Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Application of Logic There is, moreover, also another broad difference between puzzled reflection and the noisier kinds of dispute; the latter are much more easily I observed in detail by a locker-ou. For that reason we Shall here keep in view controversy rather than doubt, though many of our results will be equally useful in both these branches of the application of logic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Applications of Logic: A Text-Book for College Students This book is based on ten years of class-room experience at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, first with courses in formal logic, and latterly with an attempt to adapt some of the more fundamental theories of logic to the practical aim of instruction in the expression and the criticism of thought. Such an attempt has seemed not out of place with any class of students, but particularly important in connection with the work of a technical school, the graduates of which are likely to find in their professional life more use for an orderly structure of ideas than for the niceties of expression. The purpose of the book is to treat the whole subject of logic in so far as it bears on the practical work of thinking and of expressing thought; it is intended as a text-book of applied logic, suitable for use as an introduction to the subject with college classes. To some extent, therefore, the exercises proposed take the form of work in composition; but at the same time many of them are intended rather to cultivate the critical faculty by a direct exercise of the judgment. These, too, have a bearing on expression, but their immediate effect is designed to be the ordering and control of ideas within the mind itself. The exercises in composition may be classed as elementary or advanced according to the knowledge and experience of the pupils who undertake them. They might follow a course in the elements of rhetoric; but also there is no reason why they should not precede it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Logic in Its Application to Language The title of the present work is by no means unexceptionable. So sensible, indeed, is the Author of the objections that lie against it, that he is the first to take notice of them. Instead of passing for a work upon Logic as Ap plied to the Study of Language, the following pages should be considered as an exposition of that amount of Grammar and Philology which applies to Logic. In other words, the view suggested by the term should be reversed. The Language should lead to the Logic, and not the Logic to the Language. The true relations of the two subjects to each other make a certain amount of the. One a preliminary or introduction to the other. This preliminary, however, lies in the phenomena of Speech. These lead to Logic, but not vice cared. Why, then, does the present treatise give us, as far, at least, as its title goes, precisely the reverse of this doctrine? Why does it treat Logic as the pre liminary and Language as the subject to which it conducts us? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Logic With the author's manuscript and printed copy before me, my own work as editor has consisted chiefly in selecting the material and seeing it through the press. Some omitted references have been sup plied; a few slips of the pen or the press, formerly overlooked, have been corrected; unwieldy paragraphs have been broken up, and the punctuation has been simplified; but nothing new has been added to text or notes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction to the Study of Logic This is only another way Of putting the Scholastic division of Logic into Formal and Material; Formal Logic or Dialectics answering to the act Of the agent (see definitions at p. 10, et seq., referred to at p. 17) Material Logic, to the end Of the act. And, as Truth is something else besides the end Of the act Of reasoning, as it can be gained in other ways, and is manifested bylaws outside our minds, -and as Material Logic has Truth for its matter, it follows that these laws must fall within the scope Of this Material Logic. In this division a knowledge Of the agent of the act is presupposed. A distinction is Often made between Natural and Artificial Logic, Natural Logic means the natural reasoning that leads men to Truth, or that would do so, if it were possible for them always to follow the light Of reason. Artificial Logic may be briefly called the science of Natural Logic, for it does no more than give an exact and methodical Shape to the rules delivered by nature; just as in music, or painting, or sculpture, the technicalities Of the art merely throw natural rules into order and method. And, as the art-student naturally acquires delicacy Of perception in all that concerns his art; so does the study Of Logic give delicacy Of intellectual touch to distinguish Truth, and a peculiar power Of dis cerning Truth, and Of unmasking error when it lurks under the guise Of Truth. Book excerpt: In writing this book, our goal was to produce a text suitable for a first course in mathematical logic more attuned than the traditional textbooks to the recent dramatic growth in the applications of logic to computer science. Thus our choice of topics has been heavily influenced by such applications. Of course, we cover the basic traditional topics - syntax, semantics, soundness, completeness and compactness - as well as a few more advanced results such as the theorems of Skolem-Lowenheim and Herbrand. Much of our book, however, deals with other less traditional topics. Resolution theorem proving plays a major role in our treatment of logic, especially in its application to Logic Programming and PROLOG. We deal extensively with the mathematical foundations of all three of these subjects. In addition, we include two chapters on nonclassical logic- modal and intuitionistic - that are becoming increasingly important in computer science. We develop the basic material on the syntax and se mantics (via Kripke frames) for each of these logics. In both cases, our approach to formal proofs, soundness and completeness uses modifications of the same tableau method introduced for classical logic. We indicate how it can easily be adapted to various other special types of modal log ics. A number of more advanced topics (including nonmonotonic logic) are also briefly introduced both in the nonclassical logic chapters and in the material on Logic Programming and PROLOG.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in Logic The recent developments in logical theory fol lowing upon the contributions of Boole, Pierce, and Schroder have seemed to place the subject be yond the reach of the average student and even in most instances beyond the reach of the technically equipped philosopher. The result has been to re duce the attention that was formerly given to ele mentary instruction in logic and to displace the traditional course from its originally dominant posi tion in the university curriculum. The conviction is abroad that the ancient organon is so far inferior to the modern instrument perfected by the critical labors of Peano, Frege, Russell, and others, that it no longer deserves the attention once bestowed upon it. These objections the writer has endeavored to meet, in the first instance by introducing no symbols whatever, save the ones employed by traditional logic itself, so that the treatment may be followed by any intelligent reader, and secondly by keeping modern developments always in mind while following the traditional order of treatment. Finally, he has met the recent contention that the classical system does not hold true in all of its parts, by showing in the last chapter of this work that.
