Book excerpt: The whaler Citizen left New Bedford, Massachusetts, on October 29, 1851, for what was to be a three- or four-year voyage to North Pacific. After rounding East Cape (today known as Cape Dezhnev), the northeastern-most point on the mainland of Asia, and entering the Arctic Ocean, the vessel was wrecked in a storm on September 25, 1852. Five members of the crew were lost in the gale. The other 33 men made it to shore, where they were kept alive for nine months by local people, Yupik Eskimos inhabiting this sparsely populated region of Chukotka, Siberia. The Arctic Whaleman; or, Winter in the Arctic Ocean is an account of the ordeal of the crew of the Citizen, written by Lewis Holmes, a clergyman from Edgartown, Martha's Vineyard, based mainly on an oral account of the voyage given to him by Thomas Howes Norton, also of Edgartown, captain of the Citizen. The book has 15 illustrations and includes notes on the native people of the region, including their methods of hunting whales, their huts, manner of preparing food, customs, language, and so forth. The surviving crewmembers of the Citizen finally were rescued by two New England whalers on July 4, 1853. The book concludes with a brief history of the whaling industry. The heyday of the American whaling industry was from 1820 to 1850, when American whalers accounted for 652 vessels in the worldwide whaling fleet of about 882 ships. New Bedford was the leading whaling port, followed by Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Nantucket, Massachusetts, and New London, Connecticut. Whaling in the Arctic Ocean began in 1848, when the bark Superior of Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, first passed through the Bering Strait to hunt the bowhead whale. Within three years, 250 ships, mostly from New England, had made whaling voyages to the seas north of Siberia and Alaska.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arctic Whaleman: Or, Winter in the Arctic Ocean Of all classes of fishermen, the whaleman takes the precedence. This front position will be readily conceded to him, whether we consider the stupendous object of his pursuit, or the vast extent of waters over which he roams to secure his prey, or the dangers and perils peculiar to his avocation, or the immense pecuniary outlay with which the enterprise is carried on. Some of the reasons which induced the author to present to the public this narrative containing an account of the wreck of the whale ship Citizen, and the subsequent exposure and sufferings of her officers and crew in the Arctic Ocean, are the following: - 1. The instance has never been recorded in the history of marine disaster, in which a ship's company, consisting of thirty-three persons, lived so many mouths among the natives in so high a latitude. 2. Being cast helpless and almost destitute upon such a desolate coast, they had to depend principally upon the kindness and generosity of the natives for protection, food, and clothing. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Stories that will entertain, inform, and inspire. Few people would want to test their mettle in an ice-encrusted boat with Ernest Shackleton, or search for the Northwest Passage with Franklin’s doomed crew, or watch their mates being beheaded by angry pirates like Daniel Collins. But it’s quite another thing to read these true accounts while settled into a favorite chair. Here are stoic and hardy sailors who persevered in the face of travails that would have given even Job pause. Their vivid accounts are stronger and more dramatic for their total lack of affectation, their frankness, and their lack of ego. Their gripping stories are custom-made for the imaginative reader who seeks adventure in a more controlled environment, safe, warm, and well fed. Civilized readers with their armchairs anchored firmly to the living room floor. This eclectic collection will not disappoint. Some are classics that have endured through time and continue to excite new readers. Others are hidden gems about to see the light of a reading lamp for the first time in one hundred years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Pursuit of Leviathan traces the American whaling industry from its rise in the 1840s to its precipitous fall at the end of the nineteenth century. Using detailed and comprehensive data that describe more than four thousand whaling voyages from New Bedford, Massachusetts, the leading nineteenth-century whaling port, the authors explore the market for whale products, crew quality and labor contracts, and whale biology and distribution, and assess the productivity of the American fleet. They then examine new whaling techniques developed at the end of the nineteenth century, such as modified clippers and harpoons, and the introduction of darting guns. Despite the common belief that the whaling industry declined due to a fall in whale stocks, the authors argue that the industry's collapse was related to changes in technology and market conditions. Providing a wealth of historical information, In Pursuit of Leviathan is a classic industry study that will provide intriguing reading for anyone interested in the history of whaling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I just begin to find out that whaling will never do for me and have determined to leave the ship here if possible." That sentiment, expressed by a foremast hand aboard the ship Caroline in 1843, is one shared by many of the whalemen in this fascinating book. Interest in Herman Melville's Moby Dick has contributed to a substantial literature on the history and lore of the industry. But not until now has the vast body of surviving whaleship logs and journals been used to paint an encompassing picture of the difficult but colorful life aboard nineteenth-century American whaling vessels. Briton Cooper Busch, author of a definitive history of the American sealing industry, in this book only incidentally discusses the actual chase for whales. His focus instead is the life of whalemen at sea, and particularly the harsh discipline that kept men aboard through long and often dispiriting years. Busch depicts the complex social world aboard ship, defining and detailing such issues as crime and punishment, competing racial elements, the social distance between officers and men, sexual behavior, and the role of women aboard ships. For oppressed, discouraged, or simply bored whalemen, several escapes existed, from the rarest of all mutiny through labor protests of various types, to individual desertion or appeal to an American consul abroad. To each of these topics Busch devotes a chapter. He also provides glimpses of those occasional moments of relief such as a Fourth of July celebration and such somber moments as a death at sea. Fascinating details and original quotations from individual whalemen make this book more than a study of general trends. For anyone with even a casual interest in whaling, it is indispensable.
