Book excerpt: When the Nazis invaded neutral Belgium in May 1940, defeat and occupation were inevitable but Belgian armed forces held out against a vastly superior enemy for 18 days. The elected Government went into exile in London but King Leopold III controversially remained with his people as a prisoner.??As described in this authoritative book, Belgians continued the fight both outside and inside their country. There were eventually two complete Belgian RAF squadrons. The Colonial Army defeated the Italians in East Africa and the Belgian Brigade fought from Normandy to Germany.??The Belgian Resistance organized escape routes, sabotaged their occupiers' activities and spied for the Allies. 17,000 died or were executed and a further 27,000 survived detention. Meanwhile others collaborated and fought for the Nazis and large numbers were tried post-war for war crimes and treason.??About half the Jews in Belgium in 1940 died in the Holocaust and there are many stirring stories of courage, as well as tragic ones.??This is an overdue and honest account of one Nation's very varied experiences during five years of Nazi occupation and oppression.

Book excerpt: In Belgium’s Dilemma: The Formation of Belgian Defense Policy, 1932-1940, Jonathan Andrew Epstein presents, for the first time in English, a detailed examination of the formation of Belgian defense policy in the eight years leading up to the crucial World War II Blitzkrieg campaign in Western Europe. Belgium’s decision to renounce military ties with France in 1936 has been widely criticized as a fatal mistake but it was in fact a reasonable response to Belgium’s situation and was not a significant factor in the Allied defeat. Drawing on Belgian documents, Jonathan Andrew Epstein looks at the leaders and issues that shaped the Belgian army of 1940 and demonstrates that while mistakes were made, most of the decisions were sound.

Book excerpt: This Intelligence Directorate publication consists of two parts: the Handbook of the Belgian Army of 1906 and a supplementary 'Field Notes on the Belgian Army, 1914, ' which updates the order of battle and organisational details. The contents actually show this second part as including field notes on the French and German Armies, but only the Belgian Army is featured. All the relevant information is provided on the 1906 Army, conditions of service, infantry, cavalry, artillery etc with unit locations, uniforms, badges of rank, arms, equipment and supply. There is also a chapter on the Gendarmerie and Civic Guard. The Belgian Army was made up of two forces: the Field Army and Fortress Troops. In 1914 the Field Army consisted, like the BEF, of six infantry and one cavalry division and its strength, too, was similar at 150,000. Fortress Troops numbered 130,000

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front finally fell silent. In this insightful book, some of Belgium's most renowned historians explain how their country struggled back to its feet after four long years of wartime misery. Many towns and villages had been razed to the ground, factories had been plundered, and harbour installations destroyed. Unemployment was at unprecedented levels, there was an acute shortage of food, and sickness and disease weakened the population. This thoughtful series of essays by leading military, political and social historians chart the immense toll the war took on all aspects of Belgian life, and explore how post-war economic and social changes ushered in the Roaring Twenties; the colourful, frivolous, flamboyant and turbulent decade that was characterised by the rise of the avant-garde, jazz, flapper dresses, and the emergence of modern media such as radio, film and photography. Published to accompany an exhibition organised by the War Heritage Institute at the Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military HIstory in Brussels - 21 September, 2018 - 11 October, 2019. Book excerpt: Through the Iron Bars Two Years of German Occupation in Belgium By Emile Cammaerts The English-speaking public is generally well informed concerning the part played in the war by the Belgian troops. The resistance of our small field army at Liège, before Antwerp, and on the Yser has been praised and is still being praised wherever the tale runs. This is easy enough to understand. The fact that those 100,000 men should have been able to hold so long in check the forces of the first military Empire in Europe, and that a great number of them, helped by new contingents of recruits and led by their young King, should still be fighting on their native soil, must appeal strongly to the imagination. If it be told how the new Belgian army, reorganised and re-equipped after the terrible ordeal on the Yser, is at the present moment much stronger than at the beginning of the war, how it has been able lately to extend its front in Flanders, and how some of its units have rendered valuable help to the cause of the Allies in East Africa and even in Galicia, the story sounds like a fairy tale. There is, in the history of this unequal struggle, the true ring of legendary heroism; it seems an echo of the tale of David and Goliath, or of Jack the Giant Killer; it is full of the triumph of the spirit over the flesh, of independence and free will over fatalism and brute force, of Right over Might. I feel confident that some day a poet will be able to sing this great epic in verses which shall answer to the swinging rhythm of battle and roll with the booming of a thousand guns. But, in the meantime, I should like to say a few words about a much humbler, a much simpler, a much more familiar subject. It awakes no classical remembrances of Leonidas or Marathon. My heroes risk their lives, but they are not soldiers, merely prosaic "bourgeois" and workmen. They have no weapon, they cannot fight. They have only to remain cheery in adversity and patient in the face of taunts. They cannot render blow for blow, they have no sword to flourish against an insolent conqueror. They can only oppose a stout heart, a loyal spirit, and an ironic smile to the persecutions to which they are subjected. They can do nothing-they must do nothing-only hope and wait. But there are as much heroism and beauty in their black frock-coats and their soiled workmen's smocks as in the gayest and most glittering uniforms. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.
