Book excerpt: Donatus was a Roman grammarian of the mid-4th century A.D.; among his pupils was St. Jerome. The first part of Donatus's Ars grammatica, commonly called the Ars minor, became the standard elementary Latin grammar for much of the Middle Ages. Many editions were printed in Mainz in the 1450s and 1460s, some even preceding the Gutenberg Bible. Approximately sixty such editions are known, printed either with Gutenberg's first type (the DK, that is, Donatus and Kalendar type) or with the type of the Gutenberg Bible, but none is complete. All are attested only by vellum fragments of binding waste, strongly suggesting that an even greater number of editions has been entirely lost. No fragments printed on paper are known. The text portions represented by these many fragments are typically identified by the chapter and line numbers assigned by Paul Schwenke, Die Donat- und Kalender-Type: Nachtrag und Übersicht (Mainz, 1903), who based his text primarily on a large number of Mainz and Dutch Prototypography fragments. This later medieval recension contains many interpolations not present in the Carolingian manuscripts of Donatus, as edited by Louis Holtz, Donat et la tradition de l'enseignement grammatical: étude sur l'Ars Donati et sa diffusion (IVe-IXe siècle) et édition critique (Paris, 1981).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From typefounding through typesetting to the printing process itself, this narrative offers a fresh look at the unprecedented success story of the spread of the 'black art' right across Europe in a mere 40 years. Stephan Füssel here analyses the first early printings, placing them in the context of the history of communication and the intellectual climate of a Europe-wide educated elite by about 1500. He foregrounds the tremendous rise in European culture and the history of education experienced as a direct result of this media revolution. In separate chapters Füssel depicts the fast spreading of the art of printing to Italy, France and England, at the same time highlighting the importance of the art of printing for the Roman Catholic Church, the Reformation, the University and the economy. From herbals to a guide for midwives, the present book shows popular instruction at work in the vernacular, as well as the consolidation of knowledge into encyclopedias in the early modern period, and the emergence of new forms of the prose novel and the beginnings of newspapers and periodicals. Finally Stephan Füssel traces the modern resonances of Gutenberg's invention, which persisted in virtually unchanged form for a further 350 years. It underwent decisive technological change through industrialisation and mechanisation in the nineteenth century, and again through digitalisation at the close of the twentieth century. However, as Füssel shows, the mass diffusion of information and the related communications revolution which began with Gutenberg continue unabated.

Book excerpt: The starting point generally acknowledged for the revival of Greek studies in the West is 1397, when the Byzantine Manuel Chrysoloras began to teach Greek in Florence. With his Erotemata, Chrysoloras gave Westerners a tool to learn Greek; the search for the ideal Greek textbook, however, continued even after the publication of the best Byzantine-humanist grammars. The four Greek Donati edited in this book - 'Latinate' Greek grammars, based on the Latin schoolbook entitled Ianua or Donatus - belong to the many pedagogical experiments documented in manuscripts. They attest to a tradition of Greek studies that probably originated in Venice and/or Crete: a tradition certainly inferior to the Florentine scholarship in quality and circulation, but still important in the cultural history of the Renaissance.
