Book excerpt: Palms are an economically important group of plants and support major agronomic and horticultural industries, quite apart from their regional use in the cultures of many tropical countries as sources of food, fibre, and building materials. They range widely in size, life form, and habitat. This book provides a survey of the structure and vegetative anatomy of members of the palm family (Arecaceae or Palmae) and uses the most recent molecular phylogenetic treatment of the family as the basis for interpreting the systematic and ecological significance of anatomical characters.

Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of research done in the past 30 years on the anatomy and morphology of palms, presenting an integrated view of this highly distinctive plant form. The work goes beyond simple description to show the interrelationships between functional processes that are usually treated independently. Functional morphology and development are emphasized and each organ of the plant is examined. Readers will find a comprehensive, systematic picture of how the palm "works" through the volume's in-depth examination of the plant's life cycle, as well as convenient summaries of recent literature on palm biology, and discussion of the palm's relationship to other flowering plants.

Book Synopsis Palms of controversies by : Alain Rival
Download or read book Palms of controversies written by Alain Rival and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2014-07-17 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid development of oil palm cultivation feeds many social issues such as biodiversity, deforestation, food habits or ethical investments. How can this palm be viewed as a miracle plant by both the agro-food industry in the North and farmers in the tropical zone, but a serious ecological threat by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for the environment or rights of local indigenous peoples? In the present book the authors – a biologist and an agricultural economist- describe a global and complex tropical sector, for which the interests of the many different stakeholders are often antagonistic. Oil palm has become emblematic of recent changes in North-South relationship in agricultural development. Indeed, palm oil is produced and consumed in the South; its trade is driven by emerging countries, although the major part of its transformations is made in the North that still hosts the largest multinational agro industries. It is also in the North that the sector is challenged on ethical and environmental issues. Public controversy over palm oil is often opinionated and it is fed by definitive and sometimes exaggerated statements. Researchers are conveying a more nuanced speech, which is supported by scientific data and a shared field experience. Their work helps in building a more balanced view, moving attention to the South, the region of exclusive production and major consumption of palm oil.

Book Synopsis Compendium of Ornamental Palm Diseases and Disorders by : Monica L. Elliott
Download or read book Compendium of Ornamental Palm Diseases and Disorders written by Monica L. Elliott and published by American Phytopathological Society. This book was released on 2004 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Compendium of Ornamental Palm Diseases and Disorders provides current information on diseases and disorders affecting palms during nursery production and later in the landscape. With the help of 237 color images, detailed descriptions, and treatment methods, readers will learn to visually identify and treat diseases and disorders that affect the health and beauty of these important ornamental plants. Palms lose their beauty, and sometimes die, for numerous reasons - not all caused by diseases. The goal of this work is to help readers separate, for example, leaf spots caused by a disease vs. leaf spots caused by a nutritional deficiency; death caused by a bud rot vs. death caused by lightning; or leaf shredding caused by a disease vs. leaf shredding caused by wind. The ability to determine the cause is critical to selecting successful control measures, which can vastly vary. New to the Compendium of Plant Disease Series, this is a thorough revision of a bestselling palm disease guide first published in 1991 by APS PRESS. This ambitious new treatment of an economically important host is presented in the popular APS Compendium format with new high quality photographs, up-to-date diagnostic and treatment information, and references provided for each topic. An introduction on palm morphology and biology are added in addition to new diseases and enhanced detail. Readers will find data on distribution of pathogens within the United States and worldwide, descriptions of laboratory techniques including information on pathogen isolation and maintenance techniques, a list of potential hosts for each pathogen, and step-by-step treatment methods for diseases and disorders. This book is applicable to any geographic location where palms are grown, whether indoors or outdoors, and will be valuable for a wide range of readers, including nursery growers, extension professionals, plant pathologists, horticulturists, landscape professionals, diagnosticians, arborists, landscape consultants, landscape architects, botanical garden professionals, palm researchers, and palm hobbyists.
