The layout of the present campus began with the picturesque vision of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. The German-born architect Theodore Link developed and reinterpreted the Olmsted campus plan, producing designs for fourteen of the nineteen core campus buildings. Today, in New Orleans alone, there are more than 850 churches representing more than seventy denominations. The state's religious buildings encompass not only a wide range of faiths but also a striking diversity of architectural forms. In Religious Architecture in Louisiana, author Robert W. Heck and photographer Otis B. Wheeler provide the first photographic survey of this rich architectural heritage. Their goal has been not to document every religious building in the state (a nearly impossible task) but to isolate prime examples of the historically and architecturally significant. Robert W. Heck presents a brief history of Louisiana's religious architecture. He describes the dominating influence of Catholicism during the eighteenth century, during which time the original Church of St. Louis was built on the site of the present Cathedral of St. Louis, King of France, in New Orleans. He then discusses the burgeoning construction that accompanied the expansion of religious freedom following the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 as Protestants and Jews erected their own places of worship. The author also considers the various architectural influences that have marked Louisiana's religious buildings, from the Colonial style of the eighteenth century, to the Classical Revival and Gothic Revival styles that predominated during the middle part of the nineteenth century, to the Eclectic style that gained currency after the Civil War and persisted until about 1930. By exploring key moments of inspiration between designers and ecologists from the Bauhaus projects of the interwar period to the eco-arks of the 1980s, Anker traces the historical intersection of architecture and ecological science and assesses how both remain intertwined philosophically and pragmatically within the still-evolving field of ecological design. The idea that science could improve human life attracted architects and designers who looked to the science of ecology to better their methodologies. As the book's 150 color photographs reveal, Louisiana is much more than the swamps and marshes with which it is most often associated. C. C. Lockwood, one of the nation's outstanding nature and wildlife photographers and the premier chronicler of the natural wonders of Louisiana and the Gulf region, captures splendid views -- both panoramic and intimate: the jagged bluffs of the Tunica Hills in West Feliciana Parish; cascading waterfalls and winding creeks in the Kisatchie National Forest in central Louisiana; and unobstructed autumnal vistas from the summit of Bates Mountain, near Shreveport. Lockwood travels along many of the state's scenic rivers and lakes, photographing the mist-shrouded Bogue Chitto River at dawn; the steep, sandy banks of Saline Bayou, which is bordered by towering hardwood trees; and the vast, blue expanse of Lake Pontchartrain, the state's largest lake. He returns to his beloved Atchafalaya, the swamp area that is home to a teeming abundance of wildlife, including raccoons, nutria, alligators, snakes, turtles, egrets, herons, owls, and eagles. He travels to the state's prairies, bogs, and cheniers, which, though small in size, nonetheless are very important for the state's wildlife community. Finally, he visits the coast, where he photographs an amazing array of birds on the barrier islands. Lockwood augments his breathtaking photographs with an engaging first-person narrative account of his adventures. He describes the idyllic pleasures of a hundred-mile, five-day canoe trip down the Bogue Chitto and West Pearl rivers, the anticipation of climbing the state's highest peak, Driskill Mountain, and the dangers of trying to navigate five-foot swells in Terrebonne Bay. Throughout the book, Lockwood skillfully conveys the magic that he finds in all of Louisiana and the concern he feels for the state's fragile ecosystem.

From those images, now housed in the Louisiana State Museum, and not widely available until now, 119 plates showcasing fifty-two homes are featured here. Richard Anthony Lewis explores Tebbs's life and career, situating his work along the line of plantation imagery from nineteenth-century woodcuts and paintings to later twentieth-century photographs by John Clarence Laughlin, among others. Providing the family lineage and construction history of each home, Lewis discusses photographic techniques Tebbs used in his alternating panoramic and detail views. A precise documentarian, Tebbs also reveals a poetic sensibility in the plantation photos. His frequent emphasis on aspects of decay, neglect, incompleteness, and loss lends a wistful aura to many of the images -- an effect compounded by the fact that many of the homes no longer exist. This noticeable vacillation between objectivity and sentiment, Lewis shows, suggests unfamiliarity and even discomfort with the legacy of slavery. Poised on the brink of social and political reforms, Louisiana in the mid-1920s had made significant strides away from the slave-based agricultural economy that the plantation house often symbolized. Book excerpt: How do we make sense of the Earth at a moment in which it is presented in crisis? To live in an epoch that is shaped by extensive environmental transformations is to be confronted with risks and uncertainties at scales larger than that of the planet. Paradoxically, while we worry that the sky may be falling on our heads, we remain so immobilized in part maybe because of our failures to comprehend the scales of a story that is difficult both to tell and to hear. Two Cosmograms mediates the dissonance between the environmental question at stake and the narrow repertoire of emotions and imaginations with which we try to understand these issues by exploring speculative fiction as the political art that integrates the story of the cosmos into our own life stories. In response to the expansion of infrastructural systems and resource exploitation beyond the Earth, the two projects -Neck of the Moon and Love your Monsters- engage the architectural imaginations of the Cosmos. The speculative fictions probe the politics and aesthetics of technological systems, both in the extra-planetary environment as well as here on Earth.
