Of many excellent books on the subject, the majority treat it too exhaustively for such class room use. The subject of thermodynamics is so widely taught today that it was not thought necessary to include even a brief review. A working knowledge of the ordinary steam cycles, the ability to use steam tables and charts, and familiarity with the ordinary laws of mechanics, are assumed. The opening chapter is intended to acquaint the reader with the general form and principal characteristics of a variety of turbines, and with the meanings of the various terms to be used. Thereafter attention is centered on the application of thermodynamic principles I to the calculation of the flow of steam through the nozzles and blade passages of the turbine, the changes in its heat, pressure and volume, and the various factors affecting efficiency. Many topics of interest and importance in turbine design have had to be omitted for the sake of brevity. Owing to the changes probable in steam table values on the completion of the work of the A. S. M. E. Committee on Steam Research and Extension of the Steam Tables, no tables or charts have been included, as is usual with turbine texts. Comments on the various facilities now available are made in Chapter II. Illustrative problems have been given at the end of the text, classified under chapter headings. The former is an important element in the theory, and its consideration makes the analysis but little more complicated. Weisbach, in his Ifydraulic Motors, gives a solution in which frictional resistances are involved, and the sections of the stream at the outlet of the supply chamber, the entrance into the wheel, and all the sections of the buckets are determined when the wheel runs for best efficiency. The formulas, however, are so complex that but little practical knowledge can be gained from their general discussion. I have, therefore, assumed that the wheels here discussed have about the proportions made for com mercial purposes, and deduced certain numerical results which are entered in tables and a simple examination of these furnishes certain desirable information. After the expansion in the nozzles, and having converted the poten tial energy in the steam into kinetic energy, means must be provided for converting the energy of motion into mechanical work at the shaft. This may be done in a number of different ways, and the method employed in the small turbines under discussion depends almost wholly upon the operating condi tions, though it is also governed partly by the size of the turbine and the shaft speed.
