Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of Society, Vol. 1 It will quickly be perceived that a part only of the original design has been filled up in these volumes. Society is, as it were, a vast continent, over which we must travel long and far, before we can paint its aspect, or exactly determine its configuration. Of this extensive and varied region, which has already occupied so many superior observers, and furnished materials for so infinite a variety of sublime or beautiful pictures, I have hitherto examined but a portion; but such opportunities for observation as have been afforded me by Providence, I have endeavoured to turn to advantage; perusing mankind with a kindly spirit, no less desirous of strengthening and extending my sympathies, than of purifying and enlarging the number of my ideas. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anatomy of Society As it has been the grim privilege of those who have eyes to see to behold human life flayed by the tragedy of the European War of 1914-18, it is no less than their duty to set down what they have seen for those who shall come after them, that they may provide for their tragedies not to be as futile and sterile as this has been. Properly instructed, they should be able to protect themselves against the operation of theories so antiquated that they have lost all relation to the common practice of human existence. W'hile chained together to form the various paths of conduction. They are probably seldom, if ever, actually united to one another but only intimately related, since their processes, although in close contact, are not directly continuous, - contiguity but not continuity being' the ordinary relation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Sociology, Vol. 2 For deciding to issue by itself, this and each succeeding division of Vol. II of the Principles of Sociology, I have found several reasons. One is that each division, though related to the rest, nevertheless forms a whole so far distinct, that it may be fairly well understood without the rest. Another is that large volumes (and Vol. II threatens to exceed in bulk Vol. I) are alarming; and that many who are deterred by their size from reading them, will not fear to undertake separately the parts of which they are composed. A third and chief reason is that post ponement of issue until completion of the entire volume, necessitates an undesirable delay in the issue of its earlier divisions: substantially-inde pen dent works being thus kept in manuscript much longer than need be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Society in America, Vol. 2 of 3 While we were at Detroit, we were most strongly urged to return thither by the Lakes, instead of by either of the Michigan roads. From place to place, in my previous travelling, I had been told of the charms of the Lakes, and especially of the Island of Mackinaw. Every officer's lady who has been in garrison there, is eloquent upon the delights of Mackinaw. As our whole party, however, could not spare time to make so wide a circuit, we had not intended to indulge ourselves with a further variation in our travels than to take the upper road back to Detroit; having left it by the lower. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs, Vol. 2: Read Before the Anthropological Society of London, 1865-6 IN prosecuting some recent researches into the minute anatomy of the human larynx, my Observations were extended to an examination of that part of the organism in the Negro. I had already made myself familiar with the elements, entering into the formation of the same part in white people, by the dissection of many hundred larynges, and was therefore pre pared to note any deviation that might present itself in the coloured race. In prosecuting this inquiry, no difference was anticipated by me beforehand between the larynx of white and black people; more especially as some years back my dissections had included a considerable number of those from the black race; and at that time whatever peculiarities may have been noticed, they were not then considered of such im portance as to attract the attention of scientific men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from d104-Book of Comparative Anatomy, Vol. 2 The fact that this second volume of the translation appears four years after the first is due partly to the delay in the issue of the third and fourth German parts of which it is composed, and partly to the increased difficulty in the work of translation. A comparison of the two volumes will show at a glance that the work has developed under the hands of the author: the treatment has become more elaborate. The two "chapters" which practically fill this volume are in reality more like comprehensive treatises on the groups with which they deal, and as such could only be adequately translated from the German by some one with a very special knowledge of both groups. There are probably few zoologists who have attempted to make a special study of two such heterogeneous phyla as the Mollusca and the Echinodermata. In addition, therefore, to frequent references to the original literature and to constant applications to kind friends, the whole of the text relating to the two chief groups was submitted to specialists for revision. The translators beg to tender their warmest thanks to their friends who kindly undertook this laborious task. Mr. B. B. Woodward read the text of the chapter dealing with the Mollusca, revising the terminology, and suggesting slight alterations, which have been either adopted without comment in the text or else placed in short footnotes. Mr. W. Percy Sladen and Mr. F. A. Bather revised the text dealing with the Echinodermata, each with special reference to the group with which his name is most associated. Thanks are also due to Professor Jeffery Bell for his kind assistance in the solution of difficulties. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
