All second grade students at a suburban elementary school in the upper Midwest were benchmark assessed to evaluate their reading fluency ability. Based on the benchmark assessments, five students were selected to receive reading intervention using the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention System. The study focused on the correlated daily book reads and poetry books and the effect they have on student fluency. Reading fluency data was collected on a weekly basis and comparisons from students' baseline scores was made to determine if fluency growth was occurring. The data was triangulated and compared to determine the growth students made. The research suggested that poetry reading daily did help students achieve greater gains in their reading fluency.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using repeated reading of poetry as a strategy to increase third graders' reading fluency scores. This study utilized a quasi-experimental one group pretest/post test design. The researcher implemented one poem per week, for a nine-week period, with a group of six third grade students. The study was conducted during the fall trimester of the 2009-2010 school year. The Basic Reading Inventory (BRI) was given as a pretest to establish baseline scores, as well as a post test for an indicator of progress. An anecdotal journal was used to document observations about student progress during the study. Six selected students received daily instruction on one poem per week. After being introduced to each poem. students were asked to practice reading the poem independently, with a partner and in a small group. On the last day of each week the researcher collected fluency data by timing and listening to each student. A comparison group of six different students with similar reading abilities were given the BRI pre/posttst. In comparing the performance data of the two groups, the treatment group showed a significant growth. The results may be due to the inclusion of repeated reading of simple poems as a strategy to increase fluency.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether implementing 15 minutes of daily, direct fluency instruction using poetry to model phrasing, rate and expression, with opportunities that allowed students practice for rereading would result in increased reading fluency rate. This research was conducted with twenty-three second-grade students during the first ten weeks of the school year. For this study, the researcher used a quantitative, preexperimental design. This method is known as a one-group pretest/posttest design. Results were measured using the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills Nonsense Word test. the DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency probes and the Language Arts Primary Observation, and assessment used by the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Each fluency lesson was organized into four components: a focus on meaning, modeling, guided practice and in dependen practice. A variety of echo and choral reading activities helped students attain fluency with the passage alongside a fluent reader, which in this case was the researcher. The assisted reading activities took place multiple times throughout the week for reinforcement and practice. The data indicated an overall increase in reading fluency rate for the students involved n the study.

In the United States, many students who struggle with reading comprehension are not receiving high-quality instruction that ensures comprehension of text. Elementary teachers are faced with the challenge of how to structure and organize literacy instruction that ensures growth in reading comprehension for struggling students. The purpose of this case study is to explore the impact of a reading framework on fourth grade struggling students' reading comprehension, attitudes and engagement. This case study looks specifically at the impact of the Daily 5 and CAFÉ literacy framework that seems to respond to the needs of struggling students and includes Oregon state standards in literacy. The fundamental research questions that guided this study are: (a) How do struggling students perceive their experience in Daily 5 and CAFE reading framework, (b) How do struggling students respond to the comprehension strategies taught in the Daily 5 and CAFÉ reading framework, (c) What are struggling students' attitudes toward reading, and (d) What kind of growth in reading comprehension did the struggling students have over one year? This case study used a constructivist and transactional theoretical lens. Data collected include: interviews, surveys, questionnaires, Draw-a-Reader, journals, and achievement tests. The main finding indicates that fourth grade struggling students made progress in reading comprehension when they engaged in Daily 5 and CAFÉ framework. In addition, findings indicate that their progress was facilitated by certain conditions: (a) letting students choose their reading and writing materials, (b) helping student select explicit reading goals, (c) setting up a positive and supportive classroom environment, and (d) offering opportunities for students to collaborate with each other while reading. The results of this study suggest that the Daily 5 and CAFÉ combined literacy framework benefits struggling readers by producing positive results in reading comprehension as well as contributing to better student attitudes and increased student engagement. With the ever-increasing importance placed on United States National Common Core Standards and Smarter Balanced Assessments as well as the need to address the reading challenges for struggling readers, the Daily 5 and CAFÉ combined literacy framework offers hope for students and teachers alike.

