Book excerpt: The presence of randomly oriented, nonspherical particles in the atmosphere results in the appearance of a depolarized component of the radar signal, that is, the echo signal. When there is sufficient radar sensitivity, this effect can be used to discriminate between the liquid phase (spherical droplets) and the crystalline phase in clouds. To realize certain theoretically observed possibilities, an apparatus was set up on the radar laboratory, which permitted the transmission of both linearly and circularly or elliptically polarized waves. Theoretical analysis and experimental measurements made with this equipment give reason to expect that polarization characteristics can be used to obtain valuable information on the structure and variation of the parameters of meteorological objects.
