Book excerpt: Over the course of his acclaimed 60-year career, Gerhard Richter (b. 1932) has employed both representation and abstraction as a means of reckoning with the legacy, collective memory, and national sensibility of post–WWII Germany, in both broad and very personal terms. This handsomely designed book spans the artist’s rich and varied oeuvre from the early 1960s to the present, including photo paintings, portraits, large-scale abstract series, and works on glass. Essays by leading experts on the artist illuminate Richter’s preoccupation with painting in relation to other modes of representation, and emphasize the ongoing importance of the medium’s formal and conceptual possibilities in contemporary art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superbly illustrated, large format book is the definitive retrospective of Gerhard Richter's genre-defying, boundary-blurring, and constantly evolving oeuvre. One of the world's most revered visual artists, Gerhard Richter embraces many concepts in his work and continually thwarts categorization. In this expansive and authoritative overview, Armin Zweite leads readers through every phase of Richter's celebrated career including his early artistic education in East Germany and his later prolific output in West Germany: the black and white photo paintings, the brilliantly conceived color charts and lush, inscrutable gray paintings, installations with glass and mirrors, his landscapes, portraits, and still lifes, and his monumental abstract paintings, which broke records at auction. Also included are selections from Richter's larger-scale thematic works, such as Atlas, his ongoing collection of photographs and newspaper clippings, and October 18, 1977, a series of paintings commemorating the lives and deaths of members of a German left-wing terrorist group. The beautiful plates sections feature exquisite reproductions of more than 250 of his most famous works, including Ten Large Color-Charts (1966), Annunciation after Titian (1973), Faust (1980), Skull with Candle (1983), Funeral (1988), Strip (2012), and Double Gray (2014). Throughout, Zweite's clear-eyed commentary offers an expert appraisal of the breadth of Richter's oeuvre. This six-decade monograph of Richter's work is a visually stunning and articulate appreciation by one of the world's foremost experts on the artist and his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The text is at once a meditation on theories of form and an essay on the painter Gerhard Richter as a philosophical pragmatist. Richter serves as the inspiration for a broader argument about the nature of "art" itself and for what Klinger professes to be a fresh approach to contemporary art more generally. He (1) addresses the widely conceded exhaustion of the modernist-postmodernist paradigm that has been used to negotiate the "essence of art" for decades and (2) offers what he says is a solution to the resulting gap that leaves us unclear on how to make art and talk about it. He draws on Kuhn's definition that a paradigm consists of the pre-theoretical framework of any practice: While rules and principles, where they exist, grow out of the paradigm, the paradigm can guarantee the functioning of a practice in the absence of rules. He sees Richter as relevant because the painter has never accepted the modern, neo-avant-garde, or postmodern movements as paradigms for his production. Klinger maintains that the goal of Richter's artistic program is "to replace traditional essentialist models of artistic form by a pragmatic model" of respecting the properties of actual physical substances at hand, such as paint, and making art in terms of process rather than with a prescribed end. This way, the modernist-postmodernist paradigm is neither affirmed nor perpetuated in the mode of its reversal, critique or deconstruction, but replaced by something else that forms an effective reaction to the situation without directly deriving from it"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located somewhere between Pop Art and Realism, Gerhard Richter's abstract works are the subject of this unique book that brings together 80 works from collections worldwide. Trained in the 1950s as a realistic painter, by the mid-1970s Gerhard Richter began to evolve into a more abstract artist. His large, colorful paintings from that time exposed the process of painting as much as its creative aims. Focusing solely on Richter's abstract work, this book features 80 works on canvas that represent the full range of the artist's experiments away from representational painting. It includes his early works, which called painting itself into question and incorporated personal documents and newspaper images. Also examined here are Richter's series of gray paintings from the 1970s--a reaffirmation of artistic purity; his "Inpainting" series, which made the application of paint and brushstrokes themselves the subject; his color chart paintings, which both neutralize and glorify painting's most emotionally charged element: color. Also included are his later works in which he applied paint with a brush, scraper, and palette knife. Taken as a whole, these brilliant works reveal an artist consistently in dialogue with his work, and with the overarching artistic trends of the time.

Book excerpt: This volume presents and describes 50 of the artist's works with essays by leading Richter experts. It also includes personal testimonials in previously unpublished letters as well as a conversation between Gerhard Richter and Richter expert Uwe Schneede. This book provides new insight into the complexity of Richter's imagery in which banality and evil confront one another: the dreams and aspirations of the times, fast cars and new travel possibilities; personal memories; the oppressive past; contemporary politics; and both trivial and meaningful everyday objects. The cycle 18 Oktober 1977 (1988), which deals with the death of members of the Red Army Faction ('Baader-Meinhof gang') plays an important role in our understanding of the evocative power of these pictures from the 1960s. Richter's intense preoccupation with this event concludes this group of paintings from photographs. This cycle, which was loaned to the Bucerius Kunst forum in Hamburg by the New York Museum of Modern Art, has led to a new interpretation and positioning of Richter's work.

Book excerpt: Gerhard Richter (*1932 in Dresden) has always dealt with the landscape. No other motif has fascinated him as much or kept him so occupied over the years: black-and-white landscapes based on images from magazines and amateur photos; views of mountains and parks painted in thick impasto; softly hued, transparent, illusionist lake scenes. Ever since the subtle Corsica paintings of 1968/69, landscapes have become an established, distinct group of works within the artist's oeuvre. Richter captures reality in a painterly way, such that landscape and abstraction manifest not as opposites but as related concepts. Containing outstanding illustrations and insightful texts, this volume examines Richter's landscapes from the early sixties to the present. (German edition ISBN 978-3-7757-2638-2)
