Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Wilfred Grenfell, physician and folk hero, recruited thousands of volunteer workers for his Newfoundland and Labrador seamen's mission, many of them Americans from Ivy League institutions. As the medical mission grew to become the International Grenfell Association, establishing institutions along the Labrador and northern Newfoundland coasts, Americans also became resident staff leaders in the region, and Grenfell himself married an American, Anne MacClanahan, who led mission activities. The Grenfell Medical Mission and American Support in Newfoundland and Labrador, 1890s-1940s reveals the nature and extent of support from Americans throughout the distributed privately run social enterprise until the 1940s, before the region joined Canada. Essays explore the organization's claims to share an Anglo-Saxon heritage with the United States, American reaction to its financial scandal and creation of an incorporated association, its promotion of sport and masculinity, and the development of education and schools in the region and the mission. The organization's strong ties to the United States are exemplified by Grenfell's friendship with American physician John Harvey Kellogg; the donation of clothing from American donors; the work of one American woman on her affiliated mission unit; the impact of American philanthropy and training on the construction of the mission's main hospital in St Anthony; and the superior American-accredited health care facilities and their clinical achievements. From its corporate base in New York City, the International Grenfell Association blended contemporary social movements and adopted American notions of philanthropy. The Grenfell Medical Mission and American Support in Newfoundland and Labrador, 1890s-1940s offers the first thorough history of an iconic health and social organization in Atlantic Canada.
Book Synopsis The Circumcised Heart by : Marilyn O. Flower
Download or read book The Circumcised Heart written by Marilyn O. Flower and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2016-10-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Circumcised Heart: Ready, Imperfect, Softened, Transparent is based on the authors life and describes how biblical literacy transformed her heart and led to a much stronger and deeper relationship with God. Specific personal memoirs which describe how God worked in her life drawing her closer to him as she became more dependent upon him portray steady character growth. Angry with God because he had not answered her prayers at times as she wished, she was unable to deny him or remain angry, because he was so active in her life, revealing himself miraculously and mysteriously at times. Through his perfect love and the Bible, God showed her how a relationship with him lasts a lifetime and is for eternity. God used the authors heartache to drive her to seek him and through everyday occurrences made himself visible and ever-present, so that now she relies constantly on him, his Word, and the Holy Spirit for comfort, protection, and guidance.

Book Synopsis Commerce of Taste by : Barry Magrill
Download or read book Commerce of Taste written by Barry Magrill and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-04-24 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late-nineteenth century the circulation of pattern books featuring medieval church architecture in England facilitated an unprecedented spread of Gothic revival churches in Canada. Engaging several themes around the spread of print culture, religion, and settlement, A Commerce of Taste details the business of church building. Drawing upon formal architectural analysis and cultural theory, Barry Magrill shows how pattern books offer a unique way of studying the relationships between taste, ideology, privilege, social change, and economics. Taste was a concept used to legitimize British - and to an extent Anglican - privilege, while other denominations resisted their aesthetic edicts. Pattern books eventually lost control of the exclusivity associated with taste as advances in printing technology and transatlantic shipping brought more books into the marketplace and readerships expanded beyond the professional classes. By the early twentieth century taste had become diluted, the architect had lost his heroic status, and architectural distinctions among denominations were less apparent. Drawing together the history of church building and the broader patterns of Canadian social and historical development, A Commerce of Taste presents an alternative perspective on the spread of religious monuments in Canada by looking squarely at pattern books as sources of social conflict around the issue of taste.

Book Synopsis Anglicans in Canada by : Alan L. Hayes
Download or read book Anglicans in Canada written by Alan L. Hayes and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first worship services onboard English ships during the sixteenth century to the contentious toughmindedness of early clergymen to current debates about sexuality, Alan L. Hayes provides a comprehensive survey of the history of the Canadian Anglican Church. Unprecedented in the annals of Canadian religious history, it examines whether something like an Anglican identity emerged from within the changing forms of doctrine, worship, ministry, and institutions. With writing that conveys a strong sense of place and people, Hayes ultimately finds such an identity not in the relatively few agreements within Anglicanism but within the disagreements themselves. Including hard-to-find historical documents, Anglicans in Canada is ideal for research, classroom use, and as a resource for church groups.

Book Synopsis Unexpected Encounters by : J. Berkley Reynolds
Download or read book Unexpected Encounters written by J. Berkley Reynolds and published by Word Alive Press. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a marked contrast from serving as a padre in the Canadian Army to being posted to Change Islands in the North Atlantic. My new mode of transportation couldn’t be more different from an army jeep—a thirty-eight-foot sea-faring vessel. The M.V. Messenger was to be my ocean home, but it would have been my coffin were it not for my faithful Samoyed dog, Sabre. Taking the “Good News” to the remote communities of Northern Newfoundland wasn’t without risks. Navigating through the ice floe, walking over the frozen bay, or flying with the bush pilots had its challenges. But one did not count the cost when on a divine mission. My calling was to minister to the families of fishermen and loggers nestled in the coves and bays. It was far different from my ministry in a suburban church in Metro Toronto, where the storms were of a different nature. Victor Frankel, a psychiatrist and survivor of the Auschwitz concentration camp, affirmed that a person’s greatest search is for meaning. I have shown that life’s greatest and most difficult experiences can be overcome by trust in God’s faithful promises found in scripture. Is that a place where you might begin your search?
