Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Architect, Vol. 119: January-June, 1921 The present depression is, of course, one of the aftermaths of the great conflict, and no man can say just how long it will continue. One may only hazard a guess, and risk the prophecy. But it is my per sonal Opinion that most Of the drastic processes of post-war readjustment should be over in the early part Of 1921 and that we may reasonably look for a gradual recrudescence of confidence from that time on. It may be argued that the present chaos in Wall street - which is the barometer Of economic cycles hardly justifies a spirit Of optimism at this time: But my own conviction is, that that is just what it does justify. The great consolation in having things so bad that they cannot be worse, is that they have got to get better. It is blackest before the dawn, and swift as have been the disillusionments of recent months, the restoration Of confidence will be swifter still when it starts, for the world reacts to prosperity as its rightful heritage, but has no use for trouble. With a return Of confidence money will be easier, building loans more readily available, and to em ploy Webster's famous figure (though times are not so bad as when he used it) The corpse Of public credit will spring to its feet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Architectural Year Book, 1911 The Architectural Fete of 1923 was held in Spanish California. Richer Library was transformed into the moonlit. Trellised patio Of an Old Spanish hacienda surrounded by tile-roofed. Stuccoed buildings which were given life and interest by lighted iron-grilled windows and gay canopied balconies. The corridors presented the spectacle of crowded streets of a Spanish town with an arch over the street here, a balcony overhanging the road there, an iron lantern yonder. Room 400 at the end of the street became a Spanish garden with a quaint. Colorful. Tiled well. Imported from an Old Moorish garden of Seville. At its center. From this well was (lispensed by Spanish pages. A draught the like of which Ponce de Leon sought in his travels to the New \l'orld. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Year Book of the Chapel of the Cross, 1921 Report of the Secretary of the Vestry on the Parish Work in 192] In the year just closed the Parish has tried to take its part in the many sided activity of the general Church in its mission of building up the spiritual life of men and women all over the world. At the same time we have been concerned with many local matters of practical interest connected with our special. Work here at home. There has been a careful supervision of Church property, involving repairs, enlargement of equipment, exten sion, and in general, the introduction of modern methods suit able to the needs of the time. The work of the Vestry has therefore been, not wholly, but largely of a practical character. In the eleven meetings that were held these practical matters were fully discussed and plans were made for the execution of the work. Detailed mention need not be made here of the repairs and improvements made in Church property. There were many. But it is proper to state that the Rector himself has freely given his time and personal service in many of these matters. We are also indebted to Mr. Carter for very valuable assist ance given with great skill and as a labor of love. With his own hands he has repainted and varnished parts of the wood work of the church, and in general he has been zealous in planning and carrying out important repairs and improvements suggested to him by his large experience. Time does not permit the mention here of many similar matters supervised by members of the Vestry and congregation or actually carried out by their own hands. In collecting and disbursing the revenues of the Parish the Vestry has devoted its attention constantly to the needs of the Nation Wide Campaign and to the payment of our quota of the Church Pension Fund. Provision has been made for both of these objects. Other important enterprises which have engaged the attention of the Parish and the Vestry are: The plans for Church Extension and the disposition of the Holt Fund. It will be recalled that at the suggestion of the Bishop acommittee of the Vestry prepared an estimate of the funds needed for the extensive enlargement of the church building and the addition of auxiliary elements similar to the Parish House. The same committee, also at the suggestion Of the Bishop, personally laid this matter before the Diocesan Convention at Durham in the current year. The Convention heartily endorsed the general plan and a large committee of the Diocese was appointed to co-operate with the Parish committee in raising the estimated as needed for this work, according to the estimates of the architect, Mr. Upjohn, of New York. The Parish committee has begun its work and it is hoped that this great enterprise will progress with reasonable rapidity.
