Book excerpt: The Analysis of Mind By Bertrand Russell "By the co-operation of different writers in carrying out this plan it was hoped that a thoroughness and completeness of treatment, otherwise unattainable, might be secured. It was believed also that from writers mainly British and American fuller consideration of English Philosophy than it had hitherto received might be looked for. In the earlier series of books containing, among others, Bosanquet's "History of Aesthetic," Pfleiderer's "Rational Theology since Kant," Albee's "History of English Utilitarianism," Bonar's "Philosophy and Political Economy," Brett's "History of Psychology," Ritchie's "Natural Rights," these objects were to a large extent effected. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. Book excerpt: The Analysis of Mind: large print by Bertrand Russell This book has grown out of an attempt to harmonize two different tendencies, one in psychology, the other in physics, with both of which I find myself in sympathy, although at first sight they might seem inconsistent. On the one hand, many psychologists, especially those of the behaviourist school, tend to adopt what is essentially a materialistic position, as a matter of method if not of metaphysics. They make psychology increasingly dependent on physiology and external observation, and tend to think of matter as something much more solid and indubitable than mind. Meanwhile the physicists, especially Einstein and other exponents of the theory of relativity, have been making "matter" less and less material. Their world consists of "events," from which "matter" is derived by a logical construction. Whoever reads, for example, Professor Eddington's "Space, Time and Gravitation" (Cambridge University Press, 1920), will see that an old-fashioned materialism can receive no support from modern physics. I think that what has permanent value in the outlook of the behaviourists is the feeling that physics is the most fundamental science at present in existence. But this position cannot be called materialistic, if, as seems to be the case, physics does not assume the existence of matter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind, Vol. 1 of 2 IN the study of Nature, either mental or physical, the aim of the scientific enquirer is to diminish as much as possible the catalogue of ultimate truths. When, Without doing violence to facts, he is able'to bring one phenomenon within the laws of another; when he can shew that a fact or agency, which seemed to be original and distinct, could have been produced by other'known facts and agencies, acting according to their own laws the enquirer who has arrived at this result, considers himself to have made an important advance in the knowledge Of nature, and to have brought science, in that department, a step nearer to perfection. Other accessions to science, however important practically, are, in a scientificpoint of view, mere additions to the materials this is something done towards perfectn the structure itself. Others before him had Of course recognised the fact that social conditions greatly influenced mental evolution; the fact was transparent, but no one had seized its full significance. Nor do I think that even Comte saw more than its general range. His abstention from analysis and detailed investiga tion kept him from specifying the mode of operation of the social factor; and his cerebral theory, so unsatisfactory in its method, and so fantastic in its anatomy, could not supply what he left unspecified. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mind The study of mind was advanced as remarkably during the nineteenth century as any of its sister sciences. Here, as elsewhere, observation grew keener, new instrumental tests were adopted, and interpretation became more sagacious. A fact as commonplace as the length of human babyhood, when it came under the eye of John Fiske, went far to explain the foundations of the family, and how it came about that primitive man, to whom much was given, so added to his gifts that at last the gulf betwixt him and his next of kin became all but infinite. Of the new study of children, which owes a weighty debt to Darwin and Preyer, Professor Sully is a worthy exponent. In this volume he has something to say of the deepest interest to parents, to all students of the early unfolding of human faculty. In the inquiry of Mr. Galton regarding Twins we have a sterling example of the statistical method. Who shall call that method dry and unfruitful after he reads what it brought to this patient and discerning investigator? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of the Phenomena of the Human Mind, Vol. 2 of 2 As we have occasion to speak of things; animals, vegetables, minerals so we have occasion to speak of the marks, which we are under the necessity of using, in order to record or to communicate our thoughts respecting them. We cannot record or communicate our thoughts respecting names, as man, tree, horse, to walk, to fly, to eat, to converse, without marks for them. We proceed in the case of names, as we do in other cases. We form them into classes, some more, some less, comprehensive, and give a name to each. We have one name, so general as to include the all; Word. That is not a name of any thing. It i a name of the marks which we employ for discourse and a name of them all. John is a word, mountain is a word, to run is a word, above is a word, and so on. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This means that whenever the mind acts it is always the whole mindthat acts and never a mere part of it. Thus when I see a tree, my whole mind is centered upon the tree and I am not seeing the tree with only a part Of my mind. When I think Of an Object, that Object is the point around which my mind as a whole is organized. The'n mind can be defined as the active unity which manifests itself in and comprehends the organization of objects in our world. And by Objects we mean primarily those things which we touch and handle and eat and sell in our cultural and practical relations, and not Objects which are supposed by some mystery to be only in or out of the mind and therefore unreal. The proper study indeed the inevitable study - of mankind is man. Yet for the most part we commonly assume that human nature is a thing about which any reasonable person can safely generalize and reach a satisfactory View. To manufacture or repair a lifeless machine - a motor-car, a microphone, a submarine - expert knowledge is essential. But to follow the workings of the growing mind, to guide its development and correct its faults, for that, we imagine, nothing but common sense is needed. No view could be more mistaken. Common sense alone will no more enable us to fathom the mysteries of the human conscious ness than it has helped us to solve the problems of the atom or the star.