Students today demonstrate a lack of knowledge in the genre poetry. In spite of this, poetry is an important Common Core English Language Arts standard which asks K-12 students to be fluent in and identify parts of stories, dramas, and poems when writing or speaking about a text, using terms such as chapter, scene, and stanza. This qualitative study aims to identify ways to implement poetry in the classroom on a consistent basis to promote student confidence, reading fluency, word recognition, engagement, connection, and comprehension. Third grade students were pre assessed and post assessed using reading attitude surveys, 3rd grade Dolch sight words, and DRA2 reading assessments to measure fluency and accuracy. My prediction for the study was students' reading confidence would increase allowing for growth in reading attitudes and reading fluency and accuracy.

This research was conducted in a First Grade classroom with ten subjects. The treatment lasted for nine weeks with pretests and posttests administered the first and last weeks of the study. Data taken included nonsense word recognition, words per minute read, and anecdotal journals. At the beginning of each week, the five subjects in the treatment group conferenced with the teacher about a new poem. The subjects took home the poem and practiced it with an adult for four days. Subjects (or their guardians) documented the number of minutes read each night on verification sheets. Data were compiled, triangulated and analyzed to form conclusions. Results from this study showed an increase in reading fluency of both the treatment and comparison subjects during the nine week treatment period. Further research is needed to determine if the conclusions of this study would be applicable to a generalized population.

Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

The surveys were then analyzed and the data used to compile a short list that teachers can use to help them choose poetry, based on student's preferences.

Book excerpt: ASTRACT: This qualitative study documented fifth grade students exploring reading fluency through repeated reading of songs and poems during a twelve-week period. The teacher modeled appropriate reading rate, accuracy, and prosody. The students then used the same 2-3 poems or songs for the week and practiced repeated reading in a variety of ways, including choral reading, partner reading, and silent reading. As the students continued to reread the text, they were asked to work in partners and analyze the text. The teacher used direct instruction and repeated reading to support teaching comprehension. At the end of the week, the students performed their poems and songs for an audience and the students then voted on and discussed which readings were most enjoyable to listen to and were most fluently read. Throughout the study the teacher collected data through nonparticipant observation, participant observation, surveys, student work, and diagnostic reading assessments. The data collected from this study suggests that students that are given a purpose for rereading and are given engaging, short, and age appropriate texts are able to make gains in their fluency and comprehension skills.

These data tools were all used to measure the effect repeated readings.and performance of poetry had on student fluency. All students involved in the study were fluent at grade level, or on track to be fluent at grade level, by the conclusion of the school year. Therefore, data support the use of repeated readings of poetry to increase student fluency on grade level text.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This qualitative research study documents the observed behaviors and reported experiences of fourth grade struggling reading students and their teacher when developing metacognition to bridge phonics and comprehension while increasing their motivation to read. Twenty-three fourth grade students participated in the study in a rural intermediate school containing approximately 1,200 students in the Northeastern United States. In this study, the teacher examined the process of employing metacognitive phonetic and comprehension strategies within authentic literature by meeting students at their independent reading level, providing book choice, using multisensory activities, modeling think alouds, and providing opportunities for self-reflection. During the study, the teacher took anecdotal notes, adjusting and applying reading strategies as needed by the students. The students wrote weekly in a reflective journal about their experiences. Methods of gathering data included teacher observation, artifacts, surveys, informal interviews, and student reflective journals. Methods of analysis included field log analysis, student interview analysis, reading attitude survey analysis, running record analysis, CORE Phonics Survey analysis, Reading Inventory Analysis, and codes and bins analysis. Students were taught specific strategies for monitoring their reading at a deeper level including: decoding, fluency, and comprehension. Students practiced decoding and analyzing words within authentic literature when their meaning broke down. The teacher discovered that by meeting students where they are on the reading continuum, providing students with book choices, and guiding students to discover their own inner voice when they are reading positively influenced their reading experience. Findings suggest teachers must allow time for students to practice reading skills on their independent reading level with their book of choice. Independent practice builds background knowledge, strengthens reading skills, builds interest and confidence, motivates and increases stamina in reading. The creation of a personalized tool box of "fix-it" strategies allows students to reflect upon what to do when meaning breaks down in the future.
