Book Synopsis Roman and Civil Law and the Development of Anglo-American Jurisprudence in the Nineteenth Century by : Michael H. Hoeflich
Download or read book Roman and Civil Law and the Development of Anglo-American Jurisprudence in the Nineteenth Century written by Michael H. Hoeflich and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking to fill a gap in our knowledge of the legal history of the nineteenth century, this volume studies the influence of Roman and civil law upon the development of common law jurisdictions in the United States and in Great Britain. M. H. Hoeflich examines the writings of a variety of prominent Anglo-American legal theorists to show how Roman and civil law helped common law thinkers develop their own theories. Intellectual leaders in law in the United States and Great Britain used Roman and civil law in different ways at different times. The views of these lawyers were greatly respected even by nonlawyers, and most of them wrote to influence a wider public. By filling in the gaps in the history of jurisprudence, this volume also provides greater understanding of the development of Anglo-American culture and society.

Book Synopsis Tejano Legacy by : Armando C. Alonzo
Download or read book Tejano Legacy written by Armando C. Alonzo and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pathbreaking study of Tejano ranchers and settlers in the Lower Río Grande Valley from their colonial roots to 1900. The first book to delineate and assess the complexity of Mexican-Anglo interaction in south Texas, it also shows how Tejanos continued to play a leading role in the commercialization of ranching after 1848 and how they maintained a sense of community. Despite shifts in jurisdiction, the tradition of Tejano land holding acted as a stabilizing element and formed an important part of Tejano history and identity. The earliest settlers arrived in the 1730s and established numerous ranchos and six towns along the river. Through a careful study of land and tax records, brands and bills of sale of livestock, wills, population and agricultural censuses, and oral histories, Alonzo shows how Tejanos adapted to change and maintained control of their ranchos through the 1880s, when Anglo encroachment and changing social and economic conditions eroded most of the community's land base.
Book Synopsis The Anglo-Florentines by : Diana Webb
Download or read book The Anglo-Florentines written by Diana Webb and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-26 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the variety of Britons who became residents of Florence between the end of the Napoleonic wars and the absorption of Tuscany into the kingdom of Italy. Many of them were leisured, and some aristocratic; a few were writers or artists; the British clergy and physicians who ministered to them were gentlemen. Many others were shopkeepers, merchants and even engineers. Some achieved a more profound knowledge of the country (and its language) than others, but all were affected to some degree by the momentous events which led to Italian unification.
Book Synopsis The Transatlantic Genealogy of American Anglo-Saxonism by : Michael Modarelli
Download or read book The Transatlantic Genealogy of American Anglo-Saxonism written by Michael Modarelli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-17 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the myth of Anglo-Saxonism as it crosses from Britain to the New World as both a cultural construct and ideological nation-building tool. Through extensive investigations of both early American and English cultural attitudes toward Anglo-Saxonism and similar texts, the book advances the claim that the ways in which Anglo-Saxon authors envisioned history as unfolding becomes an important ideological model for later New World conceptions of historical and national identity. From this beginning, the book follows the influence of this adopted American Anglo-Saxonism in early American literature and the socio-cultural implications that follow upon this influence.
Book Synopsis Anglo-America and its Discontents by : Peter J. Katzenstein
Download or read book Anglo-America and its Discontents written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-America is a clearly identifiable part of what is commonly referred to as the West. The West exists, this book argues, in the form of multiple traditions that have currency in America, Europe, the Americas, and a few outposts in the Southern hemisphere. Led by the British Empire until the beginning and by the United States since the middle of the twentieth century, Anglo-America has been at the very centre of world politics. Bridging the European and the American West, Anglo-America is distinctive, not unique. These multiple Wests coexist with each other and with other civilizations, as parts of one global civilization containing multiple modernities. And like all other civilizations, Anglo-America is marked by multiple traditions and internal pluralism. Once deeply held notions and practices of imperial rule and racial hierarchy now take the form of hegemony or multilateralism and politically contested versions of multiculturalism. At its core Anglo-America is fluid, not fixed. The analytical perspectives of this book are laid out in Katzenstein’s opening and concluding chapters. They are explored in seven outstanding case studies, written by widely known authors, which combine historical and contemporary perspectives. Featuring an exceptional line-up and representing a diversity of theoretical views within one integrative perspective, this work will be of interest to all scholars and students of international relations, sociology and political science.
