Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of religious fundamentalism in different parts of the world in recent years and its association with terrorism has led to renewed interest in the nature of religion and its compatibility with Western institutions. Much of the focus of this new interest has contrasted religion and science as systems of knowledge. This book also emphasizes the difference between religion and science as means for understanding causal relationships, but it focuses much more heavily on the challenge religious extremism poses for liberal democratic institutions. The treatment contains a discussion of human psychology, describes the salient characteristics of all religions, and contrasts religion and science as systems of thought. Historical sketches are used to establish a link between modernity and the use of the human capacity for reasoning to advance human welfare. The book describes the conditions under which democratic institutions can advance human welfare, and the nature of constitutional rights as protectors of individual freedoms. Extremist religions are shown to pose a threat to liberal democracy, a threat that has implications for immigration and education policies and the definition of citizenship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Embattled America' is a reinterpretation of conservative evangelical persecution claims. The centrality of such claims to American life is widely known. This book, however, argues against standard approaches to them. It interprets a range of controversial subjects and persons surrounding embattled religion, from the Obama-to-Trump era: Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, Wallbuilders, anti-sharia legislation and birthers. The lesson of each episode is linked not to any iteration of religion but to a democratic fundament that is obscured in the obsession with controversial religion.--

Book excerpt: Naveh (American history, Tel Aviv U.) applies a religious concept of martyrdom to the context of American political culture and examines the ways in which Americans have depicted certain individuals as national martyrs. She argues that only Martin Luther King Jr. among modern leaders has the potential to turn into a national martyr legend like John Brown or Abraham Lincoln. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gary Chartier (author of Anarchy and Legal Order: Law and Politics for a Stateless Society) writes the foreword and states: “Anarchists frequently view religion as exemplifying or sustaining arbitrary authority. Consider Mikhail Bakunin's God and the State, suggesting that subservience to the state is disturbingly similar to religious belief, and Daniel Guerin's No Gods, No Masters, effectively treating religious and socio-political authority as coordinate. When religious institutions are intertwined with a society's power structure, just as when those institutions reinforce submissiveness to authority by denigrating or otherwise resisting critical thinking, it's easy to see why they might be seen as anarchism's enemies. But it is also surely crucial to recognize alternative strands in the history of multiple religious traditions. In the Abrahamic traditions, which I know best, it is clear, for instance, that belief in divine transcendence has undermined the idolization of political authority; that belief in individual access to God and to divine truth has strengthened belief in the capacity of ordinary people to make their own political decisions; and that Jesus' praise of peace has inspired rejection of state-made wars and the search for a truly consensual society. Religion and authoritarianism may sometimes be allies, but the story is too mixed to make it reasonable to insist that they have to be.Cam Rea's God is an Anarchist is an attempt to explore the anti-authoritarian side of Christianity. It is structured primarily as a reading of the Bible, with a focus on biblical passages that might be thought to lend support to the state's putative legitimacy, as well as on those that can be seen as counting against it.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacque Ellul blends politics, theology, history, and exposition in this analysis of the relationship between political anarchy and biblical faith. While he clarifies the views of each and how they can be related, his aim is not to proselytize either anarchists into Christianity or Christians into anarchy. On the one hand, suggests Ellul, anarchists need to understand that much of their criticism of Christianity applies only to the form of religion that developed, not to biblical faith. Christians, on the other hand, need to look at the biblical texts and not reject anarchy as a political option, for it seems closest to biblical thinking. After charting the background of his own interest in the subject, Ellul defines what he means by anarchy: the nonviolent repudiation of authority. He goes on to look at the Bible as the source of anarchy (in the sense of nondomination, not disorder), working through Old Testament history, Jesus' ministry, and finally the early church's view of power as reflected in the New Testament writings.
