Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deeply-reported examination of why "doing what you love" is a recipe for exploitation, creating a new tyranny of work in which we cheerily acquiesce to doing jobs that take over our lives. You're told that if you "do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." Whether it's working for "exposure" and "experience," or enduring poor treatment in the name of "being part of the family," all employees are pushed to make sacrifices for the privilege of being able to do what we love. In Work Won't Love You Back, Sarah Jaffe, a preeminent voice on labor, inequality, and social movements, examines this "labor of love" myth—the idea that certain work is not really work, and therefore should be done out of passion instead of pay. Told through the lives and experiences of workers in various industries—from the unpaid intern, to the overworked teacher, to the nonprofit worker and even the professional athlete—Jaffe reveals how all of us have been tricked into buying into a new tyranny of work. As Jaffe argues, understanding the trap of the labor of love will empower us to work less and demand what our work is worth. And once freed from those binds, we can finally figure out what actually gives us joy, pleasure, and satisfaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justin Jesty’s Art and Engagement in Early Postwar Japan reframes the history of art and its politics in Japan post-1945. This fascinating cultural history addresses our broad understanding of the immediate postwar era moving toward the Cold War and subsequent consolidations of political and cultural life. At the same time, Jesty delves into an examination of the relationship between art and politics that approaches art as a mode of intervention, but he moves beyond the idea that the artwork or artist unilaterally authors political significance to trace how creations and expressive acts may (or may not) actually engage the terms of shared meaning and value. Art and Engagement in Early Postwar Japan centers on a group of social realists on the radical left who hoped to wed their art with anti-capitalist and anti-war activism, a liberal art education movement whose focus on the child inspired innovation in documentary film, and a regional avant-garde group split between ambition and local loyalty. In each case, Jesty examines writings and artworks, together with the social movements they were a part of, to demonstrate how art—or more broadly, creative expression—became a medium for collectivity and social engagement. He reveals a shared if varied aspiration to create a culture founded in amateur-professional interaction, expanded access to the tools of public authorship, and dispersed and participatory cultural forms that intersected easily with progressive movements. Highlighting the transformational nature of the early postwar, Jesty deftly contrasts it with the relative stasis, consolidation, and homogenization of the 1960s.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection examines the relevance of trade unions 100 years on from the 1913 Lockout in Dublin. The general argument underpinning the papers in this book is that trade unions are still relevant in the 21st century, since they provide an independent collective representation for workers and address the power imbalance between the worker and employer. All of the chapter authors are based at the Department of Personnel and Employment Relations, Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick. The chapters are grouped under three broad headings: The demand for trade unions in the 21st century; partnership at work and the legal context of union recognition; and case studies dealing with union organising and recognition campaigns This book provides a focus on an area not covered in any detailed way by any comparable text book.It will be of interest to undergraduates and postgraduates in the area of employment relations and to practioners such as trade union officials and human resource managers. In addition it will be of interest to a wider body of academics internationally who wish to understand trade unions in Ireland for comparative purposes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The enforcement of international contracts in the European Union is increasingly dependent on Community (rather than national) private international law. This book examines the present status and future prospects of Community private international law in the contractual area. It focuses in particular upon the joint analysis of the Rome Convention of 19 June 1980 on the law applicable to contractual obligations (which is likely to be converted in the near future into the Rome I-regulation) and the Brussels I-regulation. Rather than attempting a comprehensive study of Brussels I and Rome I, this book examines a number of key issues considered particularly pertinent from the point of view of the coherence between both instruments. This approach should contribute to the consistency of Community policy-making and legislation in the field of international contracts, to the benefit of market participants. This book is the culmination of a research project funded by the European Commission (DG Justice and Home Affairs, Framework programme for judicial co-operation in civil matters) and co-ordinated by the University of Antwerp Belgium. Eminent European experts have contributed to the book which should prove of interest to law makers, academics and practitioners concerned with the enforcement of contracts in a cross-border context.
