Book Synopsis Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates by : Grethe R. Hasle
Download or read book Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates written by Grethe R. Hasle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-01-25 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates is the second identification manual created from the literature developed for the Advanced International Phytoplankton Course. This version, enlarged and modified from the earlier literature, deals with the identification of marine diatoms and dinoflagellates. The data and references presented here should allow the researcher to pursue the question of valid species and how they can be verified. This volume comprises three chapters, beginning with an introductory chapter discussing the subject's historical background. The next chapter focuses on marine diatoms, providing an introduction that describes their general characteristics, life cycles, morphology and terminology, and classification. It is followed by a discussion of genera represented in marine plankton, a description of taxa, and methodology. The third and final chapter focuses on dinoflagellates, beginning with an introduction that describes their general characteristics and eukaryotic unicells. The discussion continues with terminology and morphology, identification of species, techniques for preparation of dinoflagellates for identification, common dinoflagellate synonyms, and an index of dinoflagellate taxa. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biology, zoology, and environmental protection.
Book Synopsis Arctic-Subarctic Ocean Fluxes by : Robert R. Dickson
Download or read book Arctic-Subarctic Ocean Fluxes written by Robert R. Dickson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-03-03 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are only now beginning to understand the climatic impact of the remarkable events that are now occurring in subarctic waters. Researchers, however, have yet to agree upon a predictive model that links change in our northern seas to climate. This volume brings together the body of evidence needed to develop climate models that quantify the ocean exchanges through subarctic seas, measure their variability, and gauge their impact on climate.

Book Synopsis Mesoscale Spatial and Temporal Variations of Water Mass Characteristics in the California Current Region Off Monterey Bay in 1973-1974 by : Richard Edward Blumberg
Download or read book Mesoscale Spatial and Temporal Variations of Water Mass Characteristics in the California Current Region Off Monterey Bay in 1973-1974 written by Richard Edward Blumberg and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuous salinity and/or temperature profiles were made off the coast of Monterey Bay monthly between August 1973 and August 1974 and on a spatial grid finer than is conventionally used. A procedure is described to convert the data from analog to digital form, process these data on an IBM 360 computer, and print out the results by station for each month. The results show water mass features of small spatial scale detectable only because of the small grid spacing. A gyre or filament structure is suggested by the north to south variation between lines of stations. The extent of the area of the survey is insufficient to describe completely the water mass structure on both the eastern and western boundaries; however, the temporal variation in the observed water mass structure is consistent with the three oceanographic seasons described for the California Current system. Elements of relatively cold water and relatively warm water masses are identified in the area of survey. (Author).
