Book excerpt: "The medieval stained glass of St. Peter Mancroft, Norwich, is the most important collection in a country rich in this medium. The glass is of exceptional quality and was painted in the city. It reflects the personal, religious and political interests in Norwich's urban elite, who were worshipping in the leading parish church of one of England's largest cities." "This illustrated volume reconstructs the glazing of much of the eastern arm of the church using extensive documentary and antiquarian evidence. The windows provide opportunities for the discussion of narrative, display and audience, and the glass is set in a local and national stylistic context. There is biographical information relating to all known Norwich glaziers from 1400 to the Reformation; this will constitute a invaluable resource for stained glass studies in the future. The reader will also find details of the documentary evidence for the furnishing and liturgy of St Peter Mancroft; transcripts of all the documents relating to the church's medieval glazing; and descriptions of panels from Mancroft now in other collections."--BOOK JACKET.

She uses context & commentary to create an unprecedented understanding of Joseph Addison's poetry. Haan adds to the corpus of neo-Latin poetry, & also offers to non-Latinists with an interest in Addison access to products of his creative imagination that were hitherto unavailable because of the language barrier. The inclusion of material unkonwn to previous Addison editors considerably enhances the volume's value. Illustrations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pugin’s global influence on church architecture and material reform The year 2012 marked the bicentenary of the gothic revival architect A.W.N. Pugin. His influence as a designer not only spread fast globally, but also played a leading part in the transformation of material culture from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Pugin’s work has been comprehensively reevaluated over the last decade. In this volume sixteen leading scholars from across the globe discuss Pugin’s direct influence on church architecture and furnishing. Beautifully illustrated with a large selection of new photography, Gothic Revival Worldwide, the successor to the volume Gothic Revival published in 2000, reveals how Pugin’s ideas played a profound role in the changing face of material reform in church architecture as an expression of the evolving identity of the churches across the world from North America to Mongolia and the South Pacific. Book excerpt: Engaging essays that roam across uncertain territory, in search of sunken forests, unclassifiable islands, inflammable skies, plagiarized tabernacles, and other phenomena missing from architectural history. This collection by “architectural history's most beguiling essayist” (as Reinhold Martin calls the author in the book's foreword) illuminates the unfamiliar, the arcane, the obscure—phenomena largely missing from architectural and landscape history. These essays by Edward Eigen do not walk in a straight line, but roam across uncertain territory, discovering sunken forests, unclassifiable islands, inflammable skies, unvisited shores, plagiarized tabernacles. Taken together, these texts offer a group portrait of how certain things fall apart. We read about the statistical investigation of lightning strikes in France by the author-astronomer Camille Flammarion, which leads Eigen to reflect also on Foucault, Hamlet, and the role of the anecdote in architectural history. We learn about, among other things, Olmsted's role in transforming landscape gardening into landscape architecture; the connections among hedging, hedge funds, the High Line, and GPS bandwidth; timber-frame roofs and (spider) web-based learning; the archives of the Houses of Parliament through flood and fire; and what the 1898 disappearance and reappearance of the Trenton, New Jersey architect William W. Slack might tell us about the conflict between “the migratory impulse” and “love of home.” Eigen compares his essays to the “gathering up of seeds that fell by the wayside.” The seedlings that result create in the reader's imagination a dazzling display of the particular, the contingent, the incidental, and the singular, all in search of a narrative.
