Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Engineering and Economic Consideration of a Low Pressure Steam Turbine Installation Only as to the prime movers alone, but as effecting the auxiliary equipment as well. These changes have all tended toward the reduction in the size of power houses for equal capacity. Now comes the low pressure turbine and no such radical changes are necessary in order to Obtain improved results. It is not necessary to discard old apparatus or to make any great changes in the Operating conditions to take advantage of the saving Offered by the use of a low pressure turbine. The low pressure turbine does require, however, that additional Space be provided. The low pressure turbine can be used in connection with the most antiquated steam engine installation and greatly improve the economy Of the station. The low pressure turbine is therefore very attractive to central station owners as it increases the. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Combined High Pressure Reciprocating Steam Engine and Low Pressure Turbine Unit at the Plant of the Wisconsin Traction Light Heat and Power Company, Appleton, Wisconsin The exhaust steam turbine. One of the most modern of all forms of prime movers for electrical generating stations, has come into very general use within the last few years. Ite wide adoption is due to its ability to efficiently utilize the exhaust steam from compound reciprocating engines, and it is being installed in a great many places where the latter form of prime mover in used. In addition to its high efficiency. The combined unit permits the use of high preeeuree and high euperheate, since the range of steam volumes is greatly increased by the addition of the turbine in which the steam is fu11y expanded. As a result this means a low water rate per unit output. The energy available per pound of steam being greatly increased. Such an installation may be made without any material increase of floor space or pipe connections; while the output of the plant is greatly tucreaeed without scrapping any of the old machinery, or increasing the boiler room equipment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Turbine Engines, Their Construction, Care and Operation Full Instructions Regarding Correct Methods of Operating Steam Turbines, Adjusting Clearances, Etc Although the turbine principle of utilizing the heat energy in steam and converting it into useful work has been. Experimented upon for many years, it is only since the inauguration of the twentieth century that steam tur bines have been brought to the front. As efficient power producers. The piston of the reciprocating engine is driven back and forth by the static expansive force of the steam, while in the steam turbine not only the expansive force is made to do work, but a still more important element is utilized, viz., the kinetic energy, or heat energy latent in the steam, and which manifests itself in the rapid vibratory motion of the particles of steam expanding from a high, to a low pressure, and this motion the steam turbine transforms into work. It extends over the register-gate, and is fastened by set-screws to the outer chute-case. This arrangement protects the gate entirely from vertical pressure of the column of water and renders its movement very easy. This simple arrangement also greatly facil itates the erection of wheels, or obtaining access to them in case of accident, as by simply removing the set-screws the top becomes detached. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Turbines This book was prepared because the author experienced difficulty in finding a published text on Steam Turbines which was satisfactory for a short but thorough course for juniors or seniors in engineering colleges, following and applying the study of thermodynamics. Of many excellent books on the subject, the majority treat it too exhaustively for such class room use. The subject of thermodynamics is so widely taught today that it was not thought necessary to include even a brief review. A working knowledge of the ordinary steam cycles, the ability to use steam tables and charts, and familiarity with the ordinary laws of mechanics, are assumed. The opening chapter is intended to acquaint the reader with the general form and principal characteristics of a variety of turbines, and with the meanings of the various terms to be used. Thereafter attention is centered on the application of thermodynamic principles I to the calculation of the flow of steam through the nozzles and blade passages of the turbine, the changes in its heat, pressure and volume, and the various factors affecting efficiency. Many topics of interest and importance in turbine design have had to be omitted for the sake of brevity. Owing to the changes probable in steam table values on the completion of the work of the A. S. M. E. Committee on Steam Research and Extension of the Steam Tables, no tables or charts have been included, as is usual with turbine texts. Comments on the various facilities now available are made in Chapter II. Illustrative problems have been given at the end of the text, classified under chapter headings. It has been the author's experience that classes progress most rapidly if problems are assigned sparingly during the early part of the text, extensive use being made of the design problems when Chapter VII is reached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Westinghouse Turbo-Alternators: April, 1912 While the Westinghouse Machine Company commenced its turbine work under the American patents of the Honorable Charles A. Parsons, which it purchased outright, it has been no mere copyist, but has from the first worked along original and progressive lines. For example, it first demonstrated the practicability of single - cylinder units of large powers. In 1901, it built and installed for the Hartford Electric Light Power Company, Hartford, Conn., a turbine of 2000 kilowatts capacity in one cylinder. Up to that time no single cylinder turbine of larger than 500 kilowatts capacity had been built, and even with separate high and low-pressure cylinders, 1000 kilowatts was then the record size. Notwithstanding predictions of failure, this machine broke down the barriers of ultra-conservatism, and established the confidence that has made possible the mammoth engines that are in common use today. It has made the Company willing to assume the responsibility for the still larger units that are in contemplation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Turbines: A Practical and Theoretical Treatise for Engineers and Students, Including a Discussion of the Gas Turbine The steam turbine is the most modern as well as the most ancient steam motor. Recently its development has gone by leaps and bounds; and, above all, in its applications it is gaining ground daily. Doubtless it is to be the most important prime mover Of the near future. Poncelet made a solution of the Fourneyron turbine which, for its thoroughness and the direct ness of its analysis, has become classical (oomptes Renting, But that writer neglected the frictional (and other) resistances within the wheel, and assumed that the buckets, or passages in the wheel, were constantly full. The former is an important element in the theory, and its consideration makes the analysis but little more complicated. Weisbach, in his Ifydraulic Motors, gives a solution in which frictional resistances are involved, and the sections of the stream at the outlet of the supply chamber, the entrance into the wheel, and all the sections of the buckets are determined when the wheel runs for best efficiency. The formulas, however, are so complex that but little practical knowledge can be gained from their general discussion. I have, therefore, assumed that the wheels here discussed have about the proportions made for com mercial purposes, and deduced certain numerical results which are entered in tables and a simple examination of these furnishes certain desirable information. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Small Turbines for Electric Drive: A Description With Suggestions and Instructions for Their Installation, Care and Operation As in all steam turbines, the operation depends upon the expansion of steam in suitably formed nozzles so that the potential energy given up during the expansion causes the velocity of the expanded steam to increase - the velocity at the outlet from the nozzle or nozzles being such that the kinetic energy (velocity energy) is substantially equal to the energy given up during the expansion in the nozzles. After the expansion in the nozzles, and having converted the poten tial energy in the steam into kinetic energy, means must be provided for converting the energy of motion into mechanical work at the shaft. This may be done in a number of different ways, and the method employed in the small turbines under discussion depends almost wholly upon the operating condi tions, though it is also governed partly by the size of the turbine and the shaft speed. To Show more clearly the differences found in the working parts of the smaller turbines, the diagrammatic sketches Figs. I, 2, 3, 4 and 5' are presented. The principle involved in all of these is the same, differing only in degree of elaboration as higher powers and higher pressure ranges are reached. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Design and Construction of Steam Turbines: A Manual for the Engineer Mr. Alexander Richardson procured for the author complete data of important turbine tests, which have proved invaluable. TO Mr. W. Chilton and Mr. J. M. Newton, B. Se., Of the Brush Electrical Engineering Company, a special meed Of thanks is due for the results Of some Of their experiments on blading. The general scheme of this volume was decided on after much consideration, and the author finally adopted the plan of giving, without prior proof, important rules and formulas in a shape convenient for immediate practical application. The demonstrations are proceeded with later, in the belief that they will be the more readily followed by the average reader, when he has previously been impressed with the utility of the result.
