Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arbutus, 1905 Inexperienced in that Art, we have not attained that sham modesty which leads editors to apologize for their productions. We present this book to you, not with the mournful regret that it is no better, but with the triumphant joy that we have been able to make it what it is. We have not endeavored to improve upon'the reading taste of the general public. We have merely attempted to depict college life as it is found at Indiana University. Our work has not all been one sweet song. At times the music has been entirely wanting. But we have worked bravely on through harmony and discord, unhindered by members of the Faculty and student body, and this book is the result. To the Senior, it represents the review of a course now ended, - a sum mary of the round of college life now completed. For the underclassmen, it is an example to imitate. The words of wisdom uttered here should sink deep into their hearts and become a vital influence in the moulding of their college career. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arbutus, 1902 Of the outsiders we can only hope that they may see us as we see ourselves. There is a certain blindness in human beings which consists in being unable to see things from other people's points of view. The college stage seems ludicrously small, but the tragedies and comedies which are passing are not less real to the participators than those that give zest to the great drama outside. We hope you all love us none the less for anything we may have said of you. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2003-06-17 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the start of the 20th century, the Grand Haven area had begun to establish itself as a desirable vacation spot, as well as the center of a vigorous manufacturing base. Trains, stately steamers, and private automobiles brought visitors to the resorts of their choice, while many new companies joined other well-established firms, broadening employment opportunities for local workers. It was a time of significant change, and the picture postcard helped record those changes. In this book, a companion to The Grand Haven Area: 1860-1960, the history of Grand Haven and the surrounding area is revealed through picture postcards. Lakeshore scenes, resorts, and cottages are paired with images of bridges, streets, homes, and people at work and play to document a remarkable era of originality, enjoyment, and progress.

Book Synopsis The End and the Beginning by : Hermynia Zur Mühlen
Download or read book The End and the Beginning written by Hermynia Zur Mühlen and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in Germany in 1929, The End and the Beginning is a lively personal memoir of a vanished world and of a rebellious, high-spirited young woman's struggle to achieve independence. Born in 1883 into a distinguished and wealthy aristocratic family of the old Austro-Hungarian Empire, Hermynia Zur Muhlen spent much of her childhood travelling in Europe and North Africa with her diplomat father. After five years on her German husband's estate in czarist Russia she broke with both her family and her husband and set out on a precarious career as a professional writer committed to socialism. Besides translating many leading contemporary authors, notably Upton Sinclair, into German, she herself published an impressive number of politically engaged novels, detective stories, short stories, and children's fairy tales. Because of her outspoken opposition to National Socialism, she had to flee her native Austria in 1938 and seek refuge in England, where she died, virtually penniless, in 1951. This revised and corrected translation of Zur Muhlen's memoir - with extensive notes and an essay on the author by Lionel Gossman - will appeal especially to readers interested in women's history, the Central European aristocratic world that came to an end with the First World War, and the culture and politics of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Download or read book The Queen of Paris written by Pamela Binnings Ewen and published by Blackstone Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legendary fashion designer Coco Chanel is revered for her sophisticated style—the iconic little black dress—and famed for her intoxicating perfume Chanel No. 5. Yet behind the public persona is a complicated woman of intrigue, shadowed by mysterious rumors. The Queen of Paris, the new novel from award-winning author Pamela Binnings Ewen, is fiction based on facts, some uncovered only within the past few years, and vividly imagines the hidden life of Chanel during the four years of Nazi occupation in Paris in the midst of WWII. Coco Chanel could be cheerful, lighthearted, and generous; she also could be ruthless, manipulative, even cruel. Against the winds of war, with the Wehrmacht marching down the Champs-Élysées, Chanel finds herself residing alongside the Reich’s High Command in the Hotel Ritz. Surrounded by the enemy, Chanel wages a private war of her own to wrestle full control of her perfume company from the hands of her Jewish business partner, Pierre Wertheimer. With anti-Semitism on the rise, he has escaped to the United States with the confidential formula for Chanel No. 5. Distrustful of his intentions to set up production on the outskirts of New York City, Chanel fights to seize ownership. The House of Chanel shall not fall. While Chanel struggles to keep her livelihood intact, Paris sinks under the iron fist of German rule. Chanel—a woman made of sparkling granite—will do anything to survive. She will even agree to collaborate with the Nazis in order to protect her darkest secrets. When she is covertly recruited by Germany to spy for the Reich, she becomes Agent F-7124, code name: Westminster. But why? And to what lengths will she go to keep her stormy past from haunting her future?
