Book excerpt: The Art of Coarse Boating- May contain strong language. The result of exposure and too many blows to the head, The Art of Coarse Boating is an account of the perils and pitfalls of boating on the cheap. From a very early age Jeff Dray has been absorbed by boats, boating and water, whether it be the local rivers and canal around his home town of Reading, Seaside holidays in the west country, sailing, canoeing, rowing, swimming and blagging rides on anything that floats. Trying to get afloat on a limited budget usually means doing it yourself, hence his home built sailing dinghy that helped him explore Poole harbour in Dorset which gave far more personal satisfaction than a vessel purchased for hard cash. There's even a section about the way that the Navy repairs small boats, using nothing more than a hammer and a lot of foul language. Read about the adventures, trials and tribulations of a form of boating that you won't find at the boat show or at any posh chandlers. It may not be pretty or attract women but will be true to life and hopefully will inspire others to get afloat and enjoy one of our best and most challenging environments. Remember not to take it all too seriously, after all, he spent most of his time laughing at his own exploits, hopefully you will too.

Book excerpt: The first book in a seafaring fantasy trilogy that George R. R. Martin has described as “even better than the Farseer Trilogy—I didn’t think that was possible.” Bingtown is a hub of exotic trade and home to a merchant nobility famed for its liveships—rare vessels carved from wizardwood, which ripens magically into sentient awareness. Now the fortunes of one of Bingtown’s oldest families rest on the newly awakened liveship Vivacia. For Althea Vestrit, the ship is her rightful legacy. For Althea’s young nephew, wrenched from his religious studies and forced to serve aboard the Vivacia, the ship is a life sentence. But the fate of the ship—and the Vestrits—may ultimately lie in the hands of an outsider: the ruthless buccaneer captain Kennit, who plans to seize power over the Pirate Isles by capturing a liveship and bending it to his will. Don’t miss the magic of the Liveship Traders Trilogy: SHIP OF MAGIC • MAD SHIP • SHIP OF DESTINY

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change, the cost-of-living crisis; corporate greed, insomnia and mortality – yes, they all feature here, delicately interwoven with joyful poems celebrating love, family, food, basking lizards. And angels. The poems offer shared recognition; words that chime; satisfying rhymes; there’s the quantum poem, Dark Matter; What of Love and Motorbike tell of 21st Century love; Puddings is nothing but puddings, while The Comfort of Chocolate twins global warming with the pleasure of chocolate; Disclosure is a lighthearted take on The Ancient Mariner; there is the essential Cat poem, Cat and Mouse; an unwelcome sexual encounter is transmuted into dark humour in Pigeon Pecked. Poetry takes words, crumbles them and dunks them in the steaming hot tea (latte if you prefer) of the imagination. Enjoy!

Book excerpt: From the national bestselling, National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author of Bad Land comes “a lively, intensely personal recounting of a voyage into a gifted writer's country and self” (The New York Times Book Review). Put Jonathan Raban on a boat and the results will be fascinating, and never more so than when he’s sailing around the serpentine, 2,000-mile coast of his native England. In this acutely perceived and beautifully written book, the bestselling author of Bad Land turns that voyage–which coincided with the Falklands war of 1982-into an occasion for meditations on his country, his childhood, and the elusive notion of home. Whether he’s chatting with bored tax exiles on the Isle of Man, wrestling down a mainsail during a titanic gale, or crashing a Scottish house party where the kilted guests turn out to be Americans, Raban is alert to the slightest nuance of meaning. One can read Coasting for his precise naturalistic descriptions or his mordant comments on the new England, where the principal industry seems to be the marketing of Englishness. But one always reads it with pleasure.

Book excerpt: When Kenneth Horne died in 1969 at the age of 61, he was described as 'the last of the truly great radio comics'. In a broadcasting career spanning more than 25 years he starred in three of the most popular radio comedy series of all time - "Much-Binding-in-the-Marsh", "Beyond Our Ken" and "Round the Horne". Born in 1907, Horne was the youngest of seven children of a Congregationalist preacher and MP. He won a half-blue for tennis at Cambridge but was sent down for failing his exams. In 1939 he joined the RAF and rose to the rank of Wing Commander before he broke into broadcasting after compeering a troop concert on the BBC. With his brother officer, Richard 'Dickie' Murdoch he created the hugely popular Much-Binding-in the-Marsh set on a remote RAF station 'somewhere in England' which ran for ten years. After leaving the RAF he successfully combined two careers, as a businessman and a broadcaster, until he suffered a stroke in 1958 and had to cut short his business career. During his convalescence he helped to devise the legendary radio series "Beyond Our Ken" in which he presided amiably over a cast of anarchic characters played by Kenneth Williams, Hugh Paddick, Betty Marsden and Bill Pertwee. This was followed by "Round the Horne" which has been called 'the funniest comedy series in radio history'. In 1969 Kenneth Horne collapsed and died on stage while presenting a television awards programme.
