Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1989, The Arab Horse has been recognized as the definitive work on the subject. This, the third edition, has been substantially revised and redesigned to bring the story of the Arab horse to a new generation of enthusiasts of the breed, and to coincide with the opening of the British Museum's exhibition on 'The Horse from Arabia to Royal Ascot' in May 2012. The first Arab stallion brought into Britain from the Desert of Arabia was Padischah, imported in the 1830s, whose pure-bred line still exists. Since the first edition of The Arab Horse - subtitled 'A Complete Record of the Arab Horses Imported into Britain from the Desert of Arabia from the 1830s' - more imports have been discovered. But, as the author admits, one must draw the line somewhere. This book provides a complete record of all the desert-bred horses imported into Britain after Padischah, from whom present-day pure-bred Arab horses descend, up to 1960. In his introductory chapter, Peter Upton provides a narrative history of the desert journeys of those early British enthusiasts who went in search of horses suitable for shipping back to Britain, most notably Major Roger Upton, Wilfrid Scawen and Lady Anne Blunt (founders of the famous Crabbet Stud in 1878), and the Honourable Miss Dillon. Thereafter, and often in the words of the original importers, the author gives detailed descriptions of the eighty-six horses who have lines existing to this day, as well as detailed tables of descent of mares and stallions, and sections on Bedouin horse breeders, the origins of the Arab horse, and the development of strains. Lavishly illustrated with sixty full-page color portraits of horses by the author, and color reproductions of famous paintings of Arab horses by the Old Masters, and with 160 black-and-white photographs, this revised, expanded and reformatted edition of The Arab Horse will delight and inform all those with an interest in this most beautiful breed.

Book excerpt: In this provocative and timely book, Middle East expert Lee Smith overturns long-held Western myths and assumptions about the Arab world, offering advice for America’s future success in the region. Seeking the motivation behind the September 11 attacks, Smith moved to Cairo, where he discovered that the standard explanation—a clash of East and West—was simply not the case. Middle East conflicts have little to do with Israel, the United States, or the West in general, but are endemic to the region. According to Smith’s “Strong Horse Doctrine,” the Arab world naturally aligns itself with strength, power, and violence. He argues that America must be the strong horse in order to reclaim its role there, and that only by understanding the nature of the region’s ancient conflicts can we succeed. Smith details the three-decades-long relationship between Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and the United States, and gives a history of the Muslim Brotherhood, which would likely play an important role in the formation of a new government in Egypt. He also discusses Lebanon, where tipping the balance against Hezbollah in favor of pro-democracy, pro-US forces has become imperative, as a special tribunal investigates the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. Eye-opening and in-depth, The Strong Horse is much needed background and perspective on today’s headlines.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Arab Horse In the present work Mr. Spencer Borden brings together a most interesting mass of information regarding the relation of the Arab horse to the life and history of the Arabians, and he has kindly asked me to preface the work by speaking more particularly of the natural history and of the antiquity of this breed. About two years ago I began especially to study the Arabian after having devoted many years to the study of the horse in general. The anatomy, the origin, and the natural history of the Arab has naturally attracted less attention than the relation of the Arab to the origin of the thoroughbred racing horse. So I directed my attention especially to the structure of the animal as a perfect living machine, to the part it has played in the history of the world and to the domestication of horses from the earliest times. Book excerpt: The almost spiritual relationship between the Arab and his horse and the longstanding fascination the world over for this purest-bred of all animals lie at the core of this sumptuously illustrated work. Tracing the history of the Arabian (or Arab) horse from before the time of King Solomon to the present day, the text by Peter Upton - author, artist and internationally recognized expert on the subject - explains the true origins of the breed and its role in Arab history. At the heart of the book are beautiful photographs of the horses themselves, arranged by geographical area. With its unrivalled range of illustrations, a comprehensive list of Arab horse organizations, registries and societies, a glossary of Arabic terms and a useful bibliography, here is the definitive book, in words and pictures, of the noblest breed in all the equine world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES the author deals with an exceedingly interesting subject in a most agreeable and instructive manner. His long experience with Arab horses in the East, in the West, on the ranch, in the park, and on Endurance Rides, fits him to speak with authority. I was one of the judges of the first Endurance Ride, conducted under rigid rules and active supervision, in this country, Mr. Harris rode an Arabian mare in this difficult contest, sixty miles per day, for five successive days, with two hundred pounds up, and brought her in in fine shape, to win first place. In addition to being a fine horseman and horsemaster, he is a renowned breeder of Arabian horses. “If one were in quest of accurate and complete information, historical or practical, about the Arab horse—data which would not glorify the Arab at the expense of fact, I should unhesitatingly refer him to the author. He owned the best Arab sire I have ever seen, whether in this country, Europe, or Asia. “He has a large stud farm of pure-bred Arabs. He also used his sires on mares of other breeding, or no breeding, with excellent results. “Whether one agrees with his conclusions or not, I know of no one better fitted to write of the merits and accomplishments of the Arab horse, without indulging in befogging breed-enthusiasm, than the author.”

Book excerpt: This collection of Arabic literature is “a joy to read. . . . a journey through eleven centuries of a lost world, with a surprise on almost every page” (Financial Times). Spanning the fifth to the sixteenth centuries, from Afghanistan to Spain, Night & Horses & The Desert includes translated extracts from all the major classics in an invaluable introduction to the subject of classical Arabic literature. Robert Irwin has selected a wide range of poetry and prose in translation, from the most important and typical texts to the very obscure. Alongside the extracts, Irwin’s copious commentary and notes provide an explanatory history of the subject. What were the various genres and to what extent were they constrained by rules? What were the canons of traditional Arabic literary criticism? How were Arabic prose and poetry recited and written down? Irwin explores the literary environments of the desert, salon, mosque, and bookshop and provides brief biographies of the caliphs, princesses, warriors, scribes, dandies, and mystics who created such a rich and diverse literary culture. Night & Horses & The Desert gives western readers a unique taste of the sheer vitality and depth of the medieval Arab past. “Superb . . . . a revelation.” —The Washington Post “[A] treasure-house of a book. . . . Unequaled for scholarship and entertainment.” —The Independent
