Book excerpt: Welsh Gothic, the first study of its kind, introduces readers to the array of Welsh Gothic literature published from 1780 to the present day. Informed by postcolonial and psychoanalytic theory, it argues that many of the fears encoded in Welsh Gothic writing are specific to the history of Welsh people, telling us much about the changing ways in which Welsh people have historically seen themselves and been perceived by others. The first part of the book explores Welsh Gothic writing from its beginnings in the last decades of the eighteenth century to 1997. The second part focuses on figures specific to the Welsh Gothic genre who enter literature from folk lore and local superstition, such as the sin-eater, cŵn Annwn (hellhounds), dark druids and Welsh witches.

Book excerpt: One of the best-known and best-loved works of Buddhist literature, the Dhammapada forms part of the oldest surviving body of Buddhist writings, and is traditionally regarded as the authentic teachings of the Buddha himself, spoken by him in his lifetime, and memorized and handed on by his followers after his death. A collection of simple verses gathered in themes such as 'awareness', 'fools' and 'old age', the Dhammapada is accessible, instructional and mind-clearing, with lessons in each verse to give ethical advice and to remind the listener of the transience of life. Valerie Roebuck's new translation is accompanied by an introduction examining the language of the Dhammapada, its status as literature and the school of Buddhist teaching from which it comes.

Book Synopsis Denmark by : Robert Thomas Anderson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is about individuals in their daily lives." So writes Robert Anderson, a distinguished anthropologist whose study of Denmark offers the reader a unique opportunity to analyze a culture before development, during development, and as a modern nation. His purpose is to give the reader a feeling of what it means to live in a developing nation and the quality of life afforded by each historical period. "Danish social scientists and historians nurture a long tradition of research matched by those of only a few nations in the thoroughness and skill with which they have retrieved knowledge of their own past." Thus, while the readable content of the book is geared to the student or layman, the original analysis and data behind it will be of special interest to the professional scholar. The book is divided into topics as well as chronological periods. From Chapter One, "Denmark as a Developing Nation," to Chapter Sixteen, "Danes Today," we see both "Noble Life" and "Village Life" — their uniformities and variabilities. Also treated in depth are "The Working Class in 1900," "The Burghers of Old," "The Middle Class," and the subtle transition "From Peasant to Farmer." Finally, the author explores "Urbanization," and "The Culture of the Masses." Dr. Anderson concludes that "Modern Denmark constitutes the culmination (or near culmination) of changes begun in the period of development." And yet, as he goes on to explain, "Even today, Denmark remains a developing nation." In two ways, then, Denmark is a useful paradigm for study. Its past can be constructively compared to the "present" of other currently developing countries in the southern hemisphere and the Third World. On the other hand, modern Denmark is typical of other Western nations which have yet to reap from industrialized society equal opportunity for all members. In still another way the value of Dr. Anderson's analysis is twofold. The responsive reader cannot fail to find in Denmark: Success of a Developing Nation a "microcosm of the kinds of change which have happened, and continue to happen . . . the world over." In addition, however, and perhaps most importantly, the reader finds the fascinating and very unique world of an important European community.

Book excerpt: On the day of her orientation ceremony to start university, Jaun runs into the young Monk Hyegang, an old friend, who has a gift for her, a rosary, from his guardian, Monk Dasol. Upon thanking him for the gift, Jaun is surprised and curious to learn this great monk has been watching her from afar for many years, perhaps since her mother’s death. But why? Jaun was only school-aged back then and can’t remember ever meeting him. Her mother had been teaching Korean language to grade ten boys, and Hyegang was her student. Before Jaun can discover more, Monk Dasol passes away. However, when Jaun’s aunt reads of Monk Dasol’s death in the newspaper, she gives Jaun something that has been in her possession since Jaun’s mother died, something that might give Jaun some answers—her mother’s journal. At Monk Dasol’s cremation ceremony, Monk Hyegang invites Jaun to sit with him and Jaun shows him the journal. She hasn’t read it yet. Together, Jaun and Hyegang decide to read the journal, which takes place during the ten-month period before her mother’s death. Deeply moving and scattered with the teachings of Buddhism, The Whisper of the Breeze from Pine Trees and Flowing Streams uninhibitedly confronts what it means to be human in this often lonely and disconnected world.

He is also a Druid in the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, contributing regularly to the Order's monthly magazine, ""Touchstone."" The author invites you to take a stroll with him through his beloved Alps, where myths and folk customs still sing of the people who lived there in antiquity, the Celts. Walk with the author along the narrow ridge between history and otherworld, which we encounter behind many a jagged rock, in a deep forest, or dark cave. We will meet giants there, mystical ladies, and the Kasermandl; and all have fascinating stories to tell. Learn what the Alpine people of old thought about Vervain and how ancient magical spells connected folks on continent with their brethren on the British Isles. And finally, you can go with Christian Brunner on a shamanic journey to Mutter Perchtl and thus participate in the remembrance of the Great Goddess.
