic types as are familiar through great paintings and sculpture; also that they should be rich and fresh in colour, dignified and undebased in style, and in fact beautiful. It is furthermore a sensible thing that they should submerge the officiant in his office, and free us from the obsession of his frock-coat, his button-hole, or cravat--that we should, for instance, be conscious on Christmas Day of the Christmas chasuble rather than of Dr. Honeytongue's new gloves 1 or Mr. Boanerges' high collar. It is also a matter of common sense that such things should be as significant as possible, not through the inventions of a sickly socalled "mysticism," but through varying their colours and those of the altar according to the season; so that our earthly paradise does not look the same in Lent as in Advent or Passiontide, or in Passiontide as at Easter. I think the layman has also a right to demand from us, as intelligent beings, that 1 Nearly extinct now, gloves--black ones--were fifty years ago still a common pulpit vestment; earlier still they were...
