This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Church and the Reformation This movement had been very greatly accelerated by the mortal struggle with feudalism which had occupied such a large part of the fifteenth century. In France and England the dis integrating force of an increasingly powerful semi-independent feudal aristocracy had succumbed to a new and more powerful monarchy personifying national unity and consolidation. The practical anarchy entailed by a disastrous period of civil war led Englishmen to welcome the prospect of settled order and peace under the absolute rule of a new monarchy. Thus the termina tion of the Wars Of the Roses with the battle of Bosworth Field enabled the Tudors to build up a strong and despotic government on the ruins of the old feudal nobility. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reformers; And the Theology of the Reformation IN introducing the present volume to the Public, the Editors feel that a few words of explanation may be desirable, in regard to the trust assigned to them, and the manner in which they have, in so far, attempted to discharge it. In the interview which, at Dr Cunningham's request, they had with him within a few hours of his death, he committed to them the charge of his whole writings and manuscripts connected with the College, to be deposited in the Library, and to be used and applied to any purpose they judged right; stating, that he gave them absolute power to do in the matter as they considered to be best for his character, and the good of the Church. The charge thus verbally intrusted to them was formally and legally confirmed by the Trustees acting under Dr Cunningham's settlement; so that the Editors became invested with the character of his Literary Executors, and with the full powers and responsibilities attaching to such an office. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ballads of the English Reformation Of the five ballads contained in the following pages, those of John Brown's martyrdom and Hugh Latimer are the only ones in which I have taken leave to draw upon my imagination. The others are simply versified history. And in the case of the two where I have employed a certain amount of fiction, I have followed, nevertheless, the facts of history so far as they go, as the, reader may see by referring to the Notes. I would bespeak an indulgent criticism for these verses, on the plea that a writer of ballads is not bound to achieve a high poetic flight. I conceive that the cadence of metre will of itself do something to heighten the effect of a striking narrative; and that, for this reason alone, it is worth while to versify a tale which one would have to abide in the memory and heart of the reader.
