Book excerpt: "The increased demand for protective coatings on metals and for non-corrosive alloys has stimulated extensive research on the fundamental behavior of metals in corrosive media. One of the problems still unsolved is the nature of the mechanism of the anodic dissolution of metals like beryllium, zinc, magnesium, cadmium, tin, aluminum, iron in aqueous salt solutions. It has been reported in the literature that these metals show discrepancies which often arise between coulometric data and the weight loss of metal electrodes in various media. Several investigators have proposed different and opposing theories to explain the above deviation. The purpose of the present investigation was to obtain experimental data for the anodic dissolution of tin in various electrolytes using liquid tin-amalgam and solid tin as an anode, and also to study the phenomena of disintegration for this particular metal"--Introduction, leaves 1-2.

That may well be the first impression of the Group 13 elements. The chemical literature fosters the impression not only in the primary journals, but also in asteady outflowofbooks focussing more or less closely on boron and its compounds. The same preoccupation with boron is apparent in the coverage received by the Group 13 elements in the comprehensive and regularly updated volume of the Gmelin Handbook. Yet such an imbalance cannot be explained by any inherent lack ofvariety, interest or consequence in the 'heavier elements. Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust; in the industrialised world the metal is second only to iron in its usage, and its compounds can justifiably be said to touch our lives daily - to the potential detriment of those and other lives, some would argue. From being chemical curios, gallium and indium have now gained considerably prominence as sources of compound semiconductors like gallium arsenide and indium antimonide. Nor is there any want ofincident in the chemistriesofthe heavier Group 13 elements. In their redox, coordination and structural properties, there is to be found music indeed, notable not always for its harmony but invariably for its richness and variety. Thisbook seeks to redress the balance with a definitive, wide-rangingand up-to-date review of the chemistry of the Group 13 metals aluminium, gallium, indium and thallium.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gallium dissolves very slowly in diluted acids like HCl, H2SO4 and HClO4. T rate can be sub stantially accelerated if the metal is connected with a Pt electrode in the same solution. From the volume of the hydrogen developed the trival ency of Ga ions going into solution can be cal culated. The same ionic charge is obtained from coulometric measurements using Ga amalgam as an anode. Ga disintegrates partially while it is going anodically into solution. The diameter of the smallest observable Ga particles is below 7 x 10 to the -5th power mm in diameter. If the solution is not cooled the formation of larg er metallic spheres is observed. Disintegration explains the deviation from Faraday's law and the presence of the small particles - the reducing ability of the electrolyte. The postulation of Ga ions of lower valency is not necessary and their presence can not be proved. (Author).

Disintegration of Al also takes place while reacting with H2O in presence of Hg.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growth and development witnessed today in modern science, engineering, and technology owes a heavy debt to the rare, refractory, and reactive metals group, of which niobium is a member. Extractive Metallurgy of Niobium presents a vivid account of the metal through its comprehensive discussions of properties and applications, resources and resource processing, chemical processing and compound preparation, metal extraction, and refining and consolidation. Typical flow sheets adopted in some leading niobium-producing countries for the beneficiation of various niobium sources are presented, and various chemical processes for producing pure forms of niobium intermediates such as chloride, fluoride, and oxide are discussed. The book also explains how to liberate the metal from its intermediates and describes the physico-chemical principles involved. It is an excellent reference for chemical metallurgists, hydrometallurgists, extraction and process metallurgists, and minerals processors. It is also valuable to a wide variety of scientists, engineers, technologists, and students interested in the topic.

Book excerpt: The author provides a unified account of the electrochemical material science of metal chalcogenide (MCh) compounds and alloys with regard to their synthesis, processing and applications. Starting with the chemical fundamentals of the chalcogens and their major compounds, the initial part of the book includes a systematic description of the MCh solids on the basis of the Periodic Table in terms of their structures and key properties. This is followed by a general discussion on the electrochemistry of chalcogen species, and the principles underlying the electrochemical formation of inorganic compounds/alloys. The core of the book offers an insight into available experimental results and inferences regarding the electrochemical preparation and microstructural control of conventional and novel MCh structures. It also aims to survey their photoelectrochemistry, both from a material-oriented point of view and as connected to specific processes such as photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. Finally, the book illustrates the relevance of MCh materials to various applications of electrochemical interest such as (electro)catalysis in fuel cells, energy storage with intercalation electrodes, and ion sensing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book to cover developments in corrosion inhibitors is long overdue. This has been addressed by Dr Sastri in a book which presents fundamental aspects of corrosion inhibition, historical developments and the industrial applications of inhibitors. The book deals with the electrochemical principles and chemical aspects of corrosion inhibition, such as stability of metal complexes, the Hammett equation, hard and soft acid and base principle, quantum chemical aspects and Hansch' s model and also with the various surface analysis techniques, e.g. XPS, Auger, SIMS and Raman spectroscopy, that are used in industry for corrosion inhibition. The applications of corrosion inhibition are wide ranging. Examples given in this book include: oil and gas wells, petrochemical plants, steel reinforced cement, water cooling systems, and many more. The final chapters discuss economic and environmental considerations which are now of prime importance. The book is written for researchers in academia and industry, practicing corrosion engineers and students of materials science, engineering and applied chemistry.
