Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles of the South East Were of the working class, albeit the majority of them worked far less than they loafed about the 'jack-o' Newbury just round the corner. It was a semi nautical neighbourhood. From the roofs of any of me houses the mastsofthe ships inthe.s. ey Commercial Docks might be seen, and a' very itt walk (it you knew your way) would bring you to the riverside, whence, unless you were an eager student or waterside squalor, you would lose no time in departing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apostles As regards the date of Ads, Renan, proceeding on the assumption of Luke's authorship, tentatively assigns it to about the year 80; but Schmiedel Offers the choice of two later dates. The diver gence between the third Gospel and the Ads in the matter of the Ascension of Jesus - which in the Gospel takes place on the evening of the Resurrection, in Ads forty days later - indicates that the Gospel was the earlier writing; for the lengthened sojourn on earth argues a significant development of the idea already at work in the third Gospel, that, before his Ascension, Jesus must have continued on earth to have intercourse with his disciples and instruct them.3 The date of the third Gospel is gener ally put after 70, so Ads must have been written some years later, the surest datum being the author's ac quaintance with the works of Josephus, whopublishednothingbefore 79. Finally, Schmiedel concludes that Ads must be placed somewhere between 105 and 130, or, if the third Gospel already pre suppose acquaintance with all the writ ings Of Josephus, between 110 and 130. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Peter: The Apostle of Asia Born in Syria, spending his early manhood in Galilee, his maturer life in and near J eru salem, and his declining years in countries bor dering the Black Sea, the Apostle Peter should be known in history only by the title of apostle TO asia. Tradition has cast such a glamour over his ministry, that his name in our day is associated mainly with Rome and the Romans. By reason of this strange transplanting of facts from the East to the West, great diversities have arisen among christian communities, and the future will be a repetition of the past, unless coming generations are willing to turn the search-lights of truth squarely upon the impor tant events that transpired between the years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Apostles Such is the scope of this second book which we have called The Apostles, because it is devoted to that period Of common action, during which the little family cre ated by Jesus acted in concert and was grouped mo rally around a single point - Jerusalem. Our next and third book, will lead us out of this company, and will have for almost its only character the man who, more than any other, represents conquering and spreading Christianity - St. Paul. Although from a certain epoch he may be called an apostle, Paul, nevertheless, was not so by the same title as the Twelve 1 he was, in fact, a laborer of the second hour, and almost an intruder. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scenes in the Lives of the Apostles Commencing with the Ministry of John the Baptist and Forerunner, this volume illustrates some of the most striking incidents in the Lives of the Apostles, as Disciples of John and of Jesus, and then as his Ministers and Witnesses. No other restriction has been placed upon the choice of themes, than the avoidance, as far as possible, of those illustrated in the Scenes in the Life of the Saviour, that this book may be at once a companion for that, and still complete in itself. But, God be thanked, the complaints as to the prevailing Spirit of theology and exegesis which I then expressed cannot now be so forcibly repeated. Since then, much has been done in attaining to a greater progress in the devout and believing comprehension of Holy Scripture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lives of the Apostles of Jesus Christ The materials of this work should be found in all that has been written on the subject of the New Testament history, since the scriptural canon was completed. But who is sufficient for these things 2 A long life might find abundant employment in searching a thousand libraries, and in com iling from a hundred thousand volumes, the facts and illustrations of this immense an noble subject; and then the best energies of another long life would be needed to bring the mighty masses into form, and give them in a narrative for the mind of the unlearned. What, then, is here attempted, as a substitute for this immensily 2 To give a clear, distinct, narrative Of each apostle's life, with such illustrations of the character of the era and the scene in which the inci dents occurred, and such explanations of the terms in which they are recorded, as may, consistently with the limits of this book, be drawn from those works of the learned of ancient and modern times, which are within the writer's reach. Various and nume rous are the books that swell the list of faithful and honest references many and weighty the volumes that have been turned over, in the long course of research; ancient and venerable the dust, which has been shaken into suffocating clouds about the searcher's head, and has obscured his vision, as he dragged many a forgotten folio from the slum ber of ages, to furnish the modern compiler with the rich productions Of antique lore. Histories, travels, geographies, maps, commentaries, criticisms, introductions, and lexicons, have been daily and nightly turned in the hand; and of this labor some fruit is Offered on every page. But the unstained source of sacred history! The pure well - spring, at which the wearied searcher always refreshed himself, after unrequited toils through dry masses of erudition, was the simple story of the Apostles and Evangelists, told by themselves. In this same simple story, indeed, were found the points on which the longest labor was required; yet these, at best only illustrated, not improved, by all the labors of the learned of various ages, were the materials of the work. These were the preparations of months and years; the execution must decide on their real value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Prince of the Apostles: A Study The present study still further assumes that the Church of Rome which is at once the largest and most famous church' in Christendom, a church so constituted that it cannot formally change, and so closely related to the English people as to be the mother of their Christianity, has a first claim upon the consideration of all Christians, and more particularly of ourselves. In regard to our divisions, we should be amaz ed and shocked by them, were it not for the dead weight of custom; and no theory Of unity that the wit Of man can devise will serve to excuse them, or to explain them away.
