Book excerpt: The Tugaloo terrane in the eastern Blue Ridge, located in the high-grade southern Appalachian crystalline core, contains small internal basement massifs, the Neoproterozoic Tallulah Falls Formation, and Paleozoic granitoid plutons. Detailed geologic mapping in the Lake Toxaway and eastern Big Ridge quadrangles was done to better understand the regional tectonic history. Whole-rock geochemistry was used to determine similarities between the augen phase of the 1.15 Ga Toxaway Gneiss and the 1.15 Ga Wiley Gneiss of northeastern Georgia. The study found that all eastern Blue Ridge orthogneisses are similar and probably share a source. The previously identified Whiteside, Looking Glass, and Pink Beds plutons, and the newly identified Horseshoe Rock and Round Mountain plutons were also characterized. All plutons are low-K, catazonal granodiorites and trondhjemites that plot as volcanic arc or syn-collisional granites on tectonic discrimination diagrams. The Looking Glass, Pink Beds, and Round Mountain plutons were dated using U-Pb SHRIMP zircon geochronology, and their ages are 333 " 16 Ma, 371.3 " 4.2 Ma, and 342.5 " 2.4 Ma, respectively. Zircon saturation temperature estimates for these plutons, and a Whitney and Stormer two-feldspar estimate for the Round Mountain pluton, indicate that they intruded at 700-800° C. Whole-rock geochemistry was used to constrain the origin of amphibolites and hornblende gneisses around the Toxaway dome. One sample was a metabasalt with MORB composition, like other eastern Blue Ridge samples. Two other samples have a metasedimentary protolith. Migmatitic aureoles found in the amphibolite facies rocks around the Whiteside, Looking Glass, and Horseshoe Rock plutons are syn-intrusional and represent a zone of contact metasomatism. The new pluton ages constrain the regional deformation history. At least 6 deformations are recognized in the eastern Blue Ridge. Dominant regional foliation is traditionally attributed to the second event (~466 Ma). However, foliations measured within all plutons are identical to foliations measured in the surrounding rock, indicating that foliations had to form after the youngest pluton intruded (~333 Ma), and that Alleghanian deformation was dominant in this region. These observations do not explain cross-cutting relationships observed around older plutons and raise new questions about southern Appalachian tectonics.

Book excerpt: In the southwestern Cartoogechaye terrane, the Carroll Knob mafic complex preserves chemical signatures suggestive of ocean crustal origins, similar to the Buck Creek mafic-ultramafic suite (Berger et al. 2001, Peterson et al., 2009). However, the amphibolites in the Carroll Knob complex indicate pyroxene-rich cumulate and gabbroic protoliths consistent with an active oceanic magma system undergoing continuous magmatic replenishment and crystallization. West of the Carroll Knob complex, the Kimsey Bald mafic body includes amphibolites with protoliths comparable to the MORB-like, high-Ti amphibolites of the Buck Creek suite. The few amphibolite samples from the Lake Chatuge complex examined in this study also shows ocean crustal affinities, similar to those in the Buck Creek, Kimsey Bald, and Carroll Knob complexes. The chemical distinctions among these amphibolite suites, and the differences in the inferred crustal ages among their enclosing crustal units point to a possible boundary between the northern and southern regions of the Cartoogechaye terrane, one related either to likely crustal protoliths, or to a change in tectonic environment. The varied types of blocks comprising the Tathams Creek and associated Cartoogechaye units may indicate a transitional zone between the upper plate-derived accretionary sequences observed to the northeast and dominantly lower oceanic plate lithologies exposed in the southwestern extent of the terrane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed geologic mapping, SHRIMP U-Pb zircon geochronology, geochemistry, petrology, and structural and kinematic analyses were applied to decipher the structure, tectonic heredity, and Paleozoic accretionary history of suspect terranes of the southern Appalachian Blue Ridge (BR) and Inner Piedmont (IP). Detailed geologic mapping in the Waynesville and Sam Knob 7.5-minute quadrangles recognized the Great Balsam Mountains window cored by sillimanite I and II zone Dahlonega gold belt rocks, overthrust by migmatitic biotite gneiss of the Cartoogechaye terrane to the northwest, and migmatitic Tallulah Falls Formation of the Tugaloo terrane to the southeast. Suspect terranes of the BR and IP consist of peri-Laurentian and mixed Laurentian and peri-Gondwanan heredities and were accreted to the Laurentian margin during the Taconian, 465--450 Ma, and Neoacadian, 365--340 Ma, orogenies. Detrital zircon populations of 1.3--0.9 Ga, 1.5--1.3 Ga, and 750--700 Ma from the Cartoogechaye, Cowrock, Dahlonega gold belt, and Tugaloo terranes indicate a dominantly Laurentian provenance. Minor Paleoproterozoic populations in these terranes suggest input from distal terranes of the Laurentian mid-continent or the Amazonian craton. Detrital Paleozoic zircons, 460--430 Ma, occur only in samples from the Cat Square terrane and Smith River allochthon. Ordovician and 600--500 Ma detrital zircons from the Cat Square terrane document the first occurrence of peri-Gondwanan material deposited in a convergent setting between Laurentia and the approaching Carolina superterrane during the Late Silurian to Early Devonian. Palinspastic reconstruction of the Cat Square basin suggests a paleogeographic location in the Pennsylvania embayment and links deformation in the crystalline core with progradation of the Devonian clastic wedge. Metamorphic zircons from central BR terranes yield U-Pb ages of 465--450 Ma, and delimit accretion to the Laurentian margin and metamorphism to amphibolite and granulite facies during the Taconian orogeny. U-Pb ages of metamorphic zircons from the IP yield ages of 392--344 Ma corresponding to upper amphibolite facies metamorphism associated with the Devonian--Mississippian collision of the Carolina superterrane during the Neoacadian orogeny. The IP and parts of the eastern BR flowed west and southwest out from beneath the overthrust Carolina superterrane as an orogenic channel.
